Today at school, we were jogging from the school to the playing fields (about 500m away)
in our sports gear. Me and another of my mates were jogging together, and as we went
round a corner on the pavement, we saw a gang of other kids in my year, laughing and
generally messing about.

Suddenly, a kid decided to jump out out into the road to show, whilst looking at his mates.
I wasn't aware he had actually ran into the road, but I heard a crash like a box of wine
bottles being thrown at a wall crossed with a crunch of metal of someone. Me and my
mate were behind a parked car when it happened, so all we saw was the kids head fall
rapidly downwards towards the road.

The gang ahead of us were standing, frozen in shock, as they had witnessed everything.

i went round the car, and noticed that the car was actually a learner. the instructor had
been quick to react, and had go out of the car to deal with the kid. the driver himself
just sat at the wheel shaking with shock.

The kid sat up, and the instructor immediately told him to lay down. she was angry.

The kid whimpered "I'm so sorry, I'm such a wanker!"

The kid knew it was all his own fault.

It was at about this point i jogged on to the playing fields, to catch up with my friends
to tell them about it.

The kid was apparently taken by ambulance to the hospital. He was extremely lucky,
as the driver had been going fairly slowly. He had not broken anything, just badly
grazed his elbow, coupled with a few bruises. The car had actually been worse off.
The windscreen had cracked, and there was a dent in the bumper and bonnet.

Have you ever been hit by a car, as a pedestrian or cyclist? have you witnessed someone being hit by a car?

Wait, so your friend ran on the road and the driver knew it was THEIR fault.

**** that shit, yo. Especially with learning drivers around. It was clearly the kids fault.

no the kid knew it was his fault. the kid was the one swearing.

The title says it was your mate, but you refer to him in the text as an unknown kid.

People who **** around in traffic like that deserve a bit of a shake up like that. It's not fair to fool around in traffic, if you want to throw away your life thats fine, but it often ruins the drivers life.

My mate was hit by a car a few years ago and killed. He ran out between two cars and looked the wrong way. Was really sad; I've always been very careful after that.

Wow, sounds pretty traumatic. Allow me to ask...why did he run out into the road in the first place?

I saw my neighbours dog get creamed by a car at high speed ...to say it flew through the air is an understatement ...there wasnt all that much left of it's head and I learned what the inside of a dog looks like

also he was this kind of dog:

Weimaraner.jpg

the neighbour was a hunter and all around jerk, he wasnt upset by the death; more like angry he needed to get another hunting dog ..years later in an unrelated incident I shoved dog shit in the tailpipe of his pick up truck

well, i know him but he's not one of my my hang-out-with friends.

Shit. My old teacher had a similar experience with a French exchange student. She was used to traffic coming from the other direction, so she looked the wrong way and bang. dead.

So if a deer runs in front of you on a pitch black highway at 3am, and if you swear and curse, it'll be your fault? He IS a new driver, he probably didn't know any better because he thinks because he's driving it's automatically his fault.

I got hit by a car...

...in GTA.

I got hit by a car on my bike, i rolled up on the windshield and my bike got tossed about 10ft.

I was fine, barely a scratch, and my bike was fine too, although it was scratched. It wasn't a big deal though because I do a lot of mtn biking so heaven forbid my bike gets dirty or scratched.

They were going maybe 20mph and I'm lucky it was a buick and not an f250 or something where I couldn't have rolled up on the hood. In retrospect maybe I should have done the American thing and sued them for billions.

wasn't really all that traumatic. He was just showing off in front of his friends. god knows why he had to do that in the middle of a road.

no, and this has nothing to do with what i've said. i've never said it was the driver's fault. just to make it clear, the driver DID NOT SWEAR. he just froze in shock. i didn't see the driver until he got out of the car just before i left. he didn't say anything.

He IS a new driver, he probably didn't know any better because he thinks because he's driving it's automatically his fault.

he probably did. and i reckon when they both got back into the car the instructor said to him it was not his fault. it was the kids stupid fault for running into the road.

also, @stern. that sounds pretty traumatic. my mother hit a dog at speed, she got out of the car and heard it making a wheezy-whiney noise, before it died a couple of minutes later. she didn't even look at the dog, she just ran to the owner house. this was well before i was born, though

I walked into the side of a moving car once. I was messing around with my MP3 player and didn't realise i was walking across a road and walked straight into the side of a moving car. The car sent me spinning and i felt like a complete prat. The driver was nice about it, seeing as it was my fault and he bandaged up my leg for me.

a 24 year old woman was killed by a bus last week doing the exact same thing. she absentmindedly walked right in front of a moving bus. it must have been bad because there was trauma unit caring for the witnesses

My brother saved a lady from walking in front of a bus. She was blindly walking into the street and he grabbed her and pulled her away.

I'm like shifty eyes when I cross the street. Almost as bad as like OCD, looking back and forth.

I always think I'm going to get hit by a car, and that's why I never do.

He never once referred to the driver as 'kid', only the guy who got knocked over. Way to be dense.

Well if he's learning I doubt he's 40.

A bunch of kids round here though it'd be funny to run out in front of cars on my (generally quiet and low-speed) street. When the car stopped, the other kids all ran and slid across the bonnet of the car (hood for you American types) before all running off into the adjacent woods. Prime Darwin Award candidates, although sadly none of them got physically injured.

They don't do it any more, though :)

But throughout the entire story he referred to the one who got hit as "kid" and never referred to the driver as that. Your reading comprehension failed, bra.

ok, whatever.. I fail to see how it's really relevant to the story, my point was that it's not the drivers fault.

Also I should note I never once referred the driver to be a kid either... I actually thought I did, but looking back on my posts I didn't say the driver was the kid once. Way to be dense. Looks like your reading comprehension failed... Bra.

I see loads of people in instructor's cars learning to drive in their 30's and 40's. Could be my living in Bath gives me a different set of demographics to observe, though

yeah but you implied that you thought the driver was kid, and that is what we inferred

to be fair, i guess he was about 17. but still you wouldn't have known that. dense

I almost got hit by a couple of months ago. The stop lights were red both ways and the walk sign had already come on (around campus they let people cross the street for ~25 seconds without any traffic) but this SUV went through the intersection really fast, definitely after their light was already red for a few seconds. If I had kept walking they would've hit me and it would've been their fault.

You missed out on big money. Also, maybe paraplegia. But also BIG MONEY.

From the house in Scotland there's a road which from climbs up over the hills and fields of the headland then winds down through the leafy hillside towards the beach and on into the village. I was jogging down that section of it, towards the beach. Probably I shouldn't have been going so fast down such a steep road and a sharp curve but neither should the red hatchback that came charging up it. I jumped to the side like I was Max Payne and as he braked I sort of bounced off the bonnet, crashing into the fence (if the fence hadn't been there I guess I would have rolled down the steep hillside, heh). The driver just rolled down his window, leaned out, looked at me with disdain, and said "Watch where you're going". Then he drove off. Well, that was me told. I came out of it just with a bruised hip, where I'd struck the car.

Not so for a distant friend of mine, after I moved away from the island. When tourists come over there from the mainland they look at the vast rolling hills and the light and space and think "hey, awesome, here's a place where we can drive really fast". That's fine until you get to villages where the speed limit drops to 30 or 20. Well, they just keep on going at 50 or 60, apparently unaware that people live here. One of those cars came round a corner and hit my friend as he was crossing the road after school. He died later of some kind of internal haemorrhage.

How many manually broken limbs before they got the point and stopped?

Sulkdodds, that sucks. I'm glad you weren't killed.

There is a long twisty road leading up a mountain where a relative of mine lives, and at first I liked speeding up the mountain. I don't really do that any more, but I especially won't after reading your story.

One of my friends and I were running around our school campus on the route we always take. To get to the start though, you have to cross the main drive of the school, which can be quite congested with buses and cars leaving after the day ends. While we were waiting for a long line of buses to pass, my friend must have gotten impatient because he rushed out as soon as the last bus had passed without looking to see if anything else was coming. That's why he didn't see the car. He was extremly lucky though, since the speed limit on the drive is 25 mph and he ran into the side of it, just in front of the mirror. The mirror decked him in the ribs and spun him around, breaking off in the process. He stumbled a little bit, but didn't fall completely down. Just stood there looking dazed for a while. The driver of the car never even stopped to see if he was okay, but actually sped up so as to get away faster!

I just read back on that, and it's really long-winded, so here is the short version: My friend got hit by a car. He was fine.

I'm a bit retarded so I look both ways even on one-way streets.
Seems to work well.

I actually drove round the village and back through their target area at speed. When I reached where they were, I stopped abruptly, jumped out of the car and loudly called them a "bunch of stupid c**ts." They ran off and didn't return.

Important lesson - violence doesn't solve everything. Sometimes loud abuse works just as well.

They just migrated. You didn't teach them the lesson they deserved. You just deflected them on a different course!

Yeah ive been totally smashed up by a car not good at all!!!

well all started when i was biking home from work, just going at normal speed untill i decided that i wanna get past these next set of lights before it changes, so i speed up and of to my right is a jeep turning right and i was going straight the lights turn yellow and i was already threw them when it changed, so then i hear this car come speeding to its left oppsite me going 40 or 50km straight into me, knocks me off my bike about 20m up the road, bike gets totalled and im airbourne for about 10secs until i hit the ground with my shoulder and head lucky i was wearing a helmet, but still i was in a coma for 2 and half days, woke up asking do i have to got to school lol but i was f***ked broken shoulder, arm, collerbone, ribs, wrist, hip.

Pics of the bike. Right away.

You get all sorts of idiot pedestrians in London. They just walk into the road without looking and assume their cloak of invincibility will protect them. And dart between lanes of stationary cars, ignoring the bikes that will be travelling between them. Muppets.

Some time ago I was riding to work, on Victoria Street (where Victoria station is), only doing about 25mph in the inside lane. Then without any warning whatsoever this woman just runs off the pavement in front of me, I had a fraction of a second to brake but hit her with the front of the bike. The momentum of her running must have cushioned the blow as she just bounced off, spun round, said "sorry!" and then moronically ran across the other lanes of traffic too! Darwin must have had his way by now.

Here, you sometimes get people walking along the national speed limit A road between my village and the city. The traffic will be doing anything between 40 and 100mph, and there are lots of blind bends. Yet people walk along the side of the road. It's quite unnerving. Once I overtook a van at night and then notice there's a guy standing in the middle of the other side of the road in dark clothes, leisurely makes his way to the verge as I approach him at 80-odd mph.

I know it's the countryside, but rural A-roads are not for pedestrians!
