my mod idea, Xen wars someone interesed?

I hav a ide to a mod that In My Opinion is cool

i am thinking about a stragyc mod a la warcraft stile, but will not be nothing whit warcraft and not the same gamestyle

my idea is make a real time strategy mod based in the Xen world
the first name I hav think is Xen Wars cuz the mod will be about wars betwen the Xen creatures
for example the Xenians vs RaceX vs antlions and maybe more customs races
and the story will not be nothing whit Half-life
if there is a mod like this please tellme

but the problem is that I dont know a heck about moding
so any help is good

also that I live in venezuela(southamerica) so if someone of another country want be part of the team the only way to comunicat will be for msn messenger or something like that

also I dont if make this mod will be ilegal cuz will be using content of Valve and this mod will be voilating theyr copyrights

the true I want to make this mod and I wish had a team to make it

I would suggest that you use an existing RTS engine for an RTS mod. It will make things a lot easier on you. You might try the C&C generals, or WarCraft3 engine.

Not necessarily..

You could have a top down game, side scroller game, etc.

cuz whit the coding stuff is posible progam something diferent to the original right?

I am making experiments in the warcraft3 editor
but I dont get good results

also hav worldcraft but I sont hav any fugking idea how to use it
were I can find tutorials? in spanish better

This isn't Spanish, but here you go.
 
Making an RTS in Source would should allow you to fine-tune your maps a Hell of a lot more... lots of coding, though. :p

Who knows, it could actually end up being less work than heavily modifying an existing RTS being that they only really provide limited map editors, whereas you get pretty much everything with Half-Life 2 (SDK and a world editor that allows you to use your own models/texture with ease).

No, you can use the source engine for any type of game. It's just that Source was built for making FPS games, so the functionality that it already has is best suited to making FPS games. Where an engine like the WarCraftIII engine or C&C generals engine has pretty much all of the functions needed to make an RTS game.

Source is probably more flexible than any RTS engine (from a modder's point of view), but you'll have to do a lot more coding to add some things that are already present in RTS engines. Like drag box selection for selecting many units at the same time. You'd also have to write your own formation algorithms if you wanted your units to maintain a formation. You might also have to code new AI for gaurding a unit, or defending an area. You'll also have to make your own user interface from scratch, since the Half-Life user interface will not work for an RTS game.

You can make an RTS using Source. It will just take longer than if you used an engine designed for RTS games. If you want features in your mod that you don't think you can do with an existing RTS engine, then it may be worth the extra time to adapt the Source engine.

As long as you use the Source engine I can't see that happening to you. As long as you make this mod on Valve-owned software, they would have little to no grounds on which to sue you. :)
 
RTS are much harder to make, if this is your first mod, I wouldent recomend to start with an RTS.

You could always make a RTS FPS.
One person is voted or accepts the role of commander (great clan game btw). Each side has a "Base Building". The rest of your team will be in FPS mode, however, they will get typical RTS commands and waypoints and objectives from the commander. They will need to, other than kill the enemy, lay the foundations for building structers (cause no one wants to be the peasant while playing a FPS) as well as capture resource points. These resource points will be some of the most important areas in the game. This is because, the more resources your commander has: the more vechiles, weapons, Upgrades and Life points(something that determines how fast you respawn and where) your team has. Soon you will be pushing back the enemy from resource point to resource point, until its a fight to the death inside the enemies "Command Base"- finally killing the comander in his uplink thermanal thing. You can also then add the ellement of "ability stealing" (like ctf) where through out the map, there are DNA/Mech Devices that you will need to collect. Once installed inside your "Command Base" your team gets certain Advantages - however, these advantages can be stolen(like CTF) from an enemy(or stolen from yourself) and added to your own base, giving you supreme advantages. Different races are a good idea, but on the whole there should not be too much difference between Races, rather the differences would come from how they use DNA/Mech Abilities and the vechiles they have.

you say you will comander others players and that players that are the units will be in FPS
but that idea sounds similiar to a multiplayer mode of unreal tournament 2004
but I like the idea

the races I hav planned are the basics of halflife
the Xenians(vortigaunts, alien grunts,controllers) Race X(pitdroone,stroopers,voltigores)and the antlions(maybe whit creatures designed by miself for example one whit range atack)
my idea principal was a basic RTS but your idea is betters especilay to multiplayer game

Yes, this idea is very simular to Natural Selection as well as Unreal. I first thought of it while playing Unreal and wanted to see it as an Unreal Mod, but Source would be alot of fun(and Xen would be great). <RJMC> I have a few more idea that I will post here soon unless you wish otherwise. At the moment I am pulled to real world activities that aparently need my comitment (I have discovered a few mistakes in my own idea, so we'll need to think things out)
 
OK so we are in the RTS and the Xen world Mode. *thinking*
The problem with a FPS RTS is that you will not ever really have enough FPS's to fill the megalomaniac heart of a true RTS. Especially when you get into the Antlions, where you will need hordes of them to make an effective attack. So there for, RJMC, I propose that you have the FPS's as Commanders of squads. Yes I know that the main guy in the base is a commander, but now lets call him “The General” as things have moved on. Back to the Commanders: The Commanders = the FPS. The General = The RTS.
So you will still create units as such, and these will respond as they normally would in a RTS game, how ever, when like this, they would make porely dis coordinated attacks. When they are headed by a Commander (which one point of the game would be to always have them do so) they will all act under the will and the vision of that commander, whom himself is in a like vehicle. This commander is obviously under the direction of the General, working together to secure key points on the map. The General would also be able to take control of any unit in the game – controlling it by remote.
Remember that the Xen boarder world was just a staging area in the dimensional shifts. The Half Life 2 plot will reveal more, but lets assume that there is the possibility for countless alien worlds to enter Xen and/or dimensional gates/worlds. This means that you cold have a lot of fun in designing races and units. However, for simplicity sake, I would advise to the 3 Races that you have. In the end it will all come down to game play, and especially how the vehicles respond. There should be the two elements to the game, vehicle-outside battles and death match-inside battles. The outside Battles will have a lot to do with the RTS Generals and how good they are – while the final inside base battles will be a combernation of the death match skills of the Commanders working together as well as of the ability advantages and upgrades that the General has been working towards through out the game.
At the most, I would have it so that only three sides could join a single map. This is mainly to keep up ping and to have enough FPS to go around. But as technology betters its self, who can tell ... :) ? 8 Generals all a different race each with 8-16 FPS Commanders at their disposal as well as the in game units.
I'll think more on this ... Tell me if there is any way I can help RJCM. Perhaps some idea we could throw around or are having problems with. What would you call it?
 
your idea of comanders is also good
for example for the antlion race the comander unit can be the antlion guard and for the xenians the comander unit can be the controller
about the vehicles..well we know this races dont hav a good tecnology so I yhink that maybe the vehicles can be creatures that can be rided
for example I hav a idea to the controller, in HL1 the vortigaunts hav collar that keep them slaved, soo maybe the xenian controller can hav the abillitie to put collar in wildlife creatures and control them, and the very big creatures can be used has vehicles
something I want in the game if that every possition(since the leader comander that control all, until a cimple a primary combat unit) will hav advantages,for example the leader comander how can see the map in a RTS style can see enemie's and warning to the units, but just if the enmye's are in a explorated zone

also I am thinking to add creatures that valve has make HL1,but in the final version dont was included

<RJMC> Your Idea is great and I for one would love to see it work and play it. But you need a team of people - lots of them from what I can see. I can only really help with ideas, as I'm no good at the rest of mod making. I've tried. and lets just say - my skills lay else where. Keep the idea going around and I'm sure you will find ppl who are interested. PM me and I'll always be willing to come up with ideas.
 
well I will try to do my best to make this mod
I will post this in the help wanted and ofered forums

but the true I prefer enjoy this free time, maybe I will do the mod later maybe after the HL2 release
