Heya guys. I got some issues that idk how to figure out because I'm a noob computer setup guy. Here's my problems :

1. My comp isn't recognizing my dvd rom drive, which is supposed to be my primary drive.

2. Every time I start a game, my monitor goes into sleep mode, or resets or something. I have an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 128mb, and a SAMSUNG SyncMaster 955 Flat CRT.

3. I'm for some reason signed up with MSN!!! I'm supposed to just have Internet Explorer! However, idk how to revert to IE.

Thanks a ton to anyone who can help me! I'm new to this computer setup thing.

1) do you have multiple drives? cd/dvd drives? hard drives?
if so have you changed the "jumper" settings? on the backs of the drives :)

if they are both trying to use master setting or slave... one of them wont work...

2) check that your card is well in place... and that the monitor is plugged in well (i know it seems silly but sometimes happens) try loading in safe mode and trying and older or more recent set of drivers...

it could also be not enough power? (maybe)

3) if its windows 98 delete the MSN icon off your desktop... it should be fine... choose not to use MSN... yuo can do it!!

Therook

Thanks, but I don't have any jumpers. :(

First of all i think he says DVD-rom, secondly, Are you sure you dont have any jumpers? Do you know what jumpers are? If neither one (im assuming you have 2 drives) have jumpers in it(varies from brand to brand) there both on Slave, which wont work, your DVD rom needs a jumper.

Sorry I checked again. Got the jumpers in both drives, now they're both up and running! Thanks guys. Those damn jumpers are impossible to see!

My only problem now - I have win xp, 9800 pro 128 mb, every time i try to play a game, just when its about to start, my whole comp freezes. Any suggestions? My mobo can handle 8xagp.

Theres a conflict somewhere.

couldnt be overheating becuase games wont even start and get the card warmed up.

my suggestion.(it worked for me but i could be wrong)

take everything that isnt vital out of your computer....extra drives...sound card ....network card..ect

see if it still doesnt work

if it does then you will figure out where the problem is through trial and error.

if it still doesnt work .... go through your bios and make sure everything is set correctly.

When going through BIOS, what am I looking for to make sure everythings ok?

my friend had the same problem with a 9700 pro, with his games blacking out and his comp crashing. he got new drivers(this was a while ago) and it got fixed.

EDIT- also i fogot to mention, the card could be damaged. not by you or anything, but just a faulty card. when i got my ti 4200 the first time it was a faulty card, when i tried to start up my screen would go black and freeze. so it could be a faulty card maybe, if you try everything try to exchange the card.

well ...im not sure enough to be able to explain it in detail.

i dont want to tell you to do something that will screw up your computer.

that and bios for all mobos is slighty differant(sometimes its very differant).

Im sure someone on here can explain the types of settings you should be looking for.

btw what is the manufacture and model of you mobo?

edit: and does the manual/website for the card or mobo say anything about this type of problem

It's an ASUS P4P800. Checked the manual, nothing.:(

do you have another computer that you can test the gfx card in?

if so...try that

my bios said something about GAC (graphics something something i forgot), it was on 64, i put it on 128, u think thatll fix it? i havent tried it yet.

Im suprised no one esle is trying to help you :|

from the ati website

"When using an AGP graphics adapter the AGP aperture size settings should be set to "default" in the system CMOS setup. If a "default" option is not available try selecting 64M as the AGP aperture size setting.

Please see the documentation for your motherboard for specific details on accessing the CMOS setup."

AGP Aperture Size (MB)
Select the aperture size of the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP).

Description:
The aperture is a portion of PCI memory dedicated for graphics memory address space.

Common symptom:

If the memory aperture size is set too low you may experience:
Windows Protections Error during startup
Windows hangs at a black screen while loading
the system may boot correctly but hangs after a few minutes of operation
Default settings:
For most graphics cards, the BIOS default setting (usually 64MB) for the AGP Aperture Size should be used. If you are using a graphics card with a 128MB or more of memory installed a larger aperture size may need to be used.

changing this shouldnt effect anything

what version of catalyst drivers for your video card do you have installed? and do you have drivers for your monitor installed? i'd say make sure both of those are upto date, you have the extra power connector plugged into the 9800 right?

really? hmm, did they come on a cd? or did you download them? i'd recommend downloading the 3.6 catalyst drivers from ati's site.

That is the 3.6 drivers. :(

I fixed it to 4x agp though, and my games work now. However, I'm surprised my ASUS P4P800 doesn't support 8xagp. Or does it and am I missing something? I really would like to use 8x agp.

why do you want 8x agp? other than the fact that the card has it, do you think you're going to notice the difference? also you might want to look into a bios update, they might have fixed the issue.

It's not really a matter of why I want it, I just do! My mobo says 8xagp, my card has 8xagp, it should work, so there's something wrong...not sure what though. Hoping you guys could help me cuz your genius's.

check your motherboard manufacturers website for bios updates.

Checked......nope. :( Any other suggestions? ;(

Thx for all your help Xtasy, you didn't like me much in the beginning, but you've helped me a lot since then, thanks.

Guinny it sounds to me like you were experiencing the infamous "Loop Error" with 8x agp enabled. If your system is stable at 4x, just leave it at that, from what I've heard you won't even notice anything different.

Hey, be glad you were able to fix your loop error. I was having trouble with the same thing and literally tried to fix it for a month. I eventually had to take my Geforce 4 Ti4600 out and put my old geforce 2 mx 100/200 back in and I don't have to tell you that it sucks.

1) Dvd: go to bios and set DVD drive as primary or set primary to detect any cdroms(it should detect it)

2) If your monitor goes blank on games its possible that you have a problem with refresh rate. Try going into your /advanced/adapter/ and set it to lower refresh rate. If still not working try to disable Vsinc. It could also be of "Not enough power from power supply" try getting or using another supply power from a friend with higher power allowance.
-use default drivers that came with the video card.

Phew hope i was useful.

Ya and btw i am using radeon 9800 pro and i didnt havy ANY issues yet, maybe except of some MAJOR HEAT ISSUES !
