I never knew there were so many bugs with Radeon installations until I got struck myself.

Just bought myself a retail ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB yesterday. ($210.00) :cheese:

Tried to get it up and running but couldn't.
I removed all the old drivers, updated my AMD AGP drivers for my Asus mobo, installed the card, (seemed to work) installed the software, rebooted, and then the problems began. My windows login screen wouldn't appear (possibly off the screen due to low res.) But I was able to Tab, enter password and press enter, to get a result. Unfortunately the result was a "userinit.exe Application error" after clearing that, a portion of my wallpaper was visible (low res) no icons no task bar no startup programs, nothing.
Ctrl-Alt-Del...
"taskmgr.exe Application error"
Yoinked out the Radeon, replaced my Geforce 2 Ultra, everything is fine now.

I sent ATI an e-mail describing the problem in detail but they copy/pasted a reply telling me to check the FAQ (which I already had and my problem wasn't covered)

Help! Anyone have this problem?
My mobo is an Asus... dang forget the model # right now. I'll edit this post when I get the number.
My powersupply is 300W
My Nvidia drivers were all thoroughly removed.

I'm really hoping it's not a case of my mobo being to old. I don't have the funds to upgrade anything else right now. :(

Doesn't sound like a bug but an installation issue.

Have you tried the 9800Pro again since?

Generally you don't update agp drivers, remove gfx drivers, and install a new gfx hardware all in one reboot.
Usually you restart to apply any changes, updated AGP drivers for example.
If the drivers need to be applied before the card can be installed, this could explain your issue.

Does your agp slot have any notches? There have been issues when going from a 3.3volt Agp 2.0 to a 1.5volt Agp 3.0 card.

What's your powersupply?

Set your AGP apeture, in bios, to 64MB. Could try to disable System Cache to memory option as well.

Nope. No reason to suspect anything would be different if i tried it now. I'm reinstalling windows tonight though.Maybe I'll try it again tommorow.

Sorry, my bad. I did one at a time, rebooting after each step.

<Whoooosh!> (That was the sound of that going right over my head.)

300W "HiPro" provided by Voodoo computer's system builders.

My bios doesn't seem to have any setting related to AGP.

Hopefully your reinstall of windows will set the drivers strait. lol
We shall see.

a fresh install of windows is whats best, if for some reason your still having problems after that try the http://www.rage3d.com/ forums for answers (they helped me on getting my Fastwrites and AGP acceleration working properly without reformatting)

also when you re-install windows, it will run in VGA, download and install your INF drivers (on an intel board.. I dont know about AMD) from intel, install those first, then your Catalyst driver, then directx. (this will ensure that smartgart detects things correctly)

also before you format, have you tried pressing f8 as the computer is about to load windows, and then booting windows in VGA mode? (or even safe mode)?
and then installing?

Check the volt settings (btw, doesn't the 9800 require an extra strong power supply? or was it a floppy disk power cord to compensate for the AGP slot not being able to give enough power.
Anyway, best you check out specialized websites for that one. 3Dguru or rage3D like ^^ said.

Gah, old mobos strike again.

I had trouble getting a new GF4 ti 4200 to work on my 1.4 thunderbird rig a few years ago, realised it was the motherboard being an Abit P.O.S. - I flashed the BIOS and updated drivers (which said it would correct the issue) but it never did.

New motherboards are pretty cheap these days :)
