Well I can't believe I actually made it to getting my computer upgraded in time for HL2. Took forever (1 year) to scrounge and save up enough money to do it because of all my crazy bills. How ironic that all this time later, and the game still isn't out. Finally had some cash to spare and went out and bought the following the other day.

Asus K8N
Athlon 64 3000+
ATI Radon 9800 Pro 128MB
512 MB Samsung DDR400

(The Radeon I bought a few months ago)

Downloading 3DMark 05 now to find out my score.

Currently playing Farcry for the first time. (Wow) And Doom 3 is next. :bounce: :E

:naughty: Congrats! Nice system, fairly better than mines! Think of the RAM! What about the RAM?!?! You want 512 MB MORE!

but he already has a 9800 why would he upgrade to 256 mb..pointless

256mb cards dont work as well as 128mb ones due to driver issues...unless they finally fixed that, Asus I neeed you

no I think the extra 128 mb's just arent used. It will perform as fast as a 128mb card but because of driver bug the other 128mb's isnt used. So you can only use 128mb of a 256 card untill its fixed. I think im not sure someone else clarify.

:dozey: Aren't 256 MB based cards ideal for playing Half Life 2 and stuff? I thought I read that somewhere.

Yes, they fixed the 256MB memory efficency issue in the 8.07 driver, soon to be Cat. 4.11's. Not sure about the Cat. 4.10's.

It was just an efficiency issue and it did not prevent parts of the memory from working. Just wrote and managed data/textures in memory in a less efficient manner.
As for 128MB vs 256MB in general, the card still uses the 256MB's of memory but in many instances there is not a large performance gain over the 128MB cards in doing so. In other cases there is an advantage. Is that what you were thinking of?

...That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard today, 9800's with 256 almost all 256 MB on the card is used. (Maybe like 250 is actually used don't know the number exactly but It aint 128 lol)
Ya my mistake I miss read another persons post stating that on 256's cards not all memory was used. Because he was comparing the 128 to the 256 with the memory bug It sounded like he said that the bug only allowed the cards to use half the memory there.

256 MB or 128 MB... All I know is I'm loving my new computer as it is now. I'm already dreading the inevitable system bog down that happens over time. I'm to lazy to reformat/re-install everything. I just can't get over how ironic the timing of this is. HL2 gold, and a brand new computer. Woohoo!
Oh I forgot to mention i also got a Seagate 120GB HD 7200 rpm. And yes I'm considering another 512 or Ram.
