half life 2 is coming soon. and so are the spoilers. i have 2 plans

1. dont let anyone make a new account from now until 2005

that way people can still comment, but no one can register in order to spam us with spoilers.

OR

2. close down the site until 2005

this would suck but it would accomplish the same thing.

this WILL be a problem, lets do something now to control it. thanks.

or just dont go to the site/spoiler threads.
agreed.. We're not gonna basically kill the site just cause a few people will be unable to help themselves clicking on spoiler links :p

We could always make every new post an automatic spoiler tag wrapped post..

i dont see how stopping new registrations would kill this site, look, *****s will come on here and spew crap without spoiler tags, we all know it, itll be in the subject line too, im just worried. personally i wont be visiting the site until after i finish playing, but others wont be able to stay away.

We could always hire a bunch more temp staff and put posts in a moderator queue before the rest of you see them..

tbh its best people who don't want it spoiler don't look at the site until they completed it.

Both of those aren't options really - we can't close the site or stop people registering.

What we can do though, is hire more moderators to ensure that spoiler tags are used, and thread titles have things like "SPOILER" in them, so people don't have to read them.

Hopefully, the majority of the community will be helpful enough to make sure that spoilers are covered properly. Obviously people will want to discuss the game though.

We cant effectively kill the site when the game that this site is made for is released.

im not talking about the users here, im talking about people doing spoiler attacks on purpose.

Doesn't really matter what others think though, we _wont_ be either shutting the site down, or disabling new registrations.

Best thing to do is just not look at the site until you've finished it :)

Nobody should look at the site until they have finished the game anyway, how can you come to a games forums and comment without having played through the game after it's released into the wild?
Seems like silly priorities to me, anyone that'd do that.

meh, I dont go into hl2 discussion anyway its always been full of crap. Just switch your mind off like I do, skim the text and get the idea, realise its a spoiler and report it, without remembering any of the details. Maybe only I can do that since im a mindless fool :p

Dont forget you can use the minimize section buttons to hide the whole thing entirely, so you wont even SEE the thread titles neither.. I do that sometimes myself. (its the little button on the title of that section to the right, for anyone who didn't realise it exists)

I think the most important thing we can do to kinda stop that from happing would be to hammer the report button, no?

Reporting posts does help a lot yeah.. and now we're not having thousands sent to every mod's email address everytime we're more inclinded to look at them :)

So yeah, report posts and they do get sorted.

I've noticed that... I've started doing that a few months ago... seems to work :)

I just think the bribes have finally had an impact ;);)

That and for every report thats made that we sort out, we make a post so other mods know its been sorted out :)

Who in the first place is visiting this site when you have HL² to play

just out of curiousity, is there a way of checking how many times a user has reported posts? i know i probably have an average of reporting 1.5 posts per week or something...

You know you can just click on the little minus sign at the right of a forum to minimize it, so then you can't see any of the topic names, either :)

None that I know of no. Doesn't it up your post count anyway? I can search a users posts and your reported posts come under that.

ah.. so u don't have any stats to go by.. just the posts being reported and the report itself... i see.

...How About...

How about, when there is a spoiler tag used in a thread, the title of the thread has a "Contains Spoilers" message written in front of it?

Even thought the message in the thread is wrapped in spoiler tags, people replying to it, might not think to add spoiler tags of their own. I remember this happened two months ago when Chris_D replyed (in spoiler tags) about a new vehicle in the game. In the next post, some guy replyed about this new vehicle, but didn't hide it in a spoiler, and therefore ruined it for the rest of us.
It was about 30 minutes before a moderator edited the posts. That's quite some time.

With the "Contains Spoiler" message to be written in title threads whenever the spoiler tags are used, this will help people decide which threads they want to look at.

Also, lets make use of those rating things on the far right of the forum description. Whenever a "Report Post" is used in a thread, a red warning label (or something more creative) appears at the side. This will disappear only when a moderator looks through the thread, and gives it the ok. This will not only further aid the moderators in searching for bad posts, but it will allow the forum users to be able to aviod such threads, until they are clean again. :)

Hiring more moderators would be a big help; but until that happens, this theory could be taken into consideration.

Of course abstinence is the most effective key :p

Easier if you just assume every thread contains a spoiler.

I'm leaving, for about a month or so, starting on the 15th of this month. That's a fact.
