So I got this 60GB PS3 in Feb. Apparently since this past Saturday, it started making loud fan noise. The fan noise got louder and it sounded just like Xbox360 when it's not playing a game. The noise got worse and now I'm gonna sell this sucker and buy myself 40GB PS3.

This sucks...

You should sell your PS3 and buy a wii.

Have you tried vacuuming out the vents on the PS3? It could be that the air ways and fans are congested because of dust build up. Before you sell it try that.

I've literally tried everything from vacuuming to moving ps3 position. And the damn fan is still loud. Apparently, I'm not the only one who is having this issue. It's a well known issue for 60GB and 80GB PS3.

Try some compressed air if you haven't. It gives you a lot more air power than simply vacuuming it.

It's not the dusts faut. Apparently, both 60gb and 80gb uses some old 90nm chipset and it makes the console hotter.

I've got the old 60GB one and haven't had this happen yet ... but is it causing any actual problems or just being loud? I'm sure it's annoying but I personally wouldn't sacrifice backwards compatibility and whatever money you'll lose in the switch by going to a 40GB model.

Maybe you should call Sony and see if they offer suggestions/will fix it.

Sony won't do jack shit about console being loud. They say it's perfectly normal for PS3 to have loud fan because it's trying to protect itself from overheating. If that does not work, they will just send refurbished 60GB that will most likely in worse condition than my current 60GB.

I'm not taking that chance or waste my time doing that. I'm just selling this one and buying 40GB. BC is nothing since I already have PS2.

Remove the digestive system and stop feeding it. Non organic things shouldn't be crapping on you!

Who really cares about backwards compatibility? 90% of the thousands of games in the Sony games library are shitty games anyways.

The same can be said about Xbox's library of games too.

Might be the fan bearing that has gone, replace the fan.

Considering the amount of games the PS2 released over it's lifespan, having 10% of good quality games is actually quite a lot. That said, people should just stop saying "Sell X and get Y" whenever one of these console threads come about. It's not like the owner's are unaware of the choice of consoles available when they purchased X in the first place. Not to mention it's annoying and contributes absolutely nothing to the thread except push it towards a flame war.

edit: As to the OP, if you own a PS2 then BC is a moot point for you I suppose. Personally I'd live with the loud(er) fan unless the cost involved in the switch is negligible, then I'd might re-consider. Although one thing to keep in mind is that the PS2 is notorious for disc read errors later on in it's lifespan.

I have all the consoles. Now stop telling me I should exchange "this console" to "that console".

seriously WTF is the point of this thread? And stop being a pussy bitch, so what if it's making noise?

My PS3 is damaged within 4 months, which I hardly used. The fan just kicks in 3rd gear within 1 minute after turning on the console and that is not normal for PS3. Thus my point is PS3 is piece of shit.

at least it hasn't completley crapped out like my housemates which just threw up error messages and graphic glitches whenever a game was played, i imagine from overheating

sony customer services were brilliant though. they said send it back and we'll get a new one out to you, no questions asked. he had his brand spanking new one through within 3 days

My warranty is expired so I have to pay them $150 for replacing ps3. I'm not even going to bother since most of people who got their ps3 replaced by sony has either same or worse problem than their original PS3.

funny, me mates warranty had expired aswell but he didn't have to fork out

Thread title had me excited.

I'll be going, then.
