Fans.

Ever since I was 7, living abroad in Malaysia and Dubai until I was about 16, ive slept with the manditory AC or fans (usually overhead ones) on due to the temperatures at night.

Coming back to the UK, even during the winter (wtf), ive slept pretty much every night with a fan on in my room. Only time I dont have it on is if im slept in someone else's room.

So the past 3 nights ive tried sleeping with my fan off, to rid myself of this energy wasting addiction. My progress? Falling asleep hasnt been affected really, however ive been waking up like 3-4 times a night for no apparent reason, when usually it takes a hurricane inside my room to wake me up. I once stayed asleep in Malaysia when the police RAIDED my room pistols drawn etc etc when my parents heard someone breaking in on our bottom floor.

Am I not alone in this crazy world of fan addiction at night? Im in the UK for god sake, the hell is wrong with me.

perhaps it's just the repetition that makes you stay asleep. experiment with white/pink noise from an mp3 player or something.

I slept with a fan for about..6 years running. Whenever I didn't have it I found it much harder to fall asleep. But easier if there's a large heater going, or some kind of subtle background noise.

That could be what it is, just having some kind of noise running in the background.

I dont like it when its deadly quiet, be it dark or during the day, my senses just overload and I hear ANYTHING in like a magnified effect. A twig could snap and my heart would do that jump thing when you get scared and your brain dumps the adrenaline. Aha, sounds so OTT, but thats what it feels like. Maybe im just scared of the dark still, monsters in shadows and all that crap.

My nose always clogs up so it feels like its hard to breathe whenever I havent got air moving around me...if that makes sense. In the car for example I HAVE TO have the fans on, albeit on a low setting, else I get really hot and irritatable as a result.

Yep, I cant sleep without a fan on.

Try leaving the PC/laptop on, maybe the cooling fans work to the same effect!

For science!!!

same here dude...i'm having a hard time falling asleep (when not too tired) without some constant background noise, be it a fans hum, water flow or some other kind of low frequency sound.

i really hate absolute quiet...it feels so boring and empty. i really enjoy sleeping by the river or in a car at ~2500rpm.

i read that a lot of people have the same problem if they don't have a certain noise they are accustomed to in the background...like city dwellers to cars, the sound of the clock ticking or crickets at night.
just use an mp3 to play a preferred sound in the background.
or begin the process of rehabilitation...but after all it's not really a dangerous addiction more of an annoyance.

lol, i can't sleep without my fan on either!

I've been doing this since i was about 9 or 10. I've grown to like the cold.

I love sleeping with a fan on.

But I must ask, the police came in because your parents called them because of a burglar? Or they thought the police were the burglars?

If the latter, explain why the police broke in.

This, Jesus Christ tell us more about the police raid, **** your fan addiction.

I only use a fan when its dastardly hot. But yeah, you just want to marry one.

No my parents called the police because they heard someone attempting to break in downstairs. Our house in Malaysia was 3 stories, and the bottom floor was the maid's quarters and what was basically one big-ass games room.

They tried to break in via the maid's kitchen area, which had metal bars over the windows and doorway, inside the room itself; so they got into the kitchen but then couldnt get any further.

My parents called the police, their room is upstairs and mine is in the middle floor. The police told my parents not to go downstairs, and they were bursting into our house 5 minutes later (apparently). Naturally the burglars legged it at the sound of sirens so werent caught, but we still suspect it was some guys from the building site a few houses away due to their boot prints.

So yeah, police did a sweep of our house all swat-like (white people in trouble meant the police completely went over the top for our safety) and 'cleared' my room. I didnt even flinch so my parents left me sleeping. Simple really heh.

I can't sleep without a fan either.. Well I can, but like you I wake up alot. I figure **** it. A waterfall is running my power and it's not going to run out anytime soon.

Damn man I can't stand sleeping without AC. You wake up here drenched in sweat if you do.

Yeah last night I had one of those moments where you wake up and basically fall straight back to sleep, and I remember having a clamy chest so id obviously been sweating a bit.

Its quite funny being in the UK telling people why I have a fan in my room when they come in, theyre always like 'wtf its cold here, why do you want to be cold at night?'

I can't tolerate being hot and trying to sleep, I love the cold, and usually have 1 or 2 fans going when I go to bed.

I just dont sleep, no joke
im addicted to the computer, i have been for about 3-4months. I cant stop.
I'll be on msn till 6 o'clock in the morning get an hours sleep then go to school, sometimes i just dont sleep at all. No wonder im failing all my exams.

Yeah that's actually an addiction. Media/Internet addiction is more commonly diagnosed and it can have as much of an effect on your social life (including work, school, etc) as regular drug addiction.

You're just lucky it doesn't effect your body like yayo or meth does.

Over here at the moment it's too cold to need a fan! I only use one in the summer when it's really hot, but I've still got it in my room just because i can't be arsed moving it.

I bought a fan in September because I needed one in June.

Irony muffins fed to the ironymonger.

My fan is broken, gotta buy another one asap because it helps me sleep, even if it's cold.

I have no prerequisites for sleep, what's wrong with me?

Me too. I have a standing fan so even if its freezing in my room (which it usually is) I just turn it on and point it away from me because I cant sleep without the noise.
