My site layout need crits

There isnt much to criticize really. It doesnt look to be very far along so I'd keep plugging away until theres a bit more there. It doesnt look very mature, and its very rough. A good way to start is to look through some templates, www.freewebtemplates.com is a good site, and try and emulate the ones you like.

A little plain and the Photoshop filter logo is a minus. The text doesn't really match the buttons either imho. I gues i'm not one to talk, my site is in my sig :<. Keep working on it, get creative, it'll help you out a lot in the long run.

*Gets out crit book and pen*

The PS effect might be good, but it's a bit bold, try to fade it out, give it a Dark Blue title, and make sure it can tile effectively.
Change the names to something a bit less technical and a bit shorter... more websitey in general (can't put it another way :P):
'Home', 'Work', 'Guestbook' (fine), 'Contact Me/Us'
The buttons are very square and all the same size. Get rid of the bevel, and make them work into the Top Bar a bit more. If anything, indent them because the Top Bar is already bevelled.
Don't use a black font. Try a blue colour. Find a good font, not Arial/Verdana whatever. Make the font size the the buttons smaller.
PUT THEM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUTTONS
Don't have the same button size, you can adjust them accordingly, as long as you don't change the height.
Keep the same font (size, faux, type etc.) all the way through
The top bar needs shrinking considerably
The background to the main page is too bold
The title is too plain, have at least a line underneath. Something to make it more interesting. Something subtle, not obvious though.
The top part drowns the main page
Don't use black. Use dark blue. And a lighter blue background. (again)
Make the main page more interesting (I know there's nothing on it, but give it a subtle background in the corner, a slight swirl, or something, it's too much of a contrast against the banner)
The news would be on the 'Index', or 'Home' page, rather than in a seperate page. What else would you put in your home page :P
Find a theme... stick to it

... *runs out of more ideas/critisisms*

Hope that helped you :D
If you do anything else, please post it here. Or talk 2 me on msn ([email protected])

The buttons are huge , if you make them like a 3rd of their current size or even less , it will look alot better

From the top... again

Don't decrease the contrast, decrease the opacity and put a bluey layer beneath it
In relativeness, the banner is too high, shrink it and duplicate it, flip it over and add it to the end so it looks like it's continious. This means you'll be able to account for more screen resolutions
Nonono! The top bar was fine before, just too big. I'm glad all the fonts are the same, but arial was good, just too big. And I said a Dark blue, with that you can hardly read it.
The rounded buttons with hard bevel, no! Try and smooth one, using a drop shadow, and make it slightly shiny with a gradient. For more help on that, you're going to have to PM/MSN me ;).
If you're going to fade the buttons with the bar, make them the same colour. But I wouldn't suggest the outer bevel at all, I would suggest that you get rid of the buttons altogether, and make the text appear to be chiselled into the bar.
Lighter blue background still
Bigger title or smaller text on buttons.
The buttons are allowed to be different sizes vertically, especially so that the text fits them. The Guestbook clearly doesn't fit, so resize it, giving it the same padding as the others

Again, hope that helped :)
Still needs to be abit more interesting on the main page... read my original comments again in case you missed the ones I added

I think you shouldnt over-use the bevel and emboss effect, it makes the site look amateur-ish somehow :|

This may be tentative, but the type used in the buttons is definitely not working. Keep simplifying the design and make sure the functionality is your top priority. Once it's clean and easy to use, then you can nitpick more details.

Alright, but let me add one more thing.

I am new to designing web layouts. This is the first time I'm making one and I'm glad I have some good critics to help me out. I know I have to darken it a bit more and fix the buttons so far

Yes, structure is diffinitely needed
You don't need to go as far as that, but definitely some structure

Critisizing your latest work:
The banner is much better, but you still need a title to make it something.
The top bar is much too thick, make it thinner.
The Buttons need to be vertically centered in the top bar, and there needs to be alot less space between them
Get rid of the outerglow! *pukes*
Again, the buttons are allowed to be different sizes! Just make sure there is the same space around the text. Don't have different sizes of text, keep them the same spacing... DON'T RESIZE!
I like the gradient, good work there, but the buttons are too tall
Change the font on the buttons.
Keep equal spacing all around the layout. Otherwise it does look very amatuerish
Don't have a black border around the frames, make the background really light blue, the frame-background light blue and the border and text dark blue
The picture's fine as it's a picture :P

That's about it, good work
