So I just found what I think is a really good deal on this TV I've been saving for. It's 1300 for a Panny P54S1 shipped to my door. So I call my Step Dad (He's a bit of a TV Guru) and ask him what he thinks. Convo goes as such:

Evil Step Father (ESF): "Oh, you just bought a house. You shouldn't be looking at that stuff. You need to save your money."

Me: "I did save my money. And now I would like to own a television. What do you think of this deal?"

ESF: "You shouldn't be looking at that kind of stuff." (He does this, where he won't give any advice if he doesn't agree with the matter at hand) You don't need to be buying a plasma TV right now.

Me: "I guess I'll ask someone else then.

ESF: "Oh, hey. I just bought a 42" I don't need. Want to buy it off me?

DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK.

And no, he isn't going to give me "a deal". He'll sell it to me for the same price he's putting it on craigslist for, and not a penny less.

Yeah. Video tape it and show it to him.

That'll teach him.

how old were you when he became your step dad. also it sounds like you dont have a good relationship to begin with

I was 4 or 5. It's funny, because everything that I've read indicated that he would "mentally" have become a father figure to me because of the age that it happened at. I'm 22 now, and I couldn't feel further from that. The only time we get along AT ALL is when we talk about cars. O_O

Also, my real dad died when I was about ten, so you would think he would be even more of a father figure.

Yeah, if he's not going to give his opinion on whether it is a good deal or not, and is just going to be opposing any purchased whatsoever, you need to stop asking for his opinion.

people dont always automatically fill in a role. there's plenty of parents who are parents in name only

also it's a two way street. he should have bonded with you at an early age

I hated my dad for years but deep down still loved him. do you have any feelings for your step dad?

also, now bear with me for a sec ...is he right? should you be buying a big screen so soon after buying a house? I know closing costs plus general maintenance set me back quite a bit when I first moved in. maybe he's just being a parent? it's our job to be overly protective of our offspring, even to the point of it being irrational

Both of my parents remarried, so I've got two step parents. In my experience, it's reeeaaaallly difficult to keep things smooth.

In retrospect - if you want to get along - I think you basically have to go all or nothing. You have to be close as you can stand, or distant as you can be. And most of that effort will fall on you.

I agree with that.

I agree. I think he tried, but he just isn't good at it.

I would say I do. It's more of a respect thing. I know that he grew up poor and is a bit of a self made rich-man. And hasn't let it go to his head.

also, now bear with me for a sec ...is he right? should you be buying a big screen so soon after buying a house?

I'm not going to say he is right, but he is not wrong either. It's part of the problem. His favorite card in the deck is the neutral safety card.

I know closing costs plus general maintenance set me back quite a bit when I first moved in. maybe he's just being a parent?

Definately. But with an $8,000 tax credit coming from the government, plus the money I've saved, this stuff is already paid for.

it's our job to be overly protective of our offspring, even to the point of it being irrational

While I think that definitely applies here, his take on this is slightly more "evil". He's protecting himself. He wants to avoid giving any bad advice, not because he might hurt me (my situation), but because then he would be wrong. It's crazy.

I'll give you a good representation of him. If he was playing 21, and was at ANYTHING over 11, he WOULD NOT HIT.

Completely safe. Nothing wrong with that, it's worked out for him in his life. But I can't help but feel I would be a much more superior person if I had blown off some of his advice at a younger age, and just done my own, risky, thing.

This thread is going way further than intended.

I wish I had a step dad ..just so I can love him like the step father I never had

I also like long walks on the beach, playing scrabble and manhugs from imaginary step fathers dressed as clowns

I agree. I think he tried, but he just isn't good at it.

I had ZERO experience with kids before having my own. my kids call me at work sometimes to ask when I'm coming home. it's not something you're "good" at. it just comes naturally

parents want what's best for their kids

you'll understand when you're a parent. no really. that's absolutely true. my parents always said "you'll understand when you have kids" ...and they were right

my very first year at my house, my drainage pipes burst requiring $9000 to fix ..there will always be something unexpected. the worst thing is if something happens that you cant afford and have to go to your parents you'll hear the "I told you so"

Ill contine a little later on, gotta step out of the office for a bit

I get all the protective parenting stuff. But that shit went out the window when he tried to hustle me a tv from him.

Here's a thought that will piss you off. Your evil step father has been dicking your mom for the past 18 years.

Wow. Maybe we should get together then. We can exchange our feelings on dealing with the early death of a father figure, and you can give me advice on how you dealt with your childhood that I could apply to mine.

Or, ya know, we could get hammered and play beer pong while listening to White Pony.

Which ever.

*Edit*

You don't know anyone named Pauloo (spelling) or Rafi, do you? Just some dudes I know in Turlock..

Meh. Doesn't bother me. It's her choice. People should persue what makes them happy.

I read the title as "My Stepdad is a ****ing chick" and I was like ... Hot?

"Son, I'm in the middle of a quote war! If I'm not back by supper-time, dig my grave next to the dog's!"

You know, Ole Sterny and I are quite the opposite in so many ways. Many many ways.

But I can't help but say, QFT.

Yeah everybody just pirates TV sets. What the **** are you talking about?

I think he either meant, who watches TV anymore (I don't) or why not just buy a TV/monitor for PC and TV watching.

This is what I was thinking as well, until I read the part about him wanted to sell Top his own TV. Clearly he wasnt just trying to keep him from spending money, he just wanted sell his instead of letting a shop get the sale.

I was pretty much nodding my head on the phone during the whole "you shouldn't be looking into buying that stuff" (Even though I know I can afford it).

I then got wide-eyed and quiet when he swung in the whole "I'll sell you one" speech.

People talk about cars all the ****ing time and I never know what they're on about.

Half the time it's a bunch of numbers, fast-sounding words and the occassional macho grunt.

I did that too. Was nice to know how long I had to hide the porn and booze. ;)

QUOTED FOR MOTHER ****ING TRUTH.

me "Hi mom, how's work?"

Mom "eh, it's ok, what's up?"

me "oh, I dunno, I was just wondering when you're coming home. It's awful boring over here :( :( :("

Mom "awww, it's my long day at work today sweetie, so you'll have to make due. Go watch tv or something"

me (pouty voice) "ooooooookkkkkkkk...."

me "yo man, take another hit, we've got the house for another hour or two"
