Ok I know alot of these threads are made, but I want to know if I could run HL2. I don't care if I haveto run it at 800 x 600 screen size. I don't have the money to upgrade my comp like most of you other guys. If I did I would, ok here are the specs.
Pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHz
1.99GHz
512 MB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
I know this probably isnt enough info, but I don't really know where to get all my system specs and stuff. I will update this if someone tells me how :hmph:

There is in-fact a sub-forum dedicated to tech questions!

As far as I know, your computer will run HL2 great on high settings at 1024x768.

yes it will, but in dx8 mode and most things set to medium or low.
?!?!?!?

I beg to differ... I have worse than him, and I run CS:S medium to high...

1.6 Pentium 4
512 RAM
GForce ti4400

Do you loose much framerate? Or none at all? :O

A Geforce TI4600 is definetely NOT worse than a 5200. A 5200 is TERRIBLE.

nope, he may have a better cpu but his graphics card is in the simplest terms "A POS" yours kicks it's arse two ways to sunday and then asks for seconds.

A geforce 4 Ti is waaaay better then a fx 5200.

My thoughts exactly.. and anyway, back to the subject at hand.. I have almost identical system specs.. I can run CS:S (with a modded .cfg file, for higher fps) on around low-medium settings, and get around 30-60 frames per second, depending on what's going on..

If you have any money to plunk down, I suggest you get the 9800 PRO, which is on sale right now at Best Buy.

I think I should be able to run HL2 at medium to high settings. I can run Doom 3 at Ultra High without loosing much framerate. But I mean...ah forget it. I should be able to run it decent enough if I can run Doom 3 at Ultra High.

Ahhhh....

Are we feeling ok? :p

First of all, I said 4400...

And second.. I tend to think that 5200 is a BIGGER number than 4400.. And FX is much better than TI.

Where do you get your material?

EDIT: Am I mis-understanding something here?
I always had it in my mind that FX and a bigger number meant better.....

And because they cost more...

I was kinda looking to buy another NVIDIA card. But are ATI cards better? (I have never had an ATI card before  )

whoa dude, he said ti4400, not the 4600, and as far as i've been informed the 4400 is as good as the 5200 ultra, as in not much better than the 5200 regular.

For HL2, and in general, yes.

I also heard if I bought one of the newest video cards out on the market NVIDIA or ATI I would need a new mother board...

ah computer Newbies at their best. It's a simple fact, and no we don't need proof to back it up, its well known to any one that knows anything about graphics cards (which you obviously don't) so just go ask at a hardware fourm (not IGN or some other console/game forum) but something like hardocp, anadtech etc. they will set you straight.

The only reason I am asking alot of questions is because I am not really big on computer hardware....meaning I don't know that much.

Well the FX has DX9...

And don't say I know NOTHING about video cards... I obviosly know SOME things.

I figured his processor could back up the lesser core quality of the 5200.

You can't just judge people like that.

yes I can, when its panifully obvious.

and dx9 on the 5200 is a joke, its a gimick feature, Its WAY to weak to avtually use it. (hell the 5900 ultras in cases are to weak to use it at times)

Then can I judge you on your grammar? :p

j/k

Okay, you got me there I guess.

I am only 15, and actually learned what the different components of a computer are less than a year ago.

I would say I learned pretty fast considering those statistics...

If I were to get that ATi 9800 PRO would I need a new mother board?

What kind of motherboard do you have? Check around and see if it has AGPx4 or AGPx8, if so, it'd work fine... if not.. :(

I dont know how to check what kind of mother board I have ;(
EDIT: Wait I think I found it. If I look under control panel, preformance and maintenance then under the device manager then under the Computer thing would that be it?
