I have been away for a few days. A hurricane developed a grudge for my hometown. We evacuated. From my northern abode, I watched the Weather Channel, and their reporters were having great fun talking about the storm as it entered the gulf and became more and more powerful. You could almost see them smile as they revealed the destruction - shattered windows, trees in the streets, through houses, and sometimes utterly obliterated by tornado-like winds.
Coming back, we saw relatives houses with trees sticking through them like accupuncture, and never found others - they were washed away by the ~20 ft storm surge. Only recently did we get power back, and more recently still did the internet return.
And what do I find? There's been an release candidate! Valve is suing Vivendi! There's some kind of third test! The Sims 2 and Rome Total War, two games that I have waited so, so long for, have been released! The world as we know it is combusting! But the sad thing is, I could care less.
I have to say, even though little things like Half-Life 2 don't seem nearly as important now, it is nice to have a safe place outside of time and space - while in real life, I pick up the shattered remains of my yard, I can come inside and escape into a much more favorable unreality. That is why I love computers.
By the way, anyone who can figure out where this thread title comes from wins a cookie (or a biscuit, as you crazy Brits would say. )!
