The image below is a montage of different rendering shots for my very first weapon a Walther P99 (always was impartial to James Bond) I have been modelling for about 2 weeks and this is what I have produced as my first Model usable with HL2 and SDK

Sorry for the poorer quality but it was for people who still have dial-up etc. The most annoying thing about this was not the doing it but the trying to get decent render pics of it. Anyway comments and questions feel free to offer constructive criticism but don’t post if your just offering slander as that’s a load of b*ll*cks.

Thanks

not bad for your first model, it looks a lil blocky in some places but that could be just ur render.

looks good for a first model. definately too flat. a good place to start would be checking out ichi's VTM's (assuming you used max) www.3dbuzz.com would be another good place to look at some tutorials for rounding edges without wasting polies. overall good job. keep it up.

another good tip would be ur presentation i think you shouldnt show us the model with opacity ...but proper full renders from various angles and a well lit environment

You need to go through the model and optomize a lot of the parts, you can take a lot out without any noticeable differences. Also, the grip needs to be rounded, instead of completely flat.

it looks very cool. just ad more detail on the sides... if it has any detail on the side

you should work on smooth groups, and just general detail, here is my version of that gun that i made 2 months ago.

Okay firstly thank you for all you advice hints and general feedback. Secondly let me address the major points you brought up in this broadcast:

1.Yes it is quite blocky I not sure why I didn't pay more attention to it but I guess its lack of experience and time but in future weapon designing I'll be sure to do the gun more justice.

2.Yes I am using 3DS Max 7 and I have those VTM's and their quite useful as well, also if anyone has any advice or tutorials on rendering in Max 7 (assuming its not 3Dbuzz.com) as that did cause a bit of a headache.

3.Optimisation - definitely in one word however as always on a future weapon I'll make improvements in this area and take more attention to removing the spare crap I don't need. Same really applies for smoothing and smooth groups.

By the way does doing it with the XSI Mod Tool make this process any better? Does XSI have any advantages over MAX that would make me go d'load it? and mikeandike22 your P99 is very good I am impressed. Anyway thank you again for you input.

Well Gj.. if it's your first one.. actually.. very good job.. ;)

whether XSI is better than max is not a discussion we want to get into again :) there arealready thousands of topics discussing the pros and concs of each. best advice would be to use both. if you find one more intuitive use that one. I've always used max because i use autocad in my job so it familiar to me. as far as max 7 specific tutorialsl it's not neccesary that they be for 7. most of the tools we use for modeling weapons haven't changed since r.3
