Hi all,
So, I am not really modelling a game as such. I am a chronic nerdly fan of the cancelled TV show Firefly, and I am building the spaceship Serenity's interior as a Half Life 2 level, which allows you to walk around on the ship, and possibly make machinima in it.

It's a fun project.

But as you can imagine, it's getting HUUUUUUUGE. If you're familiar with the show, I've completed the lower decks, and most of the upper decks - just the crew quarters and the bridge to go. Compile time is insane, and the model will no longer run on a computer with less than 2GB of ram.

So I've been reworking bits to take out faces and generally use less to create more. Only, I really really want the detail.

My question is, if I model things in an external editor and then import them as props, will this reduce the system requirements necessary to draw them, rather than building them inside Hammer? I'm not talking about bulkheads here, rather things such as pipes. There are millions of pipes running along all the corridors inside Serenity. Oh, and ladders, tables and chairs, couches, etc.

Any ideas?

Use lots of props, as much as you can. And put more detail in textures.

Replacing complex brushwork with an equivilant model will help improve performance overall as it's cheaper to render them. The only problem is the amount of work you may have to put into it.
