(n00p Question) how can i make a sky ?

Make a big box surrounding your map (top and bottom too) and give it the material Skybox. Then you can change the type of sky by going to Map>Map Properties and its one of the options there
 
Don't make a big box surrounding your map. Just make the sky brushes where your gonna see them. There's no sense in making a big box surrounding everything because when it compiles it'll have to for the entire map, including everything you'll never see.

Put the sky brushes where you'll see the sky. Make sure the map is sealed, use nodraw surfaces on area's you can't see while playing the map normally. It'll compile much faster and work better.
 
What do you mean "Make the map sealed?" Does that mean I have to make the brush the will be the sky be right next to the walls?

I hate nubs that make maps with skyboxes like that.

Make sure that there are NO holes in your maps.
Make each block perfect
Never allow blocks to pass through each other.

"Can't load skybox file skybox/italyup to build the default cubemap!"

Has anyone had this problem before in their compiler? I get this all the time, no matter how I make a skybox. I tried making a 1/16th model with a skycamera entity like the Help section said, I tried just making a giant box, I tried making the sky just one box with the skybox texture and all others were nodraw.

Here is what I did. I rearranged my map so it was basically a giant square with blocks being the walls I put another giant block for the ceiling and one for the floor. since the floor was already covered, i made it nodraw. The ceiling has the skybox texture and I went to map properties and changed the Skybox Texture Name to "skybox/italyup."

What did I do ?

I think you can just put "italy" in the sky name bit.

Wha-- what is that blue-ness above my map? Is..is that sky? It is! I've neve seen it before! I didn't recognize at first.

Ok - thanks for the help as well.

However, I seem to be able to see a little bit of a darker line in a square around the sky. Makes it look like a cube.

Any thoughts on what this is?
 
Maybe your sky has multiple faces on the exposed side (meaning that you have a square cut into it) or it could be that your sky is sitting off of the walls a a few inches.
 
what are the names of the half life 2 skys my skyboxes never work and i am frustrated!!!!!!!
 
while we're on topic anyone have a name of a night sky? I've been fiddling with borealis it doesn't work...
