per post at least. You have to justify.

I'll start.

Tv on the Radio.

Because of "Staring at the Sun", which makes me feel like having sechs.

*edit* since people are forgetting about it, name a song along with it

Milburn

Fine fine lad-rock (as NME dubbed it .. urgh)

It's just catchy, relatable and great!

EDIT: Lipstick Lickin' or Blow Your Whistle or Brewster as stand out tracks.

R.E.M.

So many songs for so many moods.

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

If some other singer had performed that song, I reckon it would be world-famous. Famous, meaning songs like Sitting on the Dock of the Bay etc.

lol sprafa i told you they're amazing.

tv on the radio for me too right now

Well, as this is single musicians and not groups, I'll go ahead and be the first to mention Trent Reznor.

His ability to write and arrange songs in so many different styles and patterns with so many different instruments is nearly unparalleled today.

I do like Somewhat Damaged... the heavy drums, the powerful (if not varied) bassline, the layered arrangement, the not-entirely-blunt lyrics, all contribute to the awesomeness of this song.

Aphex Twin

Talented. Versatile. Awesome remixes. Even his peel-out is great. Eccentric. And all the while, he couldn't give less of a shit about the whole thing. He is my idol.

Because he is pretty much all over the place, reccomending a song is hard. But, if I had to choose something approaching an epitome, it would be Ziggomatic 17. One long-ass track that goes through so many transformations before crystalyzing at its end. It's beautiful.

Donald Fagen

Every song is reference quality and filled with strange humor.

The Goodbye Look
-Track 7 on "The Nightfly"

Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel

Since he is essentially the band, I included both.

His music is incredibly beautiful yet pretty simple. And his lyrics have some of the oddest metaphors and symbolism I've ever heard. His music really makes you appreciate life and those around you. The first song I believe I heard by him was "King of Carrot Flowers" and the very first lyric When you were young, you were the king of carrot flowers played and I instantly fell in love. One of his most simple songs, yet the way he sings it and the comforting melody take you away into his mind and set you up for what to except with the rest of the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Hmm that was a bit long...

One musician? Hm. That precludes several of my favourites and leaves me wondering whom I should mention.

How about Travis Tritt, primarily for Best of Intentions? "Never could build you a castle, even though you're the queen of my heart."

Gomez - Get Miles
Because the live version makes me want to sing along every damn time.

Dead Kennedys

Y'know, I could love Dead Kennedys for their humourous and witty lyrics alone. Biafra is a genious. He didn't care the consequence; he went up against alot, but he wrote about it, twisting it with his own darkened humour. The guy was so tongue-in-cheek, taking shots at people and things in songs [moronic drunkards in 'Too Drunk To ****' and all-talk/mouth revolution wannabes in 'Life Sentance'] as of his own opinion on them. The music, too, is great. Catchy riffs and basslines from Ray and Klaus, abliet simple.

Eh, I'm no good writing reviews. Listen to Dead Kennedys.

Sonic Boom Six

Is it punk? Is it Hardcore? Is it Hip-Hop? Is it Reggae? Is it Ska? Is it Dub? Is it Dancehall? Is it Metal?

No, its all of these things! Amazing live (mega-dance-pit-fun-spectacular!), intelligent and relevant lyrics, seemlessly blending every genre under the sun to produce mighty rock goodness. Give them a few years, and they could be big, maybe even Capdown big.

Best songs: Bigger Than Punk Rock, Northern Skies, The Rape of Punk To Come

Noel Gallagher

Helped define a generation of music, and wether you like him or not, he is still putting out great tracks today.

Oh yeah, and if you hear him interviews, he`s funny as ****.

Best song:- Live Forever

John Lennon. This isn't very fair, but for songs, how about almost every Beatles song written?

(Not discarding McCartney here, just prefer Lennon).

I completely agree with ludah.. richard d james has achieved financial independence making music only for himself. and he's made most of his music in his morning robe. plus that he's discovered other very awesome musicians like tom jenkinson (squarepusher) and mike paradinas (mu-ziq)

i can't be arsed to recommend a song, partly because no one really gives a shit about music anybody else likes, and partly because he is rather prolific and very varied in his musical styles.

aphex twin is very much ftw.

selected ambient works volume II remains one of my favorite albums of all time

Trent Reznor

because he does all the music in his studio and can play every instrument (except the drums) and has gone through much hardship to bring almost 20 years of music to his fans.

Heh, hardship is being high 95% of the time? :p

And he did play the drums in Piggy... sounded good becauce that song was supposed to be messed up sounding (ie piano).

But I have to agree wholeheartly. His music as brought me much peace in troubled times /nasty cliche.

The Mael Brothers, Ron and Russell, aka SPARKS!

These two might as well be one musician because the way their influences synch is something from without time and space as you know it. Check out the outrageously wonderful album, Angst in My Pants, to see what I mean.

He has had some problems. He brought heroin addiction on himself, but alcoholism is a disease, and dealing with both of those at the same time and coming out clean of them is impressive. We almost didn't get With Teeth or any more NIN... Trent nearly died of an overdose a few years ago.

wow, didn't see THAT one coming.

I feel you, though. Highway 61 Revisited ftw.

Oh of course, Bob Dylan is one of the most inspiring artists ever. I saw him in concert a couple years ago. It was just amazing. He doesn't play much guitar anymore though. That saddened me. But he's awesome on the piano.

Cmon 3 pages and nobody has mentioned the greatest solo artist ever, BOWIE!!

David Bowie, the shape shifter, whether its glitter, ambient, japenese, or R&B Bowie got it down. Ziggy is amazing, Hunky Dory is Amazing, Low is the one of the top 5 albums ever made IMO. Don't forget heroes, station to station, MWSTW, Lodger and Scary Monsters.

Ohh we'll love aladdin sane!

At the mo, Muse. Been listening to the new album more and loving it... check out Invincible, current fav. Or Supermassive Black Hole, their current single (bit different from their other stuff, but still cool... funky as). As for older stuff - Bliss and Space Dementia.
