I figured we should have a small thread dedicated to what we percieve to be the best bosses we've encountered in games.

I'll begin, one of my all-time favs is no doubt Sloprano, aka The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day(Called Conker: Live and Reloaded for the XB1 remake)!

The reason is simple, he's a giant turd singing about giant turds whilst tossing them at you.

Now, name one or some of yours!

Psycho Mantis is my favorite boss in any game ever.

Hideo just said **** the 4th wall. Hugely progressive game design.

You mean breaking the fourth wall? If so, yeah, but then again Hideo has been all about breaking the fourth wall since one of his first major games, Snatcher, if you've played it.

I mean, that game felt like 25% of all dialog was dedicated to breaking the fourth wall, got a bit ridiculous really.

Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2.

I can only think of Darth Traya in KOTOR 2, not because the battle was interesting or even fun (it was in fact extremely uninteresting), it's just because I really enjoy the entire situation.
Her wanting you to kill her, as your "final lesson". Well to be honest I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I remember I really liked that story.

ye

It was the reading of the memory card and reciting games I've played that really got me. I don't mean subtle nods to pop culture or the player, which the game almost entirely consists of, this is full on saying things about my personal behavior. I was being judged by an a.i. on my game taste.

IS IT REALLY THAT CHILDISH THAT I LIKE CRASH BANDICOOT, MANTIS? He's a dick IRL.

Baal from D2.

I loved the fact that Baal is the least active of the 3 brothers, not being as smart nor as powerful as the other 2 prime evils, but in the end he arguably turns out to be the most cunning of the 3 by going after the world stone. The fact that he actually had a personality of some sort placed him a notch above Diablo.

This post reminded me of Duriel, by far the most frustrating Diablo II boss battle for me, back when I played through it for the first time. Okay, well, I'm going to put Duriel in my list, one of the only boss battles that managed to truly infuriate me. Good memories.

That's probably the reason I dislike that boss battle; it's far too ostentatious - like everything Kojima does.

I was a kid, but I stand by my goddamn decision. It was a bold move.

Ostentatious people run the world. I'd say he's gotten too afraid, if anything.

UT 99 - Xan Kriegor

So satisfying to beat this punk after the difficulty auto-adjust bumped me up to Godlike.

N-Gin.jpg

Crash - N-gin

Always enjoyed his fights best for some reason, in Crash 2 and 3 anyway.

shadow_colossus_sand.jpg

SotC - That ****in' sand guy

What's that? You want me to wait until this dude jumps out of the sand like a Tremor, shoot the flotation sacks off it's arse so it can't fly, then jump onto it from horseback while it's hovering and carve up it's back? WELL OKAY THEN.

Just off the top of my head.

Omg yes I forgot about the crash bandicoot bosses! Although I hated fighting N-Gin in his space suit.

Ecstatica!

Haven't played it but seen a let's play of it, that game is ****ed up for being so "cartoony"-looking.

I almost asked if WoW counted, but I'll go ahead and say it doesn't so you guys don't give me a huge virtual wedgie and hang me up on a flag pole so everyone can see my shame.

Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2 was pretty memorable for me, even though he doesn't do anything special, but still it was the final boss of a game I was so excited to complete as a kid.

Generally it seems that when I was a kid completing games was really something and took much longer than nowadays for me. So final bosses were memorable, likeWario from Super Mario 2 and the Koopa King (or whatever the name) from Super Mario World.

The bosses in Metal Gear 1 and 2 (and in the series in general, though I only played the PC titles) were pretty creative as well and it was fun fighting them.

The Monkey from Ecstatica

This immediately reminded me of the White Pass map in Bad Company 2, because of the building placement near one of the flags being similar to the one on the screenshot.

I don't have the words to describe his badassery.

Hmmmm......Nearly 15 years of PC Gaming of bosses to choose from. This is gonna be a little tricky, and I may miss one or two that I'll probably get back to, but here are the bosses that left a big impression on me (in no particular order).

1. The Cyberdemon. Probably one of the most memorable bosses in video games. He looked big and bad, and he was real tough to take out too if you didn't have the almighty BFG. It's too bad that they had a lame puzzle to take him out in Doom 3 instead of just duking it out with powerful weapons (I actually used up all of my BFG ammo in Doom 3 when I first came across him).

2. The Shambler. Ok, I'm kinda cheating since this one is more of a Sub-Boss and the actual boss is more of just a lame puzzle (Telefragging a boss? What a lame idea!). But damn it, I just *had* to include this guy. He's more of a "toughest" creature in the game, but being really huge, possessing large scary teeth (and no friggn eyes), huge claws that can rip you apart quickly, and with the ability to shoot lightning from a distance, the Shambler was definitely bad news.

3. Armagon. This end boss was actually from Quake's first Expansion (*sigh* I miss expansions. Too bad these are near extinct no thanks to DLC), Scourge of Armagon. IMHO, *THIS* should have been Quake's endboss. He was a freakish combination of demon and mechanics, and he was quite challenging. And he made some horrifying demon-mechanical sounds.

4. The Serpent Riders. This is more like multiple bosses from Raven's Heretic and both Hexen games. D'Sparil from Heretic, Korax from Hexen, and Eidolon from Hexen 2. Each were challenging, with different abilities. The Serpent Rider that stood out the most for me was Eidolon, especially since he was more of a classical looking demon. I may as well mention Praevus, the evil wizard that tried to fuse the souls of the serpent riders into himself. He was the end boss of the Hexen 2 expansion. Praevus wasn't a Serpent Rider, if course, but he played an important role in not only the Hexen storylines but the Serpent Riders as well. Not only was he challenging, but he was also quite unique looking too.

5. The Makron (from Quake 2). A huge Cybernetic boss that was a pain for me to take down if I didn't have any Items (such as the quad damage) to help me out. And he was large and menacing looking too. The Makron from Quake 4, while I loved his look, I felt that he was too easy to take out.

6. General Raam. Raam was large, tough, and was surrounded by Kryll that not only made him invulnerable but could make short work of you as well. Timing was definitely the key to defeating this Super Locust.

I think I'll leave the list like this for now before it becomes too large of a wall of text. I may add more later if I remember them. But I'd also like to point out that with the games I buy lately most of them don't have a good boss fight. I guess it's because until recently I've been mainly playing Military shooters. Well, more like World War 2 shooters. I can't imagine an end boss for WW2 games, unless it was Mecha Hitler (And that would be super cliche and super silly).

It took me a while to think about these ones. To me most of the memorable moments come from great moments of 'regular' play.

Pierre in NOLF2
Trying to take down a tiny mime assassin riding on a unicycle by being peddled on the handle bars of tricycle powered by everyone's favorite Scott!
I don't think it gets better than this.

Armstrong in NOLF1
The greatest fist fight of all time!

Volkov from NOLF2
Fighting a semi-paralyzed man in an electric wheel chair that shoots rockets is no walk in the park.

Bowser from Super Mario Bro's Wii
This final boss fight felt so incredible epic my first play through.

Kukulkan from Serious Sam: Second Encounter
This boss just keeps betting bigger and badder the more you kill him. Literally.

Heihachi Mishima from tekken 4.

Liquid from mgs4.

Walton Simons from deus ex. Total badass.

Second kotor 2 bosses.

The bosses from jet set radio future. Very fun.

The half-life bosses such as gene worm and the nihilanth.

The rat man leader also z'ant and many more from wizardry 8. Z,ant was cool.

Kiesinger from clive barkers undying. Short but sweet.

Unreal bosses such as titan, skaarj queen and skaarj warlord.

Oh and all bosses from the onimusha series.

I don't have the words to describe his badassery.

I actually came to say this, luckily I looked first.

All of the shadow of the colossus boss fights are fantastic though. Of course that's the whole game... outside of riding a horse around.

Palmer in FF7 was pretty memorable. Only game I can think of where the boss tries to run away and gets hit by a truck :p

Nefarian in WoW before TBC came out was the final boss.

Downing him after weeks of grinding through varying-success in the bosses prior to him, like kiting the boss before him with a hunter's pet to the level below and everyone darts back and forth behind the pillars, was the single greatest moment in my gaming history.

I have never felt such a sense of accomplishment in a game, such a sense of team work, our voicechat went crazy with screams of joy, we had finally done it, we were the 2nd alliance guild to take him down on our server, and we were up there with the best.

The last boss of Bushido Blade 2 is just killing some innocent ****er, it's awesome, gives me a boner

best boss ever

honor is everything

tea ceremony

etc

I can't believe I'm mentioning World of Warcraft in a positive light in two consecutive posts, but its bosses pretty much beat the snot out of anything from any other game.

Ragnaros? **** yeah! Blackwing Lair had a bunch of crazyass fights, and C'thun! Oh my god, C'thun! That shit was mother****ing epic, god damn. Huge eyeball that shoot frickin' laser beams everywhere, tentacles everywhere, and he EATS YOU. And yes, all of these guys took FORTY coordinated people to bring down, back when WoW was a party and not a job (hey I get one jab).

C'thun, disregarding that WoW is an MMO even, is quite the boss fight. It's just well designed and immersive as shitballs

The tentacle and the garg from the first Half Life.

The ogres from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

The three generals from Just Cause 2.

GLaDOS!

GLaDOS_Far.jpg

Also Solidus Snake from MGS 2 but not really gameplay-wise, I liked his monologue.

LOL at The End's LL Bean boots.

1) Gannon from Super Mario Bros 3. My hands were sweaty, my face was hot, my hands were hurting, and as a child defeating him meant the world to me. I can't seem to find the video with him

2) Onyxia in WoW one of the hardest fights in an MMO and so many wipes before we killed her.

can't think of any more right now
