Yeah, that's why she says her real name... because she's ashamed. :rolleyes: She mentions it on talk shows, Inside the Actors Studio, and even used it in one of the other parts of that same episode of SNL as her character's name. If you didn't know, Portman is also a family name. I think it was her grandmother's last name.

... and who can blame them for not wanting her to use her real name in The Professional (a love story between a hitman and a young child)? It's a movie involving pedophilia. That, also, was touched on in a joke in the SNL monologue. Chris Parnell (in a Q&A segment) asks about The Professional, she says something like "You know, I was actually 11 when I made that movie," and he responds by lustfully saying, "Uh... yes, I do know that. My question is: do you still have any of your wardrobe from that movie... and, if so, would you be willing to sell it?"

Beyond that, stage names are very common. Jon Stewart is Jonathan Stewart Liebowitz. Nicholas Cage is Nicholas Coppola. Michael Caine is Maurice J. Micklewhite. David Bowie is David Robert Hayward-Jones. Tom Cruise is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Mel Brooks is Melvin Kaminsky. Billy Idol is William Board. Sophia Loren is Sophia Scicoloni. Marilyn Monroe was Norma Jean Mortensen. Chuck Norris is Carlos Ray Norris. Jane Seymour is Joyce Frankenberg. Christopher Walken's real first name is Ronald. Sigourney Weaver's real first name is Susan. The list goes on... and on... and on...
