Space Cowboy said:Waltzing Matilda is a good song but I think most people feel that the subject matter is a bit weak to have as our national anthem. I mean it is essentially about an unwashed homeless guy stealing a sheep then committing suicide when the authorities catch him.
Space Cowboy said:Edit: to add to that little glossary of yours a "matilda" is actually a swag...oh wait in the middle of writing this I realise I have to define swag as well. OK a swag is basically a bag tied to the end of a stick that you carry over your shoulder.
wow .. they actually allow that in the anthem? The turkish gov't has historically been very hardline atheist/anti-religion since about 1924.Freedom is the right of my nation who worships God and seeks what is right.

It is important to note that since the second World War the German national anthem has been shortened and now just consists of the Third Stanze. This is because the first, second, and forth stanza were thought of (in Germany--by the Germans) to sound too suprematory which is one of the problems that led them into World War II. Germans disregard the old stanzas and it is considered disrespectful if you sing
it.
First stanza
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt,
wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
von der Etsch bis an den Belt,
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt! :|
Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world,
if it always holds together brotherly
for protection and defense.
From the Meuse to the Neman,
from the Adige to the Belt,
|: Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world. :|
Second stanza
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
sollen in der Welt behalten
ihren alten schönen Klang,
uns zu edler Tat begeistern
unser ganzes Leben lang.
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang! :|
German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German songs
shall continue to be held in high
esteem all over the world,
and inspire us to noble deeds
all our lives.
|: German women, german faithfulness,
german wine and german songs! :|
Third stanza, FRG anthem
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach laßt uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|
Unity and justice and freedom
for the German fatherland;
This let us all pursue,
brotherly with heart and hand.
Unity and justice and freedom
are the pledge of happiness.
|: Flourish in this blessing's glory,
flourish, German fatherland. :|
Fourth stanza (1921)
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
Und im Unglück nun erst recht.
Nur im Unglück kann die Liebe
Zeigen ob sie stark und echt.
Und so soll es weiterklingen
Von Geschlechte zu Geschlecht:
|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles
Und im Unglück nun erst recht. :|
Germany, Germany above all,
and during disaster more than ever,
only in disaster can love
show whether it's strong and true;
And so shall the song continue
from generation to generation
|: Germany, Germany above all,
and during disaster more than ever.:|

lol actually, the gov't is definitely not atheist or anti-religion. but they've been one of the few TRULY secular countries in the world since early 20's (lyrics were written in '21). they're not anti-religious, i mean c'mon, Turkey is ~99.8% muslim, but they understand that a good government cannot favor a religion, if the country has freedom of religion. so they outlaw all religious based things(clothing for example) in parliament. women in parliament cannot wear shawls and cover their head etc. there was a conservative islamist political party that got elected, but thankfully EVERYONE in Turkey listens to the military, and the generals are really anti-Islamo-fascisthasan said:wow .. they actually allow that in the anthem? dude thats the Nazi theme the offical song aint like that where the fick did u get thet from? from reichslieder.com
Sorry dude, you don't understand muslims. that's not true. The gov't is anti-islamic. you yourself said:i mean c'mon, Turkey is ~99.8% muslim, but they understand that a good government cannot favor a religion
Guess why? everybody wants Islam.there was a conservative islamist political party that got elected
There you go, you just proved my point.EVERYONE in Turkey listens to the military, and the generals are really anti-Islamo-fascist
secular = I don't care about your religion.gov't is definitely not atheist or anti-religion. but they've been one of the few TRULY secular countries in the world
That makes no sense at all. If they have religous freedoms then they can't outlaw any religous practice, as that is the exact opposite of religous freedom.the country has freedom of religion. so they outlaw all religious based things

but there is one thing wrong: it's not that people listen to the miliary, it's just that the military has great power over the politics. can knock out any gov't they don't like.
hasan said:secular = I don't care about your religion.
athiest/anti-religous = I'm not gonna let you practice you're religion.
America is secular, so is britin and most of the west.
The soviet union was athiest, France is going more in the direction of anti-religiousness. Turkey is definitly anti-religous.

no I don't what do you mean 'sorta turckish'?i am sorta turkish you know.
This is not the first time Islamists are elected into the government, and I think the military always was there to over throw them when they felt like it.the hardliners were elected because of their policies(anti-kurdish etc), not because of their hardcore religious views.
They don't allow women wearing hijab into the government. and what else? do they allow them in schools? (not sure about this one), do they allow them to work (not sure either).Turkey has freedom for all religions dude. they are SECULAR. they allow all religions to be practiced there.
maybeTurks are vastly different. i think i understand Turks quite well. trust me on this
