Ok.. So here we go. I live about 2 floors above my router. Can't move the router nor can you move my computer. Its an old, crappy Netgear MR814v2.. My wireless card is a Belkin 54MB.
My connections are fine. I download fine. I play games fine, but when I play games with AIM or XFire running... BAM! Everything but the game disconnects. It is like my bandwith is just going straight towards that game and forgets about supplying internet to the other programs.

Please suggest best wireless router with the BEST bandwith regulation. Please help.. I am about to kill the internet!

CANNOT MOVE MODEM OR ROUTER. I AM STUCK IN THIS AREA AND SO IS THE MODEM/ROUTER.

Wireless = suck. get a good wired router and get some cat5 goin through your walls for the best possible pron download speed.

To get the best signal you are probably best getting the same brand for card and router. Especially when you start looking to the better routers away from the standard 54G. Ever looked into MIMO routers?

If you live two floors above your router, why not try a wireless access point/range extender between the two floors?

I just recently got the Linksys WRT54GS and it's very nice.
As long as you get version 1.0 - 2.0 then you can throw some 3rd Party firmware on it and boost your signal strength.

Also, if you get a "SpeedBooster" wireless card along with the "SpeedBooster" router, it dose actually give you a performance increase.

I still keep my computer wired to it, but we have 2 other computers that access through the wireless and they connect almost instantly and have Excellent signal strength w/ a soild 54mbit all around the house and even back in the garage.

However, if you do get Wireless, make sure you use WPA and not WEP for security.

Also, those routers that claim to get 108mbit don't hit that speed very well, since they usualy just do it thhrough frame bursts and compression. So your not actually getting 108mbit. If you really want to go higher than 54Mbit (which is more than enough for any internet connection), then you should wait for the new 802.11n standard to come out, which should be this year or next. 802.11n's will be breaking the 200mbit barrier.

Belkin says theirs hits 125mbps. Always makes me chuckle.

I'd say go for a linksys, I've had problems with d-link. Anyways, get the linksys, then get the 7dbi signal boosters for it and you should be "Taco Bell - Good to go" Or get go straight wired. It's 2006, go with CAT6 cable, that's what'd I'd do. CAT5E at the minimum :D

About 8 of us have made completely valid recommendations that do not involve moving the position of your modem or router...

Well, not many people are going to be running a giganet, even in 2006.
And I havent really seen any vanilla Cat5 around for awhile, most everyone sells Cat5E now.
