i know that this should be in the hardware section but i don't think i would get enough help quickly.

my computer keeps rebooting whenever i go into a game like HL2 or Warcraft3.

and it reboots randomly also.

no viruses have been detected.

and i get this error message somtimes.

Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078)

has your motherboard come in contact with any linens or clothes lately?

seroiusly though, what are your CPU and case Temperatures

Aye, sounds like an overheating problem.

Also, try if just sitting in windows then firing up tonnes of IE windows. If its overheating that can also cause it to crash.

Potentially, if its an ABIT (Other makes as well to be honest), you might also have "Bad Caps".

http://www.badcaps.com/ that explains it on the front page, I had bad caps on me last mobo :(

Heres a quick list that they give you that can help quickly identify if your motherboard has got it.
System Faults:
Motherboard fails to POST.
Memory Test Fails.
System randomly and/or constantly reboots itself.
Fails to fully boot (or even install) Operating System.
System randomly and frequently freezes.
Random & frequent 'Blue Screens of Death'
BSoD or hard freeze under heavy drive activity (Either RAID, SCSI, or standard ATA)
CPU temps abnormally higher than usual under typical or less load.
*CPU VCORE & other system voltages are erratic or far out of tolerances.
Resetting the system after a freeze and the system will not repost.
(You have to completely power down then power back up.)

That last one there is something i suffered from for ages but never realy cared to look into it :)

no i think.

has your motherboard come in contact with any linens or clothes lately?

not likely.

edit: also, how do you know your temp without going into bios settings?

How dusty is your motherboard?
My old computer blew up on me. I opened up the case and shook it and a dust ball the size of my fist fell out.

a lot....

so, i should un-dust it?

Well having dust act as a conductor between motherboard wirings isn't cool. You could try to dust it but be very careful.

Use compressed "air" if you can get any (its actually a gaseous chemical cocktail, but w/e) :)

DO NOT blow on it.
You'll spit tiny bits of saliva on the board. It doesn't end well. Trust me I know. :(

thanks people

blink + orcone101: um, can i use a vacum cleaner instead? or a broom?

and anyone know how to get the temp without using BIOS setup?

edit: oh, thats why my last computer broke........

i blew on it and hit it with a blunt object many times.........

and it didn't even turn on..........

How old is your computer? Half-Life 2 and Warcraft 3 are pretty intense on your computer in terms of heat production, so I'm guessing the dust could be preventing the board from cooling down.
Broom no, but vacuum cleaner on low will work.

a year,

ok, i will try vacuming.

oh, and uh..... my 2nd computer kept rebooting, so i put ice on it (in a ziplock bag) and uh..... it sped up...... and was completely irreversly destroyed by the water. so i wont put ice on it.

and my second question: how do you get your system temp? (while not in BIOS setup)

thanks for all the help people. i appreciate it.

Mate dont vacume it! You rub that thing on the carpet which builds up shit loads of static. Not a computers best friend.

Take it to bits and clean it properly, unscrew the fans and that, get rid of all the crap.

ok, i wont. good thing i just read this. i was about to vacume it.

seconded. A lot of vacs have a nasty habit of being charged with static. Compressor tubes sometimes aswell. Depending on the type. I used one I had for my airbrush once, only had a small piece of metal on the end but it sparked like a bad HL1 effect when it came into contact with the case.. so im glad it didnt touch the insides. I think it was the material used for the tubing that was to blame, nylon or something synthetic.

Best bet is to do it by hand, slowly bit by bit, taking the fans out and cleaning through them, cleaning out the heatsink, trying to get as much dust and fluff out as you can.

Use q-tips and compressed air, that will do the job. Make sure you take it apart fully, give it a really thorough clean inside and then put it back together properly, making sure to clean the heatsinks and the fans, especially on the graphics card.

um, i may sound stupid, but whats a heatsink?

thanks

Its the lump of metal that a fan blows on.

I had this problem, restarting when playing games. It was because there were big clumps of dust between the graphics card heatsink and fan. I have a feeling this is what ure problem is. I just pulled them out and it was fine.

If you have a geforce you can see the graphics card temp in the advanced settings. theres a bit called "Temperature Settings" mine is 62 degrees C right now.

It could also be a crapped out fan on something. I had a problem with a busted power supply fan, but it restarted even when idle, not just games.

If its a processor problem I'm pretty sure you'll hear an alarm beeping before a shutdown or restart.

thanks everyone!

i think the gd may be overheating. i will clean it after i get back from school.

thanks for the file. i been searching for ages.

I gave you the idea that your computer might be overheating due to the dust inside it like ages ago.
How often should you clean your computer?

Does anyone know of a temperature sensing program for shuttles? I've got a new skt 939 shuttle... and would like to know what temp it gets up to. I've had random reboots during games, well, not reboots... but lack of signal to monitor and i've had to shut down and reboot to bring the pc back.

never.

just did though............ 34C and 32C for temp.

sensor #3 using MBM5 turned up 128C degrees... :flame:

and i will run hl2 now to see if it reboots.

i turned hl2 on, i selected new game, it loaded fully, then, *REBOOT!!!!!!!*

f----- computer....

perhaps i should clean the graphics card more throughly....

i just cleaned it as fast as i could.. not very thourghly.

Umm...

Are you absolutely sure it's a hardware problem? Since the BSOD error says, "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER", it could be an improper (un)install of your new/old video card drivers.

Have you installed any new video card drivers recently?

not recently, but i did update my nvidia nv36 drivers (by clicking the update button) and it didn't work well, so i rollbacked it.

i'm frustrated....

;(

I'd clean it out first, *pulls out 135psi compressed tank* LETS DO THIS! ;)

Thats what I do, and its nice and not dusty after I'm done :p

did it.....

doesn't work.

edit: i can't seem to be able to take the fans apart........

ok, nothing works.

cleaning: no
updating: no
clearing the threads stuck in my sewing machine: no
punching the computer: a bit
yelling at it: no
using it while having the case open: well a bit....

;(

edit: problem (kinda) solved! : run with windows wide open, and case open keeping the cpu temp/graphics temp down.

I had the restarting problem after I installed new mobo drivers. The only thing I could manage to do was knock off 500 mhz from the clock speed :( It wouldn't even work if i rolled back drivers or cleaned out my case and everything.

Do you have case fans?

yes.

and i did search the microsoft website but it didn't help.

only thing that works is to run with my case open.....

but hl2 still doesn't work. :(
