i have been playing alternative hard rock for the past 1 year. now i got called up for an 'audition' to play in a heavy metal band. the style they are looking for is like Children of Bodom, As I Lay Dying, In Flames, and Mudvayne. i know it sounds ridiculous for a high school band to sound like them....the only thing i have played that is near heavy metal is Metallica. where do i start?

Well I guess you could start with the bands your freinds are trying to sound like or whatever. Check out these songs:

In Flames - Food for the Gods, The Hive, Colony, The Jester Race
As I Lay Dying - 94 Hours, Collision, The Long March
Children of Bodom - Bodom After Midnight, Needled 24/7, Deadnight Warrior
Mudvayne - Happy?, Dig ... and thats all the Mudvayne I know.

electric guitar. the thing is that i listen to metal alot, but my style of playing has always been alternative. like i said b4, where do i start in practising metal style?

Practice your shredding.

Plus, Mudvayne is nu-metal and As I Lay Dying is kind of Screamo, I wouldn't call them heavy metal.

Children of Bodom is alright, but I seem to find their screaming destroys their musicianship.

But thats just my opinion. If you want to learn to play like this, download some guitar tabs.

Mudvayne is an odd one to throw in that list...hmm...

Sounds like a cool band...I have wanted to have a band of some of those influences!

Problem solved!
My roommates had one of these, and it was always funny. Check the 'metal' names of the frequencies.

I have one of those right next to me. :dork:

It's alright, but creates a ton of feedback.

Dude, this is the best stompbox you can get

http://line6.com/tonecore/uberMetal.html

I have one and i absolutely love it.

Oh and by the way, try:

In Flames - Behind Space
In Flames - Jotun
In Flames - Pinball Map
Children of Bodom - Silent Night, Bodom Night

i watched Spinal Tap and i thought it was hilarious. the pedal im using is a cheap pedal called Fab Metal, and i dun wanna invest lots of money to gears. anyway, i have been looking at the tabs and trying to study them. i dun have my guitar right now cuz im on vacation. im using a Crate 15 watt amp. my configuration is like Low - turn up to full, Mid - Zero, and High- Full, and my pedal is Tone - at the middle, Gain - full, and Level - like 1 tenth. is that alright?

i have nearly 3 years experience, just over 1 year of playing alternative. my first year was on the acoustic. im gonna talk to the band and suggest an alternative rock genre, but heavier.

All the songs listed are good ones to pick up on, but you are not going to be playing most of that with one year of guitar experience. I've been playing longer than you and still have plenty of trouble even with some Metallica stuff. Don't expect to do anything very technical and fast anytime soon, because you will have tons of trouble doing that kind of stuff until you get more experienced.

I've been playing for a year and I can play anything by Metallica and plenty of Dream Theater.

The key is to practice 4 hours a day!

No offense, but you need to practice more. I've been playing for 8 months and I can play all of the songs listed just fine.

You want a way into metal? You NEED to learn DEATH BLOOMS by Mudvayne. VERY EASY, it's straight up math metal, and it was the first song I learned. It sounds impressive to play, and it's quite simple.

Go learn it. Great song. And like I said, easy to play and impressive.

One thing I have been taught is to learn how to play fast, you must learn how to play slow...

Seriously - take songs slowly instead of trying to rip through them at the start...Your technique will be better and your mind learns better apparently.

depending on what kind of heavy metal you're looking for, check into Dream Theaters album Train of Thought.

Heh, *cue flames* The only good band in that list is Children of Bodom, so study their music. If you can get up to their speed, you'll be the coolest kid in your school.

So that said, good luck with that. Best bet, look up their tabs and listen while you try to play along...

Hmmm, maybe start with:

Bed of Razors, it's a repetive melody for lead guitar, and it's slower than normal... so try that.
Lake Bodom has an easier lead intro as well, you might try that.

Now, if you want to do RHYTHMN, then it's all a bit easier. Just go to www.wholenote.com and look at the Metal section. That's where I'd start for everything.

Usually how I do metal is to do a lot of palm muting, switching in between off and on muting, and rolling riffs, like the galloping riff. Also they use a lot of harmonics, so learn how to do those right... hammer ons and pull offs, also essential. The best way to learn is get help from someone who does. Walk in to a guitar store and look for guys who are really good at it and ask if they can show you some tips.

Oh, and scales. LEARN YOUR FRICKING SCALES. If you can do that, you can intersperse power chords and single notes to make some neat riffs. Scales are the foundation, so learn them well.

If you want, I can record some simple "metaling" for you. I can hook my amp up to my box and record my stuff. I'm not that amazing but I can do simpler things. Just PM me.

I can play most of the As I am solo.

The songs on that album are so fun to play.

Well I also like to play metal on my guitar so I can relate! Power chords are everything...once you learn those...your good. But I'm stuck trying to master palm muting.

and I'm workin on the Ruiner solo on my guitar..its not as hard as I thought it would be

You have a long, long way to go.

Well I'm trying at least. lol. and learning.

My dad just got the fretboard logic set of books I'm working on them now, learning about scales and chords stuff like that

I was mostly referring to lead work and fills. I doubt that you can play most of those songs straight through, including the lead guitar, perfectly, 100% of the time. The majority of metal rhythm is easy as hell, and if you do nothing but practice a few songs over and over for days on end, then I suppose there's nothing stopping you, but in my mind there are more important things than simply knowing how to play songs.

I honestly don't care what you were referring to. And I certainly don't give a shit if you "doubt" that I can play most of those songs straight through. The fact of the matter is, I can. I'm sorry you feel the need to lash out at me, because you're not an accomplished guitar player. But by all means, feel free to shut the hell up.

And for the record, sir, I could never, in a million years, call somebody who has been playing less than ten years an "accomplished guitar player." Forgive me for being skeptical, but whenever I see someone who has been playing for eight months try to do something outside of the songs they know, they fail, miserably. Sure, you may be a better guitarist than me; I don't admit it's impossible, but I also find it unlikely that you are the amazing musician you seem to make yourself out to be. Save your flames for when they're actually called for in the first place.

I meant no flames. Nor did I intend to make myself out to be a great guitar player. I can play those riffs, yes. But as you said, I don't think I could come up with anything on my own just yet. I never could afford lessons, so all I'm left with is a plethora of guitar tabs to try and learn off of. But I disagree with you on the ten years thing. I've got a close friend that's only been playing for 3 years, and honest to god he's the best guitar player I've ever seen and or met in my life. He puts Jimi Hendrix to shame. It really is amazing...

No flaming intended. =)

What's wrong with covering songs by other bands? That is how people learn. i guess that is the reason you needed more time playing metal. Seriously, who gives a f*** bout playing a song without mistakes? No one is perfect. I got friends who played the guitar for less than 3 years and they are already playing Children of Bodom songs flawlessly. How do you explain that?

Anyway, i got into the band and my friend said that we could play covers from the bands listed and adding the Scorpions, which is really cool cuz Scorpions are one of my favourite bands. im working on speed right now. My guitar teacher is guiding me along so it's all good.

Thx for your help, especially the links...They helped alot. Those are what I asked, not a comment from a dumbass...
