Need help using HL2 w/o fast internet connection

I've got the cure for you.

Buy an xbox.

Or because you have free dial up, leave your PC on overnight. I dunno how long only half life 2 would take but it only took me about 10-20 minutes to update on 512k broadband.

Cmon now, that would be inconviencing him! :rolleyes:

broadband is good for so MUCH more than just a couple of patches a year!

you should know the benefits from your works connection..websites load faster,EVERYTHING internet is faster...

let me guess, you have an unlimited supply of those damned aohell free 45 day discs..otherwise explain your free dial-up..

HL2 nowhere near the game that FarCrap is? damn!! you must of smoked something I wouldn't touch!!

FarCry is sooo last gen!(joke) seriously though,the story sucked, the characters sucked, the AI wasn't too bad though and the water was pretty, but overall it was "just another FPS"..to me at least..

either way, :cheers:

But see, there again your're using YOUR personal situation and looking at my perspective as tho it should be the same. I rarely even use internet at home except for things that are plenty fast for me. I have DSL at work and it displays web pages a tad faster, but not even enough to matter in the slightest. I just don't need BB ! You do obviously, bit I don't.

God no ! I'd pay b4 i went thru that kind of trouble. There are a few free ISP's left, some like one of the ones i use are only available in a given state which is why they aren't widly known. One at least that it 100% dead free and with absolutly no catches other than occasional long startup times due to busy signals. And if that happens i also have juno which gives you 10 hours a month, which itself is usually more than enough. And theres not necassarily a banner on juno if you get my drift. ;)

As for FC, thats very subjective. For every person like yourself theres another who prefers FC. I asked extensivly at various forums b4 i bought HL2 and thats the response i got.....about 50/50. I happen to like it far more than any game i've ever played.

ok..not just "MY personal situation".. there are many more than just me that feel this way even though we might do totally different things with the internet...

yeah I am a bad boy...long live the Mule!!!

I've been on broadband for a little over a year now and refuse to go back..

but hey if you are happy then thats the important thing!!

:cheers:

Now there ya go......it's just that simple !Now if that could be known BEFORE a person posts, it would make for much shorter and more usful threads and answers. :cheers: (this could be a great idea for a sig:))

No it wouldn't, steam says broadband recommend no matter what. What do you think they mean by that??? :rolleyes: Obviously the files will be bigger than 100kb.

EDIT:SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

* Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
* 64 MB RAM
* 400 Mhz processor
* 1GB HD space (recommended)
* Internet connection (broadband connection recommended)

You misunderstood what i was saying....it wasn't referring to that at all. I was referring to the notion that if it were understood that i don't need or want broadband at home in the initial post, we wouldn't be having this long dialog about something thats pointless. It should have ended the second i said i don't need or want it, but somehow no one seemed to want to read that part. :upstare:

And by the way, when you order online theres nothing telling you that w/o broadband you may end up spending forever downloading. And on the box itself it doesn't say anything about that either. It just says "internet connection" under the requirments. And it's irrelievnt whether or not steam tells you this because you won't see that till AFTER you bought the game ! Not to mention it gives further creedence to my argument that they should tell you this before you buy because they onbiously know it's an iomportant factor if they tell you that in steam. But why do you think they don't tell you till after you buy it? I think you know as well as i do the answer to that, which is my big beef with them. Anyway, this whole debate is pointless so lets just end it.

Yea, i did the brick/see saw thing because it was in the walkthru. Thats not where i'm describing at all. I would assume the game would be designed so that there are no areas you could end up in that have no way out. But still for the life of me i could not find a way out of that sewer chamber.
Where is that? Is that where the helicopter is above you? If so there is a blue door on the left side you have to go through. If you are farther than that then explain it more.

yea, it's a ways past that. It's where you enter this room in the sewer and you're attacked by a ton of manhacks and there are a bunch of explosive barrels. Theres a ladded that goes from some water up to a higher level with a mesh floor and theres another room thru a short hall which also has a ladder and water on the bottom and a wall of what look like jail cell bars with no way thru. I'd be happy as a barnacle, er, i mean clam, if i could find the answer before i leave work today ! I'll start playing when i get home and i'd like to be able to get past that since i've already spent a 1/2 hour in there. I'm dying to get to the good stuff but i just can't seem to find any way out of this one darn room. Probably something simple i'm missing.

In the room off of the Barrel room, climb down the pipe or whatever it is in the middle - there is a valve you have to turn. This makes the water rise in the sewer. Return to the Barrel room, fight the 'hacks. Then, swim down where the ladder is in the centre of the room and through into the next area. Solve the jumping/water physics puzzle there (remove the wooden planks holding the debris under the water, then surface and jump across). Play on.

Out the sewer pipe at the bottom of the barrel room? Is that where i go out? Thats where i was trying to before but couldn't get up there. I never thought of flooding it even tho theres a scenario like that in FC. I'll give it a go tonite. Thanks !

I've been in there another 45 min. I'm still stuck. the puzzle you speak of as far as i can tell is to break the boards then try and jump up on one of the boxes that rises to the surface to get up on that walkway. But i haven't been able to do that. I'll try another 1/2 hour before i blow it off.

try to duck-jump to get onto the walkway. you don't need to jump at all to get on the cable holders, just look up and towards them and swim.

Your strategy is correct. As Wolf says, try hitting crouch/duck after jumping, it gives you essential height. I think that is the one bit of gameplay that carried over from HL1 which may not have been made very obvious to newcomers in HL2...

Persevere! HL2 rules, I hope you come to like it. Although if you haven't liked the opening so far then it doesn't bode well ;(

i decided to look for a spoiler first and found one that said to use the cable drums. it worked. I don't think this game is my cup of tea tho. usually by this point i'm having fun. But this game seems to get more and more like a big puzzle than a FPS. And the worse part is before i can figure anything out i run out of ammo and get nailed. So i think i'm gonna look for a infinate ammo cheat so i don't have to replay scenes over and over.

Keep an eye out for lambda symbols spraypainted around - they look kind of like little h's, basically the HL symbol. These are a resistance symbol and indicate stashes of ammo and health nearby. The game is actually pretty generous with ammo overall - lots of people tell stories of getting to the end having saved up all their best stuff out of paranoia, when actually they could have used and replenished it many times.

Those bits you just came through are probably the most puzzle-y bits for a long time. HL2 really is simple FPS for the most part. I would recommend not using cheats...the sense of danger, survival and atmos is a big part of the charm. But each to his own, different strokes different folks,etc etc.

Its really not, its the most interactive fps and beautiful game. If you gave it a chance rather than convincing yourself 'ahhh its not the game as farcry' well its not meant to be, HL1 was out well before, and been setting the standard. They are totally different fps's.

You don't sound like much of an fps player at all. You really should get your head down and play properlly rather than getting us to hold your hand. Have you got the gravity gun yet? How about fought gunships? Used antlions as attacking combine weapons? Crossbowed a combine to a wall? Taken down a strider with a rpg? Many of those things you won't have done, and are some of the most memorable moments. Open up your mind for a second and enjoy the game. There are the occassional puzzle, but my god kids play this game and solve them they are so extremely basic. Don't think too complicated, think simple, fps puzzles have never been hard.

Lastly if you want ammo, open the console and put in sv_cheats 1. With cheat mode on, type in 'impulse 101' to give all weapons, but then you ruin the moments you get all the guns as you progress through the game. 'god' is god mode if you really suck that badly. Thats all, but tread carefully brother for these are harrowed grounds.

I am getting the hang of the puzzle aspect. When i got to that gate in the air boat i figured out i had to go thru those rooms to finally get to a barrel to blow up which swings this cable down with something attached the breaks the gate open so i can get thru with the airboat. That would have had me stumped for hours last nite. It's not a bad game, i'm not saying that. It's just not exactly what i'd have prefered. Different people, different tastes. But that said i like it better than a lot of games i've tried. i just happen to like FC so much that it has sort of set a standard in my mind as to what i like and now everything else seems to pale by comparison. But had i not bought FC i might be drooling over HL2 right now. Really it's mainly the puzzle aspect that bothers me because it causes me to get stuck in one area for long periods just staring at things trying to figure it out. And to me thats just not real fun. But again, thats getting easier. Took me quite a while tho to figure out i have to put those barrels under that see saw type ramp to get it in the air so i could jump the air boat over it. (around the corner from the barn where the civilian dro or so hour there.
As for the guns and ammo, i did see the same cheat you mentioned and used it. I do get the whole idea of having to pickup ammo and guns just as it is in FC and UT and most others. It makes sense and can be a fun way to do it. But i typically prefer having all the guns and ammo i want because i find a big part of the fun is using my preferred 2-4 weapons and always having enough ammo for them. but that cheat isn't infinate in ammo so you have to keep going to the console if you run out and van't pickup any more. But i do agree it's pretty generous as ammo goes because i've only had to go back to the console once so far.

Hey, it's not a bad game. But i'm just here because i needed help while many or most of you are probably here because this is one of if not your favorite game. Hence the differing opinions.
