Pmods.net have conducted an interview with the team working on the upcoming Half-Life 2 Modification, Neotokyo. In this interview are some tidbits and information on the mod, such as the number of game types and whether vehicles will be included in the game (Which is a no at this point in time).
[Pmods]Wraxe : Will the mod be arcade like CS:S or realistic (two bullets and you die for example) ? [br]
[NT]pushBAK : NEOTOKYO will be a very deadly environment.. you don't want to be shot at all if you can help it. We would like to make a game where people were careful and think about where they move, and how to outflank/outthink the other team…

[br]Neotokyo is beginning to take shape and is looking mighty sexy as the team enters its mapping phase. You can read the whole interview over at Pmods.net. Also, more information can be found at Neotokyo’s teaser site.

And since when is CS:S considered arcade? Quake 3, UT is arcade, but CS:S?

I remember the times when it was considered "realistic".

Hi,

I'm the webmaster of PMods.net and wanted to let you know that PMods.net is our name and not PSMods.net.
Thank you for making the changes in your news... :D

There was never a time CS:S was considered realistic. You're thinking of CS, (somewhere between CS 1.5 and 1.7 - up until 1.3 you could bunny-hop and crouch-jumping with the Benelli was an insta-headshotkill). The first time I went on CS:S I was like: "Ah this is probably because it's only the ATI nubs". Then I didn't play any games in 6 months and came back. I played on lots of different servers, but it was still like shooting fish in a barrel.

If NeoTokyo looks like that, and plays how they want it to. I'd play it over CS:S any day of the week.

Actually, I don't see a difference between cs 1.6 and cs:s in terms of realism. And there is no cs 1.7.

Ah my mistake. I stopped playing CS for ages and played a 2v2 LAN in France a few months back.

The dirrerence I'd describe is that in CS 1.6* you still have to aim for the head. In CS:S it's ridiculously easy and you might as well call a 'headshot' an 'upper body shot'. It's also a lot easier to control the recoil in CS:S IMO.

haha such bullshit ^^
ignore the preceding post for its stupidity

Care to answer me this question, john3571000:

Why is there only one pro-gamer competition where CS:S is played, compared to the hundreds of pro-gamer events that play CS 1.6?

It may be the 6+ years cs has been around. Just a thought.

Because

1. Not everyone can afford CSS
2. Not everyone can run CSS to their satisfaction
3. CS is much older

The only real difference between CSS and CS is the players, there are a lot more noobs in CSS. There is aboslutely no difference in how realistic or not it is.

In your country maybe.

Granted, CS is free compared to CS:S actually costing something so that would naturally mean a smaller player base for CS:S. But if you claim there's no difference apart from age of the mod, surely all pro-gamers (the ones with money who game for a living) wouldn't have any problems with spending the money and playing a graphically superior game. It's true that CS is less demanding on the connection but most comps are LAN so that doesn't make a lot of difference.

Therefore the only reason I can see for pro events not using CS:S is that the Source engine reincarnation is too damn easy. The difference in terms of aiming between an great player and a pro-gamer are greatly reduced because shots land so much more easily. When I played CS:S I found I was getting headshot kills when I wasn't even aiming for them, whereas in CS 1.6 I would have been brutally punished for such laziness, such a lack of focus on my game.

[On Topic]

Megatokyo looks like it has a great team behind it, and that interview is actually quite an interesting read. As the team tells you why they made certain decisions on gameplay and esthetic aspects, their answers really show you that they've put a lot of thought into this game. They appear not to just be going with the grain but making logical choices based upon how they will affect the inegral setting of the game.

I'll translate some more when I get back today.

I commend the Neotokyo team the amount of effort they have put into their mod in terms of the visual style, it really is quite something breathetaking to behold. I just hope that the gameplay lives up to the appearance, it would be a great shame if falls down in that department.

@ -Crispy- : oui c'est un site français ... donc bon ;)
Also, the interview is in English and has been translated in french ... you don't need to translate it ;)

I was only complaining because this site is for an English-speaking audience (not neccessarily British, Australian or American, but those able to speak English), so it seemed a bit odd that we were linked to an interview in French.

If you could link to the original source text I'm sure we'd all be very grateful, (me partly because I'm interested in seeing how well I translated :p).

mmmmm, damn, i can't get over how great those screens look, and its been a solid team for a long time, but instead of waiting on hl2, they made a mod for ut2k4 or something i think. thats the bomb. most mod teams during the delay just sat there in awe of valve worship, while neotokyo produced. well i could be wrong, my memory is kinda wack from all those experiiments under the sink, but im pretty sure.

Reading over the text in French there are some errors in translation. I made some silly ones in my translation, too.

For instance: "I see a few new modern buildings yeah, but they're next to buildings that have been around for 50-100 years"

Would translate into French as:
"J'ai vu des nouveaux immeubles bien sur, mais ils se trouvent a cote des immeubles d'il y a 50-100 ans"
not:
"J'ai vu des nouveau immeubles bien sur, mais ils se basent sur les immeubles d'il y a 50-100 ans"

'se baser' means to 'be based on' so I made errors in my reverse translation. Ah it's just like Chinese Whispers!

But in general a good translation. It's nice that people take the effort to let non-English speakers know the details of whats going on in the world of Modding when so many Mods only publish updates in English.

Thx Grey for the link ;)

With PMods, we try to "educate" the french gaming comunity. Most of them don't speak well or at all english. They "need" us, in order to know what's going on.
And we are having more and more people coming on PMods ... so I guess we're doing a good job ;)
