network adapter question, please help

can you guys tell me what makes a network adapter(the pci slot network things) good?

Do you mean good features to have?? If you are after wireless then 802.11g is the way to go, then hardware firewalls are also a useful feature to have, gigabit LAN is also good compared to 10/100 LAN.
Good brands of network equipment to look out for include Netgear, Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and SMC.
