A few general questions:

1) How accessible is it to new people? Will I find myself killed every two seconds like it was when I first played CS?
2) Will it be possible to hide from people? On CS I was always wishing that people wouldn't know the level layout well enough so that I could hide if someone was coming.
3) What is gun aiming like? i.e. is it easier or harder then CS?

A few personal things I'd like to do but won't matter if I can't.
1) Can I attatch mines and explosives to the underside of vehicles then drive it into the centre of the enemies and blow it up?
2) Will vehicles explode it dropped from a high enough altitude and is there an aircraft large enough to pick them up?
3) How visible is a parachute? Will I for example be able to parachute on top of a building, then from there jump down onto a moving tank and start shooting the hell out of it?
4) Is it possible to stand on top of moving vehicles?

The learning curve will be pretty high at first, as it is a whole new game, but you will get use to it fast.

The maps will be much bigger and there will always be spots people don't know about or don't think to look.

I am guessing it is similar to CS, but a bit easier. There will be iron sights in the game, that will make things a bit harder to hit people, but if you are good with them it should make it easier than CS.

Yes

They will explode, but no aircraft can pick them up.

You can parachute right before you hit the ground and take no damage, so it doesn't really matter how visible your parachut is, you could do that but shooting a tank with a rifle does nothing to it :P

Yes, even jets, although it is hard to stay on from what I have heard.

But would it piss the driver off no end? :p Is there a hole I could shove a grenade in...a la Starship Troopers but minus the orange? :sniper:

errr, why have you included a pic of operation flashpoint? :p
I just google iron sights, it was the first decent picture.

No :P The hatch is locked from the inside.
You could kill the gunner though, and if you were spec ops you could throw some C4 on it and blow it up.

Nah lol, they don't generally design tanks with holes in the front :p When in combat they're all buttoned up anyway.

A lot of these questions we don't really know yet, infantry has supposedly changed quite a bit in BF2, which is a good thing in my opinion, infantry combat was absoultely piss poor in both BF1942 and BFV. It was so disjointed and horrible, it was just a painful of getting from one vehicle to another. Still the game was obviously fun, but you know.

And does anyone know when the demo is released over Xfire? They were making a huge palava about it being released and they sent me two or three emails telling me, and now they seem to have given up the ghost and people are saying it's for IGN et al first... Because no doubt that will be the defining factor about whether I get it or not.

Friday, or today in about an hour..no one really knows.

Gamespy members will get it first...but we will all get it eventually.

I always found the battlefield games to be very fun and entertaining, although unlike most people I enjoyed BFV much much more than BF1942. As for people "knowing the layout of the maps" dont count on something like that...you could hide for an entire round if you went towards the edge of the map away from any spawn points and just went prone in the grass...although it did get kind of annoying that if somone put their crosshairs over you your name appeared in bright colors so they could shoot you :E

I agree that in previous titles, infantry combat was terrible..it felt like I was a 2 foot tall midget inside a rubber ball with a gun attached to it...the movement and the lag and the scale while you were walking were just...awful. Thats one feature I hope they improve in this new one.

as for riding on vehicles, it was always great fun to stand on the wing of a plane and try helplessley to balance as it flew around :D

parachuting is incredibly easy, and almost everyone who was about to get their plane shot down always survived by means of parachutes. And, as said before, its almost suicide to immediatley use your parachute in mid air...people really like to shoot down parachutes. But if you get very near the ground and let it out you usually get down without getting shot. Its great fun to use a jet to get your way into enemy territory and then parachute down unseen on top of their hangars and steal a tank or a jet or something.

as for the learning curve...Im not sure, it was pretty easy for me to pick up, but alot of my friends had extreme amounts of trouble, but in the end even they were able to get pretty good after 3 hours or so. The only thing that is very difficult to pick up in my opinion is chopper flight. I would suggest trying planes first, and then taking on a chopper...the flying style is very confusing the first go around. The first day BFV was out, almost nobody knew how to fly the choppers, and they were crashing like crazy everywhere and flying backwards and upside down, it was quite hilarious :E

Battlefield is easy to learn but difficult to master. Because it's a new game, everybody will have to learn the layout of the maps. It'll not be like entering a CounterStrike game where you'll be playing with people that know every nook and cranny by heart.
Besides, Battlefield-maps are a lot bigger than CS-maps. Way bigger. I'm guessing that even the 16-player maps offer a lot more space than your average CS-map. I've played BF:V for more than a year straight and even then I discovered new places, different routes to objectives or other tactics for maps I thought I knew by heart.
And of course another difference with CS are the vehicles. Driving a car, a tank or an APC is very straightforward: you just use your WSAD or arrow keys. Flying jets or helo's is more difficult, but BF2 is not a sim, so don't expect realistic handling or stuff like that. Generally, vehicles a lot of fun, and they're the big draw for me.
I'm guessing you'll like this game a lot.

EDIT Reginald, there is a HL2.net clan. Just join us, enter a squad with forum members and we'll teach you all you need to know. You'll be an expert in no time.

I shall join if I decide to buy it. But judging by how excited you all are, I am very seriously considering it.

We'll be able to play the demo together for sure. It's not a hardcore 1337 clan but a bunch of guys that want to play together. And it's free ;)

BF2 is going to be a whole new Battlefield...I hope...
