Hey - I just got and installed my new ATi Radeon 9800 128 Pro. I was really excited ... pop'd it in and installed the newest Catalyst off ATi's website ... and then re-installed Max Payne to test out my new power card. I of course, maxed out the details ...

I loaded up the game, which started fine, set up my controls and quickly started the tutuorial to bask in my glory...

Then before it finished loading up ... The game closed to windows without an error message and does it every time.

I did try bringing all the details to low ... but to no avail.

Alright ... To get to my question ... Is there anything I should do to top out the performance of my card besides over clocking it? In addition, does anyone know how to fix this problem with Max Payne?

I just hope I get this working before September 30th (I hope).

I assume you uninstalled your old drivers b4 poping in this card and installing the new drivers?
When you uninstalled Max Panye b4 you reinstalled, was the Max Panye folder deleted too? There might have been some left over files for video settings to your other card.
Otherwise I would have no clue as to why it would do that. Just have to troubleshoot I guess.

Yeah - I uninstalled the drivers then ran the newest Catalyst.
. . . Me so sad.

How big of a power supply are you running? The 9800Pro EATS power. Have you had any other issues with any other games or is all Max Payne related? is your DX up to date?

Max Payne actually has a bug like this that causes it to just exit when loading, I have experienced it. Got fixed in a patch, make sure its patched fully. This could of course be something else, just guessing.

Good to know. Always check your games Knowledge Base for errors, as they might already have a solution to the problem for you.

Thank you Dawdler for reminding me.

I actually had the same error that Stereo had. When I had version 1.0 installed on my windows xp system it would crash out like he explained. Patching the game to 1.5 ( I think that was the #) and the problem went away.

Also is this the only game so far that is giving you trouble?

I got a 9800 pro 256mb about a month or so back and got exectly the same sort of error with Unreal 2, the cutscences and intro worked fine but just as the game was about to start I'd get kicked back into windows, without even an error message.

I installed the latest patch for the game and everything worked perfectly. I'm sure if you install the latest patch for max payne you'll be fine.

Unreal II also had an error with the sound that made it kick back to windows (error displayed though) at a certain point (in my case, on route to the training missions).

The funniest is Freelancer and its video codec error. Unless you had a specific codec, it would just go black upon start. Like 1% of gamers had this :p
And installing it was to say the least hard (no installer, one need to backstep WM player versions from 8 to 9, and raise codec priority...).
EVERYBODY complained on driver issues in the rage3d ATI section when it came out.

no, not funny. very depressing.

wats the fix? :(

the fix is to not play freelancer because its awful, delete it, and break the CD in half, then torch the remains.

then mail the torched remains to gabe so he can eat them, gabes a hungry guy.
