Looks excellent. Definately near the top of my most wanted list.

my computer just died a little upon loading those screenies. looks like it's time for an upgrade and some adult diapers...

I'm going to explode when they release this, my ass is exploding looking at those screens! Well, off to the bathroom!

I noticed that the characters have shadows on them, too, usually in games shadows go right through the characters onto the landscape, that's going to be neat!

Well, it is a new game. Plenty of newer games have self-shadowing. Hell, Painkiller has it, and it came out two years ago.

Anyway, it looks nasty.

oshit, I want this game! It's #1 on my list, and the wonderfully ugly zombies and awesome blood make me even more excited.

The blood in the Unreal Engine 3 looks so ****ing sweet.

Wait, that's UE3?

Actually I read that:

While I was pretty certain that BioShock is running on the Unreal 3 Engine, it turns out that isn't exactly the case. The representative of Irrational Games Australia pointed out that they are using the Vengeance engine (I'm assuming this is a reference to Tribes: Vengeance) for their game, a piece of code Irrational has been working on for the past three years - a combination of Unreal 2 code and I guess Unreal 3 code as well. Bottom line is it looks like Irrational has spent quite a bit of time making the BioShock 3D code pretty much proprietary. This becomes more than evident when you see the water effects, which are essential for this game and its gameplay.

http://www.sshock2.com/bioshock/ It's the August 25th news post, the 6th one down.

except for the blood, i think the doom 3 engine can pull it off too...

That hand looks messed up... On the revolver I mean. The other one is fine though, must be odd lighting in the second pic's room.

The game looks great, but I'm not sure whether I'll get it not.

1. My computer blows
2. I'm a wuss for scary video games
3. I found system shock 2 scary

By this logic, I will cry in a corner upon playing bioshock, and have to spend thousands on therapy later on in life.

Yea, but see - SS2 is scary, that's why it's such a god game, even with dated graphics, and it being 6 years old, it's still scary, intuitive, and original.

Saw these. The first gun looks a bit odd but I'm digging the revolver. Only thing potentially stopping me getting this is the scary factor :(

Looks nice, but I'm mostly worried about how it will feel...
Some games don't get the movement/feel right and it ruins everything.
Also I can't help but get really hyped about this game, which makes every tiny flaw really disappointing when I finally play it :(

Oh well I'm buying it no matter what :E

That's incorrect though, originally they said they were using that but they switched to the UE3, I remember reading it on several forums too.. Here's a quote from the wikipedia article.

The game was originally going to run on an enhanced version of the Tribes Vengeance engine, the highly modified version of Unreal Engine 2.5 technology, used by previous Irrational titles Tribes: Vengeance and SWAT 4 and SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate. The "rendering engine and lighting has been completely re-written", according to Ken Levine [4]. In an interview at E3 in May 2006, Levine has revealed that, " we've moved to Unreal 3, we've done a lot of modifications on top of it," particularly to the way the engine handles water effects, which he claims will be very impressive, "we've hired a water programmer and water artist, just for this game, and they're kicking ass and you've never seen water like this."

Anyway, it's looking nice and I'm really looking forward to this title, though I might have to get it for the 360 unless I get a better PC.:)

I'm torn between getting it on the pc and 360. It's going to rock either way :)

Btw, does anyone know if Jonathan Chey is working on this? He was the project manager and lead programmer for SS2.:)

This is my most anticipated game as of now. I can't wait.

Apparently it is (was?) some guy's full-time job for a year to do just water effects. I still haven't seen a video preview anywhere though - I want to see some of this in motion.

Adabviak, yeah it's mentioned in my quote, they hired a water programmer and a water artist just for the water! Pretty cool and weird.:p

I thought the blood in the second pic looked very "gears of warish"... I wish we could see some video, I'm interested in the movement speed, and scale... Unreal, no matter how beautifull, always struggles to pull these off correctly. Which is I guess why I love the HL series so much. The player actually feels properly porportioned, and moves at just the right speed.

I was never fortunate enough to play the system shock games, which this is kinda' the sequel to correct? But I must say, my hype meter for this game went from "moderately high' back when the first stills were released, to "raging boner" from these last ones... Any tentative release date/and or system?

(pc for sure, what about x360/ps3?)

Korgoth, have you played SWAT 4? That runs on an Unreal engine, and it feels pretty damn proper.:p

This is more of a spiritual sucessor to the System Shock series. It's not actually related to SS.

Yeah, it's good to clarify that, but anyone who has been following this game should already know that.:)

yeah i think I played a demo gargantou, you're right, it did feel pretty accurate I suppose... What made me say that is how low to the ground the player looks in these pics, and how huge the weapons on screen seem to be to me... I dunno :p

Anyone read the 1Up interview yet? The screens look great (altho I can hear my rig screaming already) but the gameplay also really appeals to me. RPG, FPS, Adventure; it's a big mix of genres. I like games like that.

Why, I do believe my boner has torn a large hole in my pants. Soon, computers all around the world will be raped VIOLENTLY by this game.

Not to put down the game or anything, but I dont see whats so great about the graphics. They look like Deus Ex Invisible war with just a little upgrade. Maybe when its in motion it will be better, but the screens dont scream "amazing graphics" to me.

Gameplay sounds like a blast though. I played a bit of SS2 before but had to stop playing because it was a huge timesink for me during school. This sounds to be even better.

You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

can't tell me that doesn't look great :p

They do look really great, but I think it's more art direction that's responsible for that. The only thing that looks like it will kill PCs is the lighting.

Anybody else notice the hammer is still out when it's firing? :p

Pretty game, though I really don't like the rubbery looking games nowadays. I'll pick Source as prettier over the U3 engine :( Rubber just aint my thing I guess.

I've never seen someone fire a revolver with their finger behind the trigger before..

This is the first game with superb special effects that doesn't look plastic (except the blood on the walls maybe). Very impressive.
