agreed. speed limits, just like every other law, are in place bc we don't live in a utopia. and obviously they are not perfect, but to get rid of them completely wouldn't fix the problem and it definitely wouldn't lead to safer roads. though speed is obviously not the cause of all accidents, in a given situation a lower speed may mean the difference between a collision and a near-collision. you cant argue that at 60mph you could avoid a collision with the same ease as someone traveling at 30mph.I think you've pretty much nailed it. Speed limits assume the worst in real world conditions. Yeah they'd barely be necessary if everything went right. But when almost everyone has a car, and uses it daily, the worst is going to happen a LOT.
