New Computer Advice

I was planning on getting a new computer that would get the most out of HL2 and at the same time flexable enough to create a mod painlessly. I went to www.alienware.com and looked at their workstations. Most of them are overpriced so I decided to just build my own computer. The following questions would help me a lot with planning.

What are the specs of the computers that created the maps and models for HL2?

Also what is the difference between a FireGL™ X2-256t and a RADEON™ 9800 XT besides price?

Would it be wise to do DCC using a RADEON™ 9800 XT or any 'gaming card'?

What is your dream machine for creating content for a new video game?

What is your dream machine for playing HL2 and games beyond?

That I don't know but i think they are in the line of xp 2600 and a gig of ram with a radeon 9600 pro and better.

The FireGL card series are ment for developers only, it's game performance is horrible but it can render 3d at about dubble the speed of a radeon 9800xt

Dunno what DCC is but if it has something to do with rendering models then i would say you can do it, especially since the FireGL series costs ALOT.

What is your dream machine for creating content for a new video game?

2x Xeon 3.2ghz cpus, 2 gig of ram, 2x raptor 10k rpm in raid 0, 1 250gig HD, FireGL 3d rendering card, x2 20 inch LCD monitors, DVD-ROM burner.

What is your dream machine for playing HL2 and games beyond?

AMD 64 slot 939 Oced with watercooling, 1 gig of ram, R420, 2x raptor 10k rpm 36 gig in raid 0, one 76 gig raptor 10k rpm, DVD+- Burner, Logitech Z-640 speakers with an Audigy 2 ZS

I'd love that machine for gaming.
For work, i'd grab me 2x opteron 248 (for now)/ 2gb DDR ECC REG/RAID-5 SATA drives/UPC bat. backup for both machines.

Using a gaming graphics card I would think would be OK. But a 9600XT is sorta hopping on 1 leg since it only has 2 pipelines. 9700/9800pro would be a bit better and I am not sure how 128vs256mb would compare in DCC.

A while back (prolly 3+ years ago), I remember seeing some sort of device that you would put like where your CD rom drive is. You could order either a dildo or like a fake-gina. I'm sure it was in jest (at least I'm hoping it was). It would be funny if the site was still around.
