Morning all.

Im after a new computer, its use will solely be for one website. www.betfair.com
Its a betting site that involves uploading small amounts of information to the site frequently. It is vitally important that I have the fasted pc possible for this, even 1/50th of a second can make a massive difference.

I know that any pc these days can handle one website without any problems although before I make a purchase I would like to know if any particular hardware has any advantages etc.

Think the main thing is to go for a fast internet connection. The speed of the pc would only have a small effect on the speed of the website, I mean any pc thats pretty new would be ok, just a fast net connection that won't take along time to load the pages and query servers etc.

Yeah, get a fast internet connection, and if you have a router, get a better one that will give you much better pings.

what is a router?, would I need to bother with a router if I had a 2mb connection? (may be an irrelivent question)

Read above too. I asked what a router was. I have no idea. Is 2mb not enough for a few web pages sending small data? All help appreciated.

how fast web pages load is mostly on ur computer i was using a celeron 2ghz with 1.5mb connection and it mabye took 10 sec to load but now i have a amd 64 3200 and they load instantly

2mbps is probably just your download your upload is probably MUCH MUCH slower. A router is a device that allows you to split your connection and handles the packets sent.

Thanks for the reply.

so how would a router benefit me? Can you advise me on any companies who have fast uploads speeds? (uk)

Regards

You'd spend less money in the long run by getting a dedicated server. It will cost less than an internet connection that has a fast upload speed and it will be more secure and run by people who know how to run a server.

You can also look into anyone locally who can host you (co-location) and you can use their net connection (fiber optics and T3 lines). If you want your site to be fast you need a good upload speed, and "home"-oriented connections won't suffice. You need business connections and those cost way more than $100 a month.

So like I said, save your money and get a dedicated server. :)

I think teh fastest connection speed offered in teh UK thats available to residential users and doesn't cost loads is 8mbit by Bulldog, although I'm not sure what the upload speed would be.
