Announced earlier this week, we got a chance to check out THQ's latest for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Cut from the mold that brought us God of War, it's a straight forward action title that thinks not with its brain, but with its gigantic, barbarian-sized testicles.

Beyond the violence, Conan looks to sport solid, if not uninspired mechanics. Looking past the usual combo and experience systems, interacting with the environments already looks hugely entertaining with tons of hazards in which to torture enemies with. Any weapons they drop can be picked up, dual-wielded and utilized with their own unique statistics and combos. And if giant swords aren't your style, Conan possesses some mean grappling skills that are straight out of the world of professional wrestling. We'll admit it.

That carnage looks terrific! And that Conan model in the second photo looks straight out of Vallejo!!

I don't care if its a very good clone of God of War--that game was and is incredible! This may even be better if the gameplay is as good as GoW because I love the Conan universe. I just wish they could somehow get the Governor of California to do the main voice work...

not likely ..ah-nold has refused all offers/movie roles since becoming the guvernator


I havent played GoW but since the game had rave reviews it's not a bad idea to emulate it ..especially since the Conan universe would fit so well with GoW gameplay


may have to buy a 360 if this game isnt released for pc ...also if I had time I'd pick up a ps2/GoW, GoW2 ..but I can barely find time to play the games I already have

I'd rather just play God of War. It's guaranteed to be a lot better and I like the setting/atmosphere a lot better. The Greek mythology behind it is really cool and the perfect basis for an action game. Conan always seemed a bit retarded to me.

in all fairness how much Conan have you actually read? any of the Robert E Howard stories? if not, you havent read Conan

Uh ... I saw parts of those really shitty movies with Ahnuld. I fully admit that I don't know much about it, and I know you shouldn't judge a book by its' cover. All I'm saying is that my impression of the franchise is less than stellar ... the license alone certainly wouldn't inspire me to play an inferior version of a game I already own.

Robert E Howard started writing Conan stories in 1932 ..the ah-nold movie completely threw out everything written by howard and rewrote everything; it's not at all faithful to Howard's Conan ..imho Howard was a much better writer than tolkein (a contemporary of Howard) and he wasnt ashamed to put in realistic violence or moral ambiguity unlike tolkien who wrote for kids in a generic black vs white formula ..howard wrote for the pulps; his stories are gritty violent and above all else really well written ..he knows how to spin a yarn

I agree ..the license is unproven in video games and while I havent played GoW or Conan for that matter it's just my guess that it plays like GoW ..it could be totally different for all I know ...still I love the IP so imho any game based on the world of Howard is worth playing ..however I'm also the one that would be the most disappointed if they screw it up

the works of Howard on Conan are some of the best short stories ever. Amazing ability to discribe sceens, likable and hatable characters. It's all good.

Heh, would be impressive if it was a PS2 game. How early are those shots?

The dismemberment still looks pretty fun though.
