Wii Call of Duty 3 screens

About the Wii control system -

Around the time of the Doom clones, when games started using using the mouse for look up/look down (which is common today), many people called this system ridiculous saying Doom's move forward/move backward mouse function was better. This review of 'Marathon' is a good example.

But now it is standard practice, and I think the same way the Wii control system may turn out to be the superior one a few years from now. Just give it a chance. :)

Me thinks some people can't control their thumbs ;)

Bad workmen an all that.

must be low on the evolutionary chain ;)

VoS: if we cant aim with those things ..imagine casual gamers ..a friend of mine gets frustrated playing fps ..wont even attempt Deathmatch with me ..at one point I was playing 2 casual gamers at once in halo multiplyer and they couldnt touch me ..despite the fact we had all started playing halo at the same time. So obviously controllers arent the answer when it comes to fps ..sure people can eventually adapt to it but in order for fps to really hit public consciousness: it needs to be more user friendly (it's exactly the reasoning that pushed console gaming over pc gaming in terms of popularity and installed user base) ...wii may help bridge the gap for console shooters for the general public

Indeed. And let's hope that by bringing violent gaming to the general public that people begin to realize that its not the games that are making people commit random acts of violence....

I prefer M&K over a controller in FPS's, but there’s nothing more satisfying than, with a controller, aiming on an enemy and getting a clean headshot. Some people are very skilled with controllers on consoles, especially after looking through the speed run on Metal Gear Solid 3, but it requires a hefty amount of patience. ;)

Or... they just get more angry with it.
Yeah, we'll see I guess. :(

I think it'll be interesting if the Wii becomes the shooters' platform because Nintendo has always had the kiddie image (for the most part). The controller might make it even more desirable than the 360/PS3 despite "poorer" graphics. What a lot of wildcards!

The problem with that is that shooter fans are usually the first of any to complain about graphics because, let's face it, in a stale genre, that's more or less all that's new, nine times out of ten.

Agreed.

And I think that is exactly what will make the Wii such a great platform for shooters. Even with only 2 or 3 times the power of the GC, the Wii will be able to pump out some serious graphic quality but in addition to the awesome new input mechanics! That's something the other consoles just don't have. I think this alone could yield a bumper crop of shooters for the innovative new platform...but we'll see.

This game relies on graphics alot, for the dramatic effect, all the scripted sequences, the whole atmosphere. In its hart it's a very simply shooter, most of it's goodness revolves around the atmosphere. Thats why I thinkm ost people will prefer the xbox and ps3 versions.

Bloody good point.

I think too many people overlook the fact that, with the new physical user input, you're more likely too busy waving the controller and focusing on your movement than you're thinking "that's a pretty water effect".

Nintendo is going to have to realise this if they want to be successful. Zelda and Mario are great, but they're going to need to add some superficial elements to draw people in outside of the tried and true game mechanics.
I think if we look at the DS we can see the way the pendulum is swinging. A recent article about how the system is selling in the EU/UK mentioned that everyone from little kids to the elderly were buying the system. Men and women of all colors and creeds were coming in to get their hands on one of the 'cool' new handheld gaming units. This is pretty spectacular for a gaming system. And although Mario is doing very well in DS form, there are a ton of interesting other titles that are always at the top of the charts--and these aren't your typical videogames either.

I think what the Wii has to offer will be very similar. The 'cool' new device with the innovative and very 'cool' controller that really immerses you in the game. The price will be right and it will be a system that anyone can have fun with, whether you are 10 or 70 years old. I think Nintendo has their ducks all lined up at the moment and are poised to start shooting them down with their awesome new Wiimote come November....

Tada!

If it turns out to be as fun as many of us hope, the wii will convert people by the herd.

How many 'i'm disillusioned with gaming threads' have appeared in various forums over the last few years. Each that I frequent has had at least 5. We're all ready for something new.

Whoa. Check out the videos. Looking MUCH better in motion.

Not so much graphically, but just the huge amount of stuff going on at once... it actually looks like a warzone. Me likey, me likey alot :)

Pretty short, but you get the idea. ALSO! Looks like they actually kept something from the pre-rendered trailer - melee combat! Looks like it could be pretty nifty.

Oooh, and you can hold onto nades this time round, and the fuse goes down before you throw - now they'll actually be good for something. Now just the ability to throw nades back at enemies...

Definitely looking forward to this now! :D

Thats the X360/PS3 version. :p

Then maybe I'll just have to get it for 360 and Wii ^_^

Screw that silly nunchaku gimmick for a controller - I'll stick with my massively mullti-button keyboard and mouse thanks...

Cause we all know the more buttons the better the controller :upstare:

Shite, that review is stunning!

What really astounded me was their mapping of mouse functions.

In Doom, left-right motions of the mouse rotate the player, while forward-backward motions move the player forwards or backwards. All absolutely intuitive. But for some unfathomable reason, the designers of Marathon chose to make the forward-backward motions of the mouse move the player's aim up and down!

The result is one of the most insanely counterintuitive interfaces I have seen on any piece of commercial software. You swing right or left with the mouse, but move forward or backward with the keyboard. Thus, any kind of maneuvering requires your hand to jump frenetically from mouse to keyboard and back.

pwnt
That just shows how shaky the 'status quo' can be in gaming.

It reminds me of an interview that Satoru Iwata gave back at E3. The slightly hesitant response to the Wii controls at E3 was, apparently, identical to the response given to the N64's analogue stick prior to release.

He also said that adjustment goes both ways: inside Nintendo, there are people who have been using the Wii controller for a long time. These folks have gone past the adjustment period, and are now finding it "rather difficult" to go back to conventional control methods.

I have high hopes for the Wii to bring something new to the table for FPS. It's clear the genre needs it.
Who knows - when someone (probably not Treyarch) manages to put an analogue stick, a pointer, an accelerometer, a d-pad, and a tilt/position detector together in a meaningful way, it might just be the "vertical look" of console FPS :p

Good pic :)

I see no pedals, though. Only a noob would play a game without pedals!

Slightly off-topic, but,
best console control scheme for FPS before the Wiimote:

Goldeneye 64.

Dual controllers, on for each hand. It worked almost too well.
