Nice try, but nope. Nvidia can not buy off Vivendi for anything. Gabe reassured that they are working with Nvidia's people to get the best performance out of the cards.
ATI and its owners equally luck out because the game is not released yet.

Btw, wasn't their a sanction on delay threads?

Well apparently from what Doug Lombardi said in Tokyo, they are infact done with the game and are working on language support as well as 'hardware fine-tuning'.

Take from that what you will, but I think it supports my theory.

More evidence if you will that supports this theory as well...

Seems like Nvidia's new cards are due in a matter of weeks. Hmm.

Tom's Hardware:
What's next? In the following weeks we can expect new cards from NVIDIA, based on its code-named NV38 and NV36 processors, and ATI will present the RV360 alias Radeon 9600 XT later this month.

I wish Valve could've released HL2 and done the language addons later. I could be playing the game right now... Who knows...maybe it was part of the deal with Vivendi to make it a worldwide release. As for the hardware optimizations...I can't see nvidia's performance improving too much with the currect cards...but that's just me.
