New Doctor Who companion announced

The BBC has revealed that 21-year-old Karen Gillan has landed the role of the new Doctor Who companion.

The actress will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith when the series returns to BBC One in Spring 2010.

Karen previously appeared as a soothsayer in the 2008 Doctor Who episode, The Fires Of Pompeii. She said she was 'over the moon' to land the part of companion: "The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him - I just can't wait to get started."

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

The role of companion in Doctor Who is one of the most coveted in television drama. The series helped to relaunch the career of Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman went on to star in Law And Order: UK and Little Dorrit after starring in the series.

Doctor Who will return for three more specials this year with David Tennant before Matt Smith takes over the role next year

I'll have to re watch fires of pompeii to see her acting, but i'm remaining optimistic, i thought Billie Piper and Catherine Tate would be shit when i first heard they were cast but they were quite good.

Mumbles and Lisp were crap. There are a bunch of reasons Season 3 was so much better than 2 or 4, but Freema vs the Unintelligible Squad was a big one.

also the human nature 2 parter and blink. Season 1 Billie was good, second season in general was pretty crap anyway.

Season 1 Billie was still poor, but Eccleston in 1 was better than Tennant was in 2.

I ****ing hate Doctor Who. Why are they being allowed to make another series? Is Russel Davies not dead yet? It is a monument to tacky and tasteless science-fiction, and being British myself I have often been held... responsible, for its gestation and continued existence by friends of mine in varying parts of the world. I can’t blame them. It’s just so irredeemably bad, and I have nothing but contempt for those stupid, stupid people that watch it. Except Stem. He gets a free pass.

Anyway, topic at hand – a redhead that is not Catherine Tate. I completely approve. I know nothing of her acting credits, but y’know – redhead, and a particularly attractive one at that. Here’s to hoping the redhead heroine trend starts to gain motion... even in the most dire and mediocre of shows.

Also, the show sucks and it's completely worth watching for similar reasons. I would love to write for Doctor Who actually. I mean, it's not like you'd have a particularly hard act to follow, and it'd be pretty fun all told.

No English actors left though. They've used them all.
