Real or fake? The text translates to an announcement of Half-Life Portal getting 10 million visitors. The site thanks all the visitors who helped them reach this milestone, and claims that Valve has sent them the screenshot to use as a thankyou gift to the public.

Something's wrong with the Vort.

I'm inclined to suspect fake, but I'm a suspicious bastard and such.

Did you join just to post this? -_-

I've been meaning to join for a while, when I saw that this hadn't been posted here yet, I thought 'hey lets kill two birds with one stone'.

Ah, Ok. Just most people who join and post threads with their first post are bots or spammers.

Incidentally, where in NSW?

It's footage from the first EP2 trailer with Episode One models put on top.

I don`t think so. In the trailer only a small part of the bridge was shown and from a different angle. And the trailer didn`t show the Advisor pod (?) on top of the bridge. I think it is real, although the Vortigaunt does look a bit weird.

I'm not sure if that is an Advisor pod, looks kind of odd like that.

Perhaps because this Vortigaunt is the one that leads Gordon through the caves, they've made him look unique?

He doesn't look unique so much as... engine-b0rked wrong.

It might be an advisor pod. I'll have to look at an advisor pod to confirm, though.

That advisor-pod is vertical and attached to something. Weird. Also, Alyx's jacket looks all worn and torn-up. The shadows and stuff make it look pretty-legit... though if that terrible foliage in the foreground is part of the new foliage system, it'd really suck.

It's very well done if it's fake though.

I believe the foliage is still from an early version, like what we saw in the trailer at the end of EP1.

I think this screenshot can be legit - the Virtigaunt looks a bit different because... it doesn't have any bumpmaps on. Maybe due to a glitch in the engine version during the screenshot?

vorts have bellybuttons

bad texture filtering, lack of shaders, no and normal/bump mapping... valve could have sent them a better one

The vort looks strange because it's using a different, phong shaded skin. It's still bumpmapped AFAIK, you can see detail beyond it's polys if you check it out :)

Oh, I see. I guess the new version of the Source engine isn't completely ready yet. Either that or it's an old screenshot they just had lying around.

Why is it that every new picture is from that exact area? Bridge and all? I want pictures of the antlion nests, dammit.

While its a nice touch to add bump mapping into the vort's skin, I still think it looks odd as it used to have a much less smooth skin. Unless of course, its a difference of Age within vorts OR a different variant.
A combination of both bump and a new revamped* texture from the old would have been nice.
*That means that it would keep the wrinkles.

Its a cool shot but why oh why is everything taken at low settings. Doesn't make much sense to me. Look at the floor Alex had more detail in Ep1. In a screenshot show a while ago you can see the rocks got a huge bumbmap upgrade. Look at that ugly shit....

OH well better then nothing and probably have a reason to send a low setting screenshot..

If this screen is real, the most interesting thing is the Advisor Pod stand :O

It looks quite legit. The Vortigaunt skin is quite different.

Look at the first trailer, and then the 2nd trailer and game play videos.
Quite a difference.

But why is the pod taller then the strider?

It was pretty small in Episode one.

Maybe it's something else.

And what's that prickly thing to the pods' left?

More questions then answers.
But we do know now, that this scene takes place when the player only has the crowbar or gravity gun, or else you could shoot at the soldiers.

That isn't Alyx's gun. It's the thing carrying the transmission...you see it in hl2/ep1

hmmm, kinfda looks real, but then the shading of the vort's skin and most strange - the shadows on Alyx's clothes. Look at the position of the sun and the strange lightning on Alyx's shoulders, hood, and jeans. This can't be real, the light couldn't falling on them in that angle...

PS: The horizon to the left (hill with woods) contrasts way too sharp with the sky, which is not usual for the HL2 graphics engine. Looks like it's just another layer put over the sky

the vort doesn't look too bad... infact I quite actually like it. Hopefully the next batch of screenshots released by Valve will look much better than this (not saying that this shot looks horrible, but it cooould be better)

Please alert me on how this is a "slight spoiler"

Thanks.

This means Alyx survived the crash, and that she is with you for this part of the game.

Didn't ruin it for me, but for others it apparently did :hmph:

The train crash at the end of Ep1, apparently some people were unsure if she would survive it or not. I think the vort carrying her in the trailer fed this theory.

At the end of my ep 1 was just a white light. How do you know it crashed?

Well, I guess we don't. I had assumed by the trailers that this was the case.

Yeah, trailer assumed mainly.

What I want to know is: What is a Advisor Pod doing on a bridge?

Those are trees.

New draw distance, recall?

What I want to know is: What is a Advisor Pod doing on a bridge?

Travelling? :cheese:

I say real for 2 reasons:
I don't think we've seen any shot with that exact angle on the bridge.
It uses the new Vort (God I hope it looks different in the final game) and I don't think we've seen any EP1 shot/trailer with the Vortigaunt standing in that pose, at least not with his full body shown.

whats that funky blue glowing thing on alyx's gun?
That's not her gun. That's her EMP tool/data storage device. It's basicly a multi-purpose hacking tool. She uses it throughout HL2 and EP1 to hack terminals, open doors, re-programme rollermines and, of course, store the Combine's and Mossman's transmissions.
