New Gabe Newell Interview...

Well, not much info that we didn't know already tbh.
Some interesting bits: the Combine is planning to sent additional reinforcements in order to capture Gordon (more new enemies in the future?).

Also, I may be overanalyzing, but it seemed interesting to me that Gabe used a cliff as an example for the opportunities that the portal gun offers.
Maybe Valve is already planning to use it in future Half-Life episodes?

That they are doing, they are using Portal to teach players how to use this new technology and also to get deedback on it, if it does well which it will definately will, then they will incorporate it into their future half-life games ;)

Nice interview. I'm glad my actions have pissed the Combine off. I guess it's fair to say the Combine transmission was probably about Gordon.

Cool..now the Combine are like "How could this happen? How could one man create this much havok?"

I agree with Samon, im glad I pissed them off :).

Gordon Freeman: "Now that I have your attention, come & get me you fat slugs!!!!!"

"The PC is going to continue to be our primary focus. It gives us a lot of advantages as a development platform, and it also forces us to confront a bunch of issues, like for us it's very important to work well on older hardware and also take full advantage of new hardware. So the DX7 generation is much slower than the next-gen hardware, but DX10 is actually going to be more advanced than either the Xbox 360 or PS3."

DX10 ;)

"The Wii is more of a challenge because of its input - that's something that we're going to have to work harder to understand."

Valve touching some wii's?

How much nicer is it working with EA rather than Vivendi?

Gabe Newell: Well, EA hasn't sued us yet, so that's an improvement.

I could see Portal working well on the Wii. Or a garrys mod like game. Or a combination.

Could it ever be made to work in something as well-defined as the Half-Life universe?

Gabe Newell: The way we've designed the game, it would struggle if it had advertising intruding on it, because we weren't thinking about that when we were designing it. Obviously, any sports games are very well suited to having advertising.

It would truly suck to see an advertisement on a combine dropship..

It would in a way ruin the immersion in the gameworld, but in a way it might now..Real life has advertising, but the strictly regulated City 17 having a huge billboard in the middle of the city would ruin the immersion, IMO.

Yes LOVE Gabe interviews!!! Reading..

Did you read what he said? Of course in-game ads wouldn't work in HL2. They're not bothering trying to implement them.

Different kinds of games would be better suited to it. I, for one, have no problem with a few in-game ads if that means less cash out of my pocket.

But we'll go through all three episodes to see... We sort of made a commitment to do it three times and then assess.
I was wondering what their plans were after Episode Three, if they were going for more episodes or stop and spend years doing Half-Life 3. (Here's hoping for more episodes).

Portal is sort of at that beginning stage, where it's showing a lot of potential and we're working through all the technology issues, such as: "Oh, how do sounds work through portals and so on?"
How sound works in Portal - I never considered what would happen. Sounds that can travel through portals, very interesting. I wonder if they will take advantage of this for some of the puzzles.

Yeah, budget priced or free ad-supported games are cool. But when you wind up paying $50 for the pleasure of being advertised to, as is the case with MANY games, that's a big problem. For instance that Cingular logo that stayed at the top left of the screen in NFSU all the goddamn time, or in Splinter Cell how the camera constantly zooms in on whatever PDA he had running. It concerns me that Valve even acknowledges it as a viable practice.

I think they accept it as a practice if it's applicable. Like he said, having it in Half-Life would stupid, it doesn't fit. But having a sports game with real adverts along the sidelines rather than fake ones seems ok.

This is one of the better interviews.

Do I smell a new version of Half-life on the Wii? :farmer:

And the Wii is the thing that is both furthest outside and most exciting, because of the controller. I have to say that we don't understand how to take advantage of that yet. We think there's a lot of potential there, and our respect for Nintendo goes up a notch, as they're the ones who are doing the things that are disruptive and exciting.

The only thing that could logically be ported to the Wii would be Garrys mod.

Well, I don't think that the Wii can handle the physics of Gary's mod:rolling: thank you for playing though.

Because it's easier to position things when you have a physical object that you can move and rotate. I don't really know how easy it is to play an FPS with the Wiimote, but the type of gameplay in Garrys mod would be best suited for the controller.

And if my crappy computer from 2003 can handle the physics of Garrys Mod, I think the Wii can. Thanks for playing though.

Vivendi saw Steam as the devil himself. Lots of "we want more money, waaahhh!" and other soap opera drama included, Valve won.

Yeah, Valve were the good guys cus Steam > Vivendi. It was none of Vivendi's bisnuess and I for one am glad they got their asses handed to them.

Yeah nice idea ;)

Great interview =D

"VUG sought intellectual property rights to Half-Life and a ruling preventing Valve from using Steam to distribute Half-Life 2."

God, I still can't believe what a catastrophe it would have been if Valve lost the intellectual property rights to Vivendi...

a "hit the headcrabs in mid air with a crowbar before they zombiefie you" game on the Wii! :D Would be great!

When reading such interviews of ValVe it really shows that not only they are great videogame producers, they are also very strategic managers. Their estimations and visions of the gaming market always seems sharp and their communication with the consumers are so thought out. Not only does their gamecontent stands above of the rest, but also their commercial actions and movement. They really outsmart the competition.....fascinating read.

That's mostly because Gabe (and a few others) started their computer-related carrieer in the biggest software marketing company known to man: Microsoft.:naughty:

100% agreed.

oh this is hilarious

Gabe Newell: Well, EA hasn't sued us yet, so that's an improvement.

Have you got any comments to make on what happened with Vivendi, or would you rather not?

Gabe Newell: (Laughs) That was our old girlfriend... We've been very happy with EA, they're a very professional, very effective organisation. And nobody is suing anybody, so that's a vast improvement.

lmao
