New apple laptop

Just found out that my new Apple Powerbook (the 15 inch model) has shipped and should be with me in a few days! I'm so excited :bounce:
Got a pretty sweet deal on it too through the apple store for education, plus I get £100 back because I bought it with an ipod mini.

Anyone else here have any experiences with powerbooks or apple machines in general?

You suck. Apple sucks. Apple bad.

:p

*runs*

If I bought a Mac, it would be a powerbook.

just bought a 12-inch powerbook. love it. now, hopefully my ipod mini is in my apt office when fedex dropped off the package today, else i'm going to be really pissed. seriously, who would steal an ipod with my name engraved on the back? well, honestly a lot of people, just hopefully no one here in Lubbock, Texas.

What makes one notebook "better" than another? Price? Performance? Both? What drove your decision?

My friend has an iBook, and I'm soooo envious of him. Apple makes the prettiest devices around, and the powerbook isn't an exception.

Edit: Plus his came with Marble Blast Gold installed >.<

Well, when it comes to Apple, usually price would be the main factor against. However, due to the discount available through my Universities store, the price was a lot more competetive. Other factors influencing my decision were the dimensions (the powerbook is just under 3cm thick when folded shut), weight, and the fact that the aluminium case just looks so cool. Plus I didn't want the hassle associated with my experience of windows on laptops and stuff just not working.

I know you can always sort windows bugs out given a bit of time, but if I'm writing up lecture notes mid-lecture and all of a sudden windows decides to freeze, then I've lost my notes. From what I've heard, Apple machines are a lot less crash-prone, mostly due to the fact that Apple know what hardware will be running their OS, and as such there is a lot less to worry about in terms of compatibility. Also, the amount of software that comes bundled with an Apple machine as standard is pretty impressive; iLife, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and more (hope it comes with Marble Blast Gold though!). In addition, Firewire 800 ports and DVI/S-video output as standard also added to my desire to own one of these machines. I can just imagine ripping loads of movies to my external firewire 800 hard drive, then playing them back on a big tv screen or projector using the video out options.

Basically, all those features and software options bundled in as standard, as well as integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, and the educational discount I got, are what pursuaded me to go Apple. Also, trying to use my Ipod with firewire on windows has given me no end of compatibility headaches, and I can imagine that won't be the situation with a Mac machine. It's not like I'm going to abandon windows though, I'm still going to have my XP box for gaming and such. For anyone who automatically goes "Apple. Bleh." without knowing any of the features of the operating system, you should check it out here before instantly dismissing it as inferior. I especially like the sound of the 'Automator' which sounds like a batch file on speed with a fancy interface.

BTW has anyone else here ordered from the UK Apple store before? If so, how long did shipping take for you?

why...why god why.....but meh it will be an experience to use one i guess.

Apple notebooks I believe are better because they just work. None of that bullshit you have to go through with windows (the bullshit that makes it the best Desktop OS around).

Think about it. When you're using a notebook, you're usually in a situation where it just has to work, no hassle, right then and there. It has to be simple point and click, and it has to not be borkable. Mac OS right there. Its simplicity makes it the best notebook OS around in my humbe oppinion.

At the same time though, its simplicity makes it the worst desktop OS around in my oppinion.

I personally detest Apple (though I get annoyed at Windows, I still love it because I'm so familiar with it) but I'm sure it'll run and work like a dream and get the job done in style.

My Apple machine should be here later today! I'll update this thread with pics n stuff when it arrives.

Cool should be cool to it. Love the look of those apple laptops.

Ahhh.. i'm so annoyed right now. I missed the delivery yesterday, so i called up TNT to get my package resheduled, and was guaranteed it would arrive before 12 today. So i call up TNT to see where it is, and apparently they have no record of the redelivery on their systems, and its sitting there in a warehouse, and i've got to wait till tomorrow. Stupid customer service representatives.

Ahhhh man, unlucky. That sucks when they do things like that. Too mnay times have i sat there waiting for a package with anticipation for it not to arrive. Hope it comes tomorrow mate

I know how you feel, so damn frustrating, but just think how pleased you will be when it arrives.

i think a mac is good for 2 things. Video/photo editing, and certain networking things since it is built upon Unix. Other than that, I'll crush it in a vice like the guy from AOTS (Attack of the Show) did to that Mighty Mouse.

Even a p4 on os x performs better than a g4 or dual g5.

you need to do some laundry...building up back there in pic 2

Yeah but I doubt a P4 would be quite as friendly to my battery as the g4 in my Powerbook is.
