This website is made by me and promotes my idea for a Half-Life 2 mod concept. Please keep in mind that there is no actual mod team yet, so if you like my idea and have time and skills you want to use helping me in realising the project, join!

ever

ever had trouble shooting a laggy cs player because their avatar kept relocating? Now imagine its not relocating 2 meters, but 30 or 40. High speed chases with multiple players connected over the internet is NOT easy to do. It takes so much bandwidth, and even a slightly laggy connection can make the game unplayable. The professional team behind tron 2.0 decided it was TOO hard to make the motorcycle racing work over the internet, TOO hard to do without a 10 megabit lan network. As such racing only works on the lan, and if they couldn't do it then I doubt any mod team could.

And if you plan on implementing other cars on the highway that arn't player controled, your talking about an enormous amount of bandwidth needed for each player. Theres a reason why gta3 can't be played over the internet without severe lag, the reason is we don't all have t3 connections. I know how badly we need a mad max multiplayer shootem-up racing game, but I really think that the ability to do it just isn't here yet. Once we all have fiberoptic connections, then its a whole new ball game.

EDIT:
I noticed you mentioned some of these technological challenges, its just my opinion that these challenges are simply too steep to tackal at this current time.

I think its an awesome idea and I think its do-ablo.
Cerberus, you cant say GTA3 cant be done multiplay, beacsue currently the only way to play GTA3 multi is MTA, and thats still in ALPHA. HL1 (Imo) has the best netcode of any game out there right now, belive me, im on 56k, and HL is fully playablo online for me (TFC to be more specific), but games like UT2K3 and Q3 are not. HL2 Will have even better netcode then HL1, so I dont think it would lag as bad as you think.

Also, for AI, all you would need to do is setup something where certin cars follow certin paths at certin times, so 90% of AI traffic would be compltely client side. If something what to happen to one of the AI cars, such as they get hit by another car, shot, whatever, then only a packet dictating whatever happen would need to be sent out between the server and other clients. The reason AI cars isnt doablo in GTA3/VC in multi is limitations of the game engine, a lot of numbers, like how many cars can be on screen and such, are hardcoded.

And just to clarify, I play MTA VC and its fully enjoyable on a 56k connection.

Anyway, good luck with your mod MightyV, it looks like a pretty awesome idea, I know id play it :).
