This is about a secion of Half Life 2: Lost Coast, if you still haven't got it and don't want to know what happens, please leave.

I for one, got greately surprised to see the back of the Combine Helicopter. I'm not sure if it showed up on the reviews screenshots, but I didn't looked anyway so I didn't got spoiled.

But what surprised me the most was how it acted. You see, when you play Water Hazard, the Combine Helicopter acts on a scripted way, droping bombs in certain areas and such. But this one is different. It intercept rockets and moves like a gunship. You can confirm that by the noise the helicopter does when it fires. It is diferent from the main game and it is exacly the same as the gunship.

To sum it all up, did Valve included a new type of NPC, or it just used the Combine Gunship AI's with the Helicopter model? (if it did, I was not sure it was possible since the gunship have unique movements)

Gunships are helicopters are both scripted... try spawning them yourself, they won't move.

I'd say this is because they use air AI nodes. Just like how the ravenholm style fast zombies don't climb unless there are climb AI nodes. This has nothing to do with scripting and lots to do with how Source AI and game AI in general works.

i was using noclip during one of my play throughs, and a gunship did appear on the left side of the map when facing the helicopter. it was very brief, so couldn't get a SS. i assumed it was just a bug, but who knows?

in fact, i bet all they did was use the same old gunship script sequence, but used a helicopter model instead of the gunship model. it moved, fired, and crashed exactly like a gunship, so yeah.

The helicopter gun's performance is also very similar to the gunship's, in that it fires a steady, straight stream of bullets. The Water Hazard copter, on the other hand, was like an automatic shotgun on steroids.

I personaly don't like this. I always viewed the Helicopter as a much stronger combine asset, which could you a lot of weaponjs to take you down. From what I see in Lost Coast, it just looks the same.

If it was supposed to be a easy to defeat enemy, Valve should have (in my opinion of course) included a Gunship, and not a Helicopter.

I guess you wanted every other game where a big beefy bad guy takes 100+ direct rocket hits before it crashes eh? Rocket launchers aren't exactly a poor man's weapon you know.

They did a simple model swap, put the helicopter model in the gunship models place. You are actually fighting a gunship.

it was hard to defeat if you are pro and did LC on HARD first time u played it through

o wait i did that!:p

tho yeh it did seem more gun shipy than helicopter ish it coulda have really done with a totally different model and working in a new attacking thingy:p

yeah, anyone notice that the HELICOPTER shot down your rockets? it didnt do that on water hazard

from what i remember .. unless you cheated :p, you dont have the rocket launcher until you reach Odessa.

I suppose you mean Highway 17, and yes, the gunship shoot down your rockets, but not as many as in lost coast...

I can't recall having any rockets or finding the rocket launcher at all in Water Hazard...

All im going to say is that it isnt that hard to shoot down rockets, if you practice using the airboat cannon you can actually get pretty good, so im cool with the heli being able to shoot down rockets

(yes, it is a gunship with heli model, but it fits better)

I liked it. I saw helicopter and felt at home. It shot down my second rocket which caught me off guard, but I made sure that didn't happen again. Damn thing can't twist around like a gunship which I liked.
