I have an Antec something or other in my comp right now. I just got back from Xmas break a couple days ago and when my comp was off I could hear a hissing noise coming from my PSU like air was being pushed out. I turn my computer on and I hear a high pitched noise in its place. All seems to be working well with my comp from there on out.

Then when I went to bed, I unplugged the PSU so the hissing would stop. It did. When I wanted to turn it back on, I plug the PSU back in and hit power. The comp fires up for a split second and turns off. Power button doesn't work after that. I try the switch on the PSU, same thing. A few times later it does actually fire up with the usual high-pitched sound and here I am.

I'm wondering if I need a new PSU (all but certain I do), and what PSU to buy. This Antec one lasted me just over a year ('till now) and I was hoping for something more reliable.

EDIT: This is the PSU I have. Didn't realize Newegg has EVERY transaction I've had with them saved. Pretty handy.

This is the one i'm gonna be picking up tomorrow (it even comes in a leather suitcase!! :O - absolutely no idea why though :| ).

Woah, don't need something that fancy. A 500W one would be fine for me. I just want something that's reliable.

Well, I hear that antec makes really good psu's from just about everyone, I have an Antec Truepower 430w myself and it's still running strong after a couple of years. So if I were you, even though you just had a bad experience with your antec psu i would probably get this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817371002
because I can vouch for the quality of the Truepower series. However if your stuck on going with another brand, I heard the best bang for the buck ones are, antec, thermaltake, enermax, and also this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159040
, that is assuming it's as good as the reviews suggest it is, if so it looks like a great psu for the price.

A lot of people have said that Antec's quality has fallen. Especially on the basic models (parts used are not up to par). Enermax is another brand that has been Antec's equal in the past for the consumer market. Also Seasonic is known for stability, No frills or flashy products.

Really, thanks for the update Asus, I didn't know that about antec(i got my psu about 2 years ago i guess they were better back then...)
I was thinking about geting that antec truepower trio for myself, but now that you mention that, what do you think would be a good alternative, Enermax? Isn't Thermaltake anygood, I'm looking for the best psu for about $100. I just want something that futureproof to a certian extent.
Thanks.

PS: Sorry for asking my own questions Amishslayer, i just figured i'd ask them here since i'm looking for basically the same thing you are.:P

are you sure its your PSU? I'd do a little bit more troubleshooting before spending money on something that isn't broken......

Absolutely positive. Also, after reading reviews on the PSU I have people that hear the same hissing and high-pitched squeal (while it's on) heard it just before it died (sometimes taking some of their other computer components with it).

I'd personally be happy to recommend seasonic, high quality, solid/stable power output. Corsair's entries into the market are meant to be very good (which is not surprising as they are seasonic units). FSP are also very good and i also hear good things about the hiper psu's from those that have them.

then its probably a good idea to get that sucker out of there! :)
I'd reccomend seasonic, enermax, or PC power & Cooling.....

That should be more than enough for what you have. Although I wouldn't carry over a 400watt PSU to a new build or a major upgrade.

Not planning on an upgrade or new build for a few years...even if I get a new one it won't be high-spec.
