New Rage details!

LOL at Carmack's stereotypical geek voice.

that trailer's impressive
consider me hopeful

Am I right in assuming that Carmack is the only one left from the original Id team?

LAWL,

Carmack just stated halo pro players cant compare to a quake pro player... let the flame wars begin

Carmack does question time now. Hopefully he says something I can actually understand. He lost me a couple of times when talking about programming.

Loving both consoles and PC not allowed. Flame War resumed.

OK, If you take a look at the Rage PDF, they said that - in order to have the game code be scalable for all systems, they had to completely change the way the jobs were done, because the way they had originally done it could not be done on the Cell processor.

Whether that means the game will take longer to finish, or whether that means the PC and 360 versions will lose performance due to running code suited to the PS3 (or both) wasn't said.

He also said the PS3's rasterizer is definitely a bit slower, unless they can get more performance out of it before it's finished, perhaps by reducing some other graphics in the game.
John Carmack says PS3 ver RAGE 20~30fps, blames RSX rasterizer.
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=carmack+rasterizer+slower&aq=f&aqi=&fp=1d3438fbc28dc0ec

In normal usage, the term refers to the popular rendering algorithm for displaying three-dimensional shapes on a computer. Rasterization is currently the most popular technique for producing real-time 3D computer graphics. Real-time applications need to respond immediately to user input, and generally need to produce frame rates of at least 25 frames per second to achieve smooth animation.

A lot of developers simply drop things like decals, shaders, or texture resolutions to compensate for the PS3 it seems. I've seen so many games that look better on the 360 than the ps3 because of this.

Unless the engine is written specifically for the PS3, compromises have to be made to achieve a playable frame rate. This certainly isn't the case for some of the engines designed around the PS3 architecture though. Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 (going by the footage) are probably the best looking console games thus far.

Fallout 3 + ID Tek5 = Rage.............

While it certainly has a similar setting, Rage is closer to a standard FPS as far as the gameplay. I'm not saying it won't have any RPG elements though. Details are still pretty light.

It's so cool to see these interesting character types showing up in games like Rage. Some of the characters and settings remind me of Blade Runner, you know? So tired of games with Knight, Ninja, Generic Soldier #32b.

**** it, after seeing the QuakeCon trailer, I don't just want RAGE, I need it!

A long time ago I remember Carmack swearing that Id would have never used Microsoft's DirectX again. Only OpenGL for the future games. Now we can lol about that ;)

Well, at least the PS3 version uses OpenGL, right?

So does the PC version...and of course the Mac version...in fact the 360's the only version that runs on DirectX, so I'm not sure what PaoloM's point is exactly...

That they wouldn't use DirectX again and yet here we are.

STALKER wasn't really open ended (in stock format, anyway) as you were always being prodded toward the NPP and the inevitable ending.

If you're waiting on Rage to be the first open-ended FPS then you're waiting on the wrong game. All I've heard is that there is a hub city that activates the various missions.

F'in health regen. I was looking forward to this game until I saw that.

Weren't they going to have several huge areas with that hub though? In fact wasn't the game supposed to be 10 DVD's or something outrageous? I was extremely skeptical of it being more than 2 or 3 DVD's when id claimed that. Anyone have some news on this?

I saw some apparently in game footage, and between this and the description of the game play style, this game has my undivided attention. It sounds like they've taken a note from Valve, with much attention paid to the artistic quality and pacing.

There are apparently no monster closets either, with the exception of one joke about it.

There was an interesting interview that Carmack gave about rage a couple of days ago to some Polish site. Linkies at RPS:-

It was all a little bit too technical for me, but was kind of disappointing is that it sounds like the Tech 5 engine doesn't support a time cycle with respect to day/night which given its clearly a bit more open world for an id game seems kind of foolish really..

Threw me off a little when you said Rage engine. That's Rockstar's engine. Id's is called Tech 5. :p

It does sound like a cool feature, I'll admit, but a day night cycle is a huge resource hog. I'm sure they could have done it fairly easily if they wanted to put the resources there, but as it is, they are having trouble getting the PS3 to run it smoothly. Their target is 30 FPS for single player and 60 FPS in multi-player.

Corrected for pedantry ;)

I'm thinking from the perspective of other developers adopting it. Open world engine without the ability to day/night cycle Vs say the Dunia engine, R* Rage engine or the good old X ray stalker engine seems like a bit of a steep concession to make.

They might not have thought of it, or thought it was worthy to work on, but I agree that they should put a day/night cycle in the PC version at least. A feature that can be disabled if necessary.

People who buy the game on a console might buy the game again on the PC one day when PCs that can run it full on are commonplace. The PC version is already much better as it is though.

I'm eager to get my hands dirty and make some mods for it. Things like sound effects, animations, weapons, enemies, costumes/enemy textures, and last but not least, mess with the buggies and their attributes. I'd like to play around with the top speed or acceleration, but make it so the grip on the sand is poor or something.

Mess around with anything interesting, you know. If anything, I'd make the game more challenging, since I probably won't touch anything until after I've completed it.

OK, story is not so important in a FPS game, but I have to say that apocalyptic falloutish mad maxish scenarios are becoming a little over-used. Nuclear wars, global warming, asteroid impact. There's a serious lack of imagination, in my opinion.

I'd hardly say Stalker, Fallout 3 and (yet unreleased) Borderlands constitutes a deluge of post-apoc games. This given it features vehicles seems the only one that's remotely mad maxish.

Hopefully some Cyberpunk games next though. ;)
