New Spore media

Ugh, I still can't get over how childish they made it look now. :|
I want bloody fights between creatures damn it.

I was emailed these a couple days ago.(Spore newsletter)

Man, just watched one of the IGN video previews of the creature creation and I am blown away. Looks MUCH cooelr than I thought it would. I am very excited for this one. The creature creator is a free download in June?

The game's looked childish since E3 2006. Quit whinging.

The creature creator has more features than I thought.

My hopes of creating a predator race, has been dashed

Still, I can't wait to create my own race of evil, blood-thirsty gnomes, with there fat bellies, evil hats and weaponised garden rakes

I also can't wait for the slogans:

"Everytime you create a creature, God kills a kitten"

Oh don't worry, I'm still buying it.
I'm sure somebody will mod it to be gory again.

Looks cool.

A question though: is there any actual aspects of Darwinistic evolution present in the game, i.e. natural selection and random mutation? Do creatures that inhabit your planets evolve or are they static? If so, that would be a huge missed opportunity, since I kinda hoped it would be a bit like Gene Pool.

I was never excited about this game, only mildly interested. I'd barely watched any media or read any articles.

But after watching IGN's tour of the creature creator, I'm astounded. I now know how my entire summer's gonna be spent.

Wow, so very re-hyped for this now. The creature creator was pretty cool (the IGN guy was hilariously inept :D), but that last video was amazing. Will is the ****ing man.

The "new" style is growing on me quite a bit. It actually looks pretty incredible in motion, considering the scale of it.

For a game that's all about letting the player create, taking that power out of their hands would be a little counter-active.

Not saying it wouldn't be cool, though. :)

As far as your creature mutating, it's up to you, but obviously weaker species would be wiped out as the game progresses and technology comes into play.

Mmmyeah. Perhaps it would've been cool if they added a sandbox mode to the game where you throw in creatures onto a planet and see them adapt over generations.

Want. Haven't payed an ounce of attention to this game, but now I'm on board.

I'm kind of disappointed that you can't make Marine civilizations, but I'm still looking forward.

It doesn't. But I bet it will be one of the first mods.

The creatures are all determined by a simple genetic code anyway. You could have starter species which mutate over time very easily. It would be very easy to implement Darwinian evolution into the game.

That said, we will probably see emergent evolution in the game between the species, a sort of balanced eco-system evolution, but not evolution within the species, because there is little variation and little selection pressure.

But, like I said, it would be insanely easy to mod in.

I couldn't stop laughing at the IGN guy's pathetic use of the Creature Creator. How does a 'dragon' become a floating blob with mouths for eyes...

Like otherguy said, there's always mods. It'd be pretty fun playing a divine creator who just "supervised" his creations. :P

Okay, this is addressed to you and everyone who has or is going to come out with a "but they don't have X!" complaint:

It's Maxis. Wait for the expansion. ;)

I absolutely love the creature creator. It looks so awesome!

Moreso than the actual spore game, I wish a creature creator such as this was capable in an online type game where you would create a creature and try to propagate your species and compete with others, player and npc alike in a vast world.

No need for silly human based character designers which are usually all crappy(with the exception of city of heroes). This would allow EVERY SINGLE player to have a totally unique species.

<sigh> before I die, I hope.

Why does the IGN reviewer sound like one of the guys from gamespot I remember in the past?

It sounds like Jeff Gerstmann! Is he working for IGN now?

EDIT: No wait it's one of the other guys at Gamespot I think... Dammit what's his name.

EDIT 2: Aha! I think the person I'm thinking of is Jason Ocampo. Is that Jason Ocampo reviewing this? Did he join IGN too?

YES! YES IT IS. **** yes. I don't know why, but it's cool remembering reviewers voices. I was a member of gamespot for the longest time. I don't know why I said Jeff Gerstmann before... I think it came to my mind because of the whole firing hubbub about him... but nope, it definitely sounds like Jason Ocampo.

The IGN guy's name's at the beginning of the vid: Jason Ocampo.

Edit: *looks at timestamps*... *shakes fist...!*

My hype for this game has been at least partially restored. :D

Maxis plans on releasing two different versions of the Creature Creator on June 17. The first will be a free demo that contains approximately 25-percent of the content in the full creator. The other will actually be a retail package for $9.95 that features the full version of the creator. Whatever creature that you create will work in Spore when it ships later this year. (The Creature Creator will, of course, be built-in to the full game.) Until then, check out our video and start imagining.

Wow.

This is something I wouldn't mind spending 10 dollars for.

I know my brother will buy it.

I really like the look of this now :D

I just thought it would be sims alien edition but now maybe something more ;)

I guess you never read ANY preview whatsoever for Spore then, seeing as there's no preview(Professional atleast) that I've read that makes it sound anything like Sims Alien Edition..

Silly Lambda, judging games without reading previews is for rabbits!

I just watched all of the new previews and trailers for the game and I guess I can live with the new look.
The cell phase looks trippy as hell.

Did people think EA would make this an M-Rated game and make it full of blood? :P

It's Maxis we are talking about... This is their next big hit that could possibly replace The Sims and they need it to have an awesome look.

I don't know why people are so anti-colorful graphics all of a sudden. All of the "next-gen browns" has ruined everyone :P I love the new look. It also helps with perception where if things look cartoony, it's easier to make it look believable (but if it is realistic, we expect it to act realistic as well).

I for one welcome our new colorful graphics overlords.

The only thing I'm worried about is the simplified creature phase. In the first demo, you were able to kill creatures, turn them into ragdolls, and then rip off various parts and eat them. Now you simply have one set animation which causes the animal to die and disappear into a poof of smoke.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've been concerned about.
The gore added to the creature phase, gave you alot of variety in how to kill things and stuff.

Now it seems like they scrapped the physics and everything, so now it's pretty much like a standard RPG-system where you just attack it and that's it.

Hopefully instead of removing the gore, they chose to make the gore optional, and they just had the gore turned off in the trailers and videos so the little kids can watch them....

The creature creator looks like a lot of fun :D Hype has been restored >_< Want.

As long as I get to create my race of jerks/assholes that'll hopefully be spread to other peoples games then Im good.

Click here for a true artificial life simulation system. Not a game but a full research project. As an artificial life fanatic, I have to admit that a game has to be somewhat watered down in darwinistic evolution rules: IMO Electronics Arts is simply looking for some fun.

Whoa I don't remember that.

You have a link to the video please??
