New Spore media

Who knows, maybe we can mod it in, I'm gonna hope we can, perhaps it's left in the game files hidden somewhere.

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the water-phase and the ability to build underwater civs, was that removed for a future expansionpack or something?

There were no water civs, and the water creatures are now only in the tide pool phase.

Erm yes there was, originally Will Wright said you could build underwater civs in bubbles, the same way you can build civs on planets without atmosphere in glass-bubbles..

That was scrapped early in development. :p

That sucks, **** you Maxis, and **** you EA, **** you and **** your families and their families families and your friends families and their families.

This is Maxis you're talking about, you're probably going to be seeing underwater cities and flying cities in 30 expansion packs.

You can still build glass bubbles on planets and possibly underwater, but you can't have swimming civilizations.

Guess that might come in an expansion. I hope game play mechanics aren't simple. Or this game will be very very short. :frown:

They are simple. The game is a short compendium of other games. Its simplified Diablo, Populous, Civ, Sim City, Sim Earth, all rolled into one. That's the thing though, even though each level is rather simple, the game as a whole is very complex.

Looks cool.

A question though: is there any actual aspects of Darwinistic evolution present in the game, i.e. natural selection and random mutation? Do creatures that inhabit your planets evolve or are they static? If so, that would be a huge missed opportunity, since I kinda hoped it would be a bit like Gene Pool.

I'd create a race of creatures who would fight tooth and nail to disprove your evilution and hold up evidence of the true creator:

As cool as the whole prospect of Spore seems, I'm still not entirely sold on the idea that the game will be fun to play. I still may shell out those $10 just to fool around with the creature developer though; I imagine that will offer hours of entertainment.

I do like the way the gameplay in Spore evolves along the lines that gameplay evolved in real life, but don't like the new look and feel they created. I also don't like "create your own content" type of games and I don't like character creation in games. All in all I'll be passing on this one, but assuming they're still using procedural programming I hope it succeeds because that will be important to gaming as time goes on.

Oh yeah... and this is the biggest reason I'll be passing.

I really can't imagine the big deal of the style. It looks ridiculous and cute, which is really the only consistent style I can see working in a game like this. Looks fun anyway.

That creature creation video is AMAZING. The jury's still out on whether the rest of the game will actually be fun, but honestly I'd pay at least $30 to get my hands on that creature creator alone.

I can't get over the IGN commentary

I don't know how he's staying up, he's defying the laws of physics

He did seem like kind of an idiot, but at the same time doesn't that speak for the game's ease of learning?

The game look interesting when it was 1st showed off. Now it looks retarded.

You guys all seem to be ignoring the fact that there is more than just the creature creator. You can have interstellar wars with huge armies completely composed of your own creations. Spore is going to be the best game ever, and it's hard to deny.

This game still looks absolute genius. I can't believe it's been so long since I first heard about it.

My, time flies.

When did any of that info appear? I can't remember seeing any media where there as huge armies of anything.

My biggest worries about this game, as with many, is that it won't really have much depth and re-playability beyond the first time you play it. Especially bad considering a game of this type doesn't really have a story, at least I don't think so. And so this is a game that REALLY needs to have you be able to go to the end of the game, beat it if you so choose, and start over again and have a completely different experience again.

As of now I just feel every little thing is just a gimmicky mini-game, all used to demonstrate the procedural animations of the character design.

I think he's exaggerating the situation slightly. There won't be huge armies, but you should be able to play it roughly like an RTS.

Erm, then don't get the game, honestly, the game is INTENDED to be EASY TO GET INTO, a coffe-break style game, a mix of other games in an easy to learn and enjoy format, this is the ultimate sandbox game, how much you enjoy it is very much up tot he user, there's alot of room for experimentation and creativity, such as the fact you can create EVERYTHING in the game, your own buildings, your own tanks, your own UFOs, your own creatures, heck even your own trees.

Considering almost everything in the game is based around user generated content, I doubt any one game will be the same..

Why would I not get the game? I have been ANTICIPATING this game since it was first announced. Sheesh.

I feel that my concerns are valid ones. I want a game that has all that sandbox action yet still have some pretty in-depth gameplay, rather than just a simple showcase for the design features.

That doesn't make any sense. The game is infinitely repayable precisely because it has no "goal" or "end" or "story". You make the story up yourself. You set the goals yourself. What could be more repayable? You could play the game a billion times and it would never be the same experience. Similar, yes, but never the same.

This will have immense replayability for me, I'd play through "seriously" a couple times with a creatures I wanted to make, then I'll take a break and create the funniest messed up creatures I can and screw around in the creature/tribal/etc. phase, then go back to playing with my real creatures.

When in June will we get the creature editor

I'm still not sure my imagination is up to the task of playing this game.

You can say the same about Solitaire.

Raziaar and I worry that every game will be too similar to be be continually interesting, that every game will be doing the same things just with cosmetic differences.

Definitely a valid worry, but from just the little bit we've seen (amazing how much media they can release and show so very, very little) you can at least change between herbivore/carnivore/omnivore and using religion/industry/war. Me, I hope I don't have to start over and can just keep playing my one game for a long time without it getting boring.

OMG Letters, been ages since I saw you post here in Games and Gaming!

Anyway, as I've been saying, it are fairly valid worries, but I think if all you're looking for is a game that's easy to jump into and play for 30 minutes, then play again another 30 minutes a few hours later, Spore is definitely what you want.:)

I think the time that people get bored of it will vary. There will people who get bored of it after possibly the first play through, but others who will never tire of it.

Much like the Sims.

Oh, and I was playing Gene Pool yesterday. It's damn good fun and quite insightful at the same time.
