John Borland, Staff Writer at CNET's News.com, has written an article about the effects Steam will have on the gaming industry and people's desire to purchase games from the traditional retail stores. It also covers a little bit about the current legal battle between Valve Software and Vivendi Universal Games:
But [Steam] has also gotten Valve into hot water with Sierra Entertainment, the Vivendi Universal subsidiary that is publishing the "Half-Life 2" game, but doesn't get the same cut of copies distributed online. Even as they jointly promote the new game, the companies are locked in a court battle over the broadband network that could help shape the increasingly profitable gaming world for years to come.
The article makes an interesting read and there's even a few comments from someone you might recognise![br]

Congrats, Chris. :)

Valve says it's not doing anything wrong, and is operating under the terms of the contract. There are revenue protections for Sierra in place, where the publisher gets extra funds if Internet distribution winds up undermining retail sales.
Now I didn't know that. Very interesting!

why is com.com cnet and then news.com.com news.com or news.cnet.com

I couldn't have said it better myself, Chris_D :)

Good read.

VU just needs to SHOVE IT!!! steam sucks but its the future of gameing -.-.. ~kicks steam and VU~

good artical...

I hope Sierra doesn't get the rights to Half-Life 2. That could potentially spell the end of the Half-Life franchise.

the f*ck would that happen

Read this few hours ago. Very nice read.

Sure, Steam sucked when it first came out, but think about what it was. Like the article and Chris said, it is completely revolutionary software. There is no manual for coding a Steam type application, there were going to be bugs.

Since the preload began I have had absolutely no problems with it at all. Kudos to Valve for thinking outside the box yet again. I only hope Half-Life 2 is as revolutionary as Half-Life and Steam were.

I feel bad vor VU, really, the guys are going down, and in a way, Valve cheated on them, they should have released the distribution plans before hand.
