Team Fortress 2 developer Robin Walker has revealed to the Escapist that they are working on "a very different new game mode".

The Scout is the next class slated for the special treatment, and Walker expects the update will be available early this year. Additionally, the team is juggling a number of side projects at the moment, including finally bringing a year's worth of the downloadable content and upgrades to the Xbox 360 version of the game. A new Payload map is in the works, more community maps are on the way and the team will soon unveil a very different new game mode.

Walker also revealed that his team are focusing on existing classes but that doesn't mean they're not considering a 10th class. Walker said:

We've got several new class designs floating around, some of which we like a lot, but right now we're focusing on the broadening of our existing classes through the addition of the unlockables.

You can read the rest of three page interview here.

Valve, I heart you so much. [wherethehellisEPISODE3?]

I just hope the new mode doesn't suck as much as arena.

I'm a fan of Payload so a new Payload map is good news and I'm a fan of new game modes so a "very different new game mode" in the works is very welcome news too.

Additionally, Walker feels the Engineer's sentry guns have become "too binary." They're highly lethal to some players and wholly ineffective against others. Sentry guns are also easily dispatched by skilled players, leaving Engineers with little recourse.
This is true. It'll be real interesting to see what the game is like in a year's time with all the class updates done.

Finally, a new update.
I hope they include achievements aswell.

but of course, that's how you'd get the scout unlockables.

I really have a hard time imagining what a 10th class would be...it seems to me they've already covered every aspect of the fighting.

I love Valve to but god knows, they take so long to get anything done that most of the time they might as well not exist.

But I guess its what one pays for quality, and games are more special when you don't get a new flashy PoS every other week.

I read this this morning before I left, and I'm been thinking all day about what the new gamemode might be or might include :D

I want this update, bad.

The mentioning of a 10th class was independant from the new gamemode.

Yes, I'm capable of interpreting straight-forward sentences in English. I was making an logical observation. Civilian is the only class missing from TF2 when compared to TFC and obviously Valve was considering doing something with the civilian if anyone can remember the early join_class civilian and a new different mission type of escort would fit and would be interesting IMO.

I have to admit I dont understand the obsession people have with the Civlian and the return of Hunted, when i play in servers, I find that most players dont have a clue whats going on, its hard enough to drill the concept of standing next to a payload to make it move, or that acctully standing on a point stops them capping it, to have a single random member of the team suddenly be in control of the teams fate is just asking for trouble, while it would be fun in an organised game with good players, that just isnt the case in general play.

We've lost points when we've had, for example, two ubered medics standing on it, with no enemy fire, but enemies in view returning from the spawn point. Standing on the point while ubered (like cloaked or invisible as the spy) doesn't count. By the time the enemies got there, the ubers had worn off, an opponent stood on the point, stalling the capture, and they managed to repel what would otherwise have been a win. All they had to do was turn off the uber once they weren't under fire any longer and began the 4-person capture.

Well, apparantly Valve doesn't, as they have several ideas floating around.

Or so the article says.

Well I've been playing with 9 classes for nearly 10 years, so the idea of a 10th class just blows my mind. Is it even a TF game if there aren't 9 classes? HARDLY!

The 10th class is formed when the other 9 classes combine together to form a giant TeamMech. It's really powerful but the size is it's main weakness.

Hey, I'm disagreeing with or misunderstanding you! This is a personal attack and you should react as such!

Valve replaced the civilian with the cart in Payload and has said so several times. TFC is very fun, and we wouldn't have TF2 without it, but they hardly resemble each other than the basic class ideas. Not to menton that the civilian is not fun to play, and is essentially the same as a flag with legs.

I certainly hope Valve wouldn't hype "A NEW CLASS!" that turns out to be some mundane tool of one game mode. Valve seems to be toying with some new ideas and I certainly hope we see something different.

Mmmmmmmm sarcasm, that's a new interesting approach when posting...

I'm thinking of a complete overhaul from TFC hunted and honestly I have no idea how it would work but neither can I figure how another class would fit into TF2, they have every base covered.

I think you'll find Hunted is NOT returning. Robin states it in that interview. Payload IS TF2's Hunted.

Riot Class. Has a Riot Shield that he can use with right click to hide behind as well as a stun batton and I dunno, a big ass hand gun. It all sounds very intresting, look forward to the update.

I can't think of a good name for this class but basicly he's a class who's main ability is to use little remote-controlled toys of death. Low health and moderate speed he needs to stay out of fights.

Primary weapon: Uzi (inaccurate automatic weapon)
Secondary weapon: Pistol
Melee weapon: Crowbar (just because I can't come up with a better idea)
Other: Remote control

The remote allows access to severeal remote-control vehicles. When he is controlling a vehicle this class is extremely vunerable as he cannot see what is around him and would probably benefit greatly from hanging around an engineer nest. The vehicles can also only go a limited distance from their controller (this could be varied within maps for balance) so that he can't just camp in his own base or spawn room. Vehicles cannot enter the spawn room.

Helicopter: A small helicopter with a submachine gun attached. The weakest of the vehicles.
Spider-bot: A small robot with a shotgun-type weapon. Can crawl along walls and ceilings as easily as floors. Strongest armour of the vehicles.
Car: A little fast car with a small canon attached. It is the fastest of the vehicles.

All vehicles can steal intelligence, push carts and capture points (at half-speed). I suppose a system similar to the engi's metal would be required. He's Asian.

Hunter
The hunter is a class with health and speed similar to the sniper. Unlike the sniper he focuses on short range and must rely on ambush and traps. To help him in this if he crouches and stays still he will turn invisible after 5 seconds. As long as he doesn't move he will stay invisible though his invisiblity will flicker slightly from time to time.

Primary weapon: Elephant gun. Single shot and accuratish. Extremely powerful at short range but with a massive damage drop off at range.

Secondary weapon: Tripwire. A literal tripwire with a bomb at one end. The Hunter places the end with the bomb first and then the other can be placed a moderate distance from the bomb. Can be placed on walls and ceilings as well as floor. When the wire is tripped the bomb goes off. The tripwire can also be triggered by being shot. Or maybe caltrops instead.

Melee: Hunting knife. The hunting knife has a slow rate of fire but is powerful. If the hunter can stab someone less then a few seconds after he was previously invisible he gets a guarenteed critical.

He's an African [strike]poacher[/strike] game hunter.

Some amendments from the original posts.
