I have got about £280 to spend on upgrading my pc... what do you recommend that i get?

My specs now are:
512mb ram
128mb radeon 9800 pro
athlon 64 3000+
creative audigy ls

okay.

but do ou think my graphics card, processor etc. will be good enough to play new games if i upgrade to 1gb ram?

Another 512 stick of RAM. Next in line for an upgrade would be the processor i think.

what speed processor would i need to upgrade to?

I'd actually update ram first, then gfx card and then the processor.

A gig of ram would be a better upgrade compared with upgrading the cpu. Also if you wanted, you could use the onboard sound card until you can save up for the audigy, that way you could spend the money you would have spent on the sound card on the other 512mb stick of ram.

The processor isn't that bad, it'll play any game that is out now.
More RAM would be a great help, especially with games that are comming out soon.

New graphics card and stick of RAM; you could get a 7800GT and some crucial for that amount of money, and you'd be sorted for next-gen stuff like F.E.A.R

Your CPU is fine. Shouldn't have to change that for a long time.
GFX card can play any game out there although the newer stuff only at basic resolution for FPS. Might be good to upgrade that to a 6800GT or X1600XT when it comes out. Depends on pricing.
Ram is OK although 1GB would be perfered. A lot more games these days really play best with at least 1GB. Do you just have 1 stick of 512MB or 2 sticks of 256MB right now? If you just have 1 512MB then just buy another 512MB and put the rest towards the GFX card.

Just a silly question:

Does the Athlon 64 3000+ still compare(and slightly better) than the Pentium 4 3.0GHz?
I thought it being a 64bit CPU, still running in 32bit OS, it had a major performance boost, that much greater than its competing 3.0GHz Pentium.

I'm just wondering, thanks.

64bit on a proccesor will not do anyting unless your os allows it and thats y the proccesor is 3000+ = to a p4 3.0ghz or better
