I'm looking at a new video card, I was thinking an FX5800 (since the 5900 came out, they went down in price.) but the whole noise thing kinda bugs me.
However, I am willing to compromise...I might cave and get an ATI card...that is if I need one.

Okay, why I think I need a new one: I currently own a GF3 TI200 w/ 128mb of memory, but for some reason I still get some video lag in games like MOHAA, Morrowind, and even Max Payne...even though I should be able crank everything to the highest level.
If someone could tell me what is wrong, and save me a bundle of money, that would be great....if no one can tell me what is going on, could they give me advice on which card to go for.

Thanks

Well the card just doesn't make your games run faster its other characteristics of your computer also. Whats your processor speed and how much RAM do you have also?

Open up your PC case and spray water on to it with a spray bottle and it should make some writing appear. Within that writing it should tell you the MHz of the GPU.

I take no responsibility for any damage that may occur.

if you're trying to go cheap, the best mainstream card out right now is a 9500 Pro, definitely better over the 5600 Ultra

and i most DEFINITELY would NOT get a 5800 anything, if you're gonna get anything Nvidia, go for the 5900, if you go for an ATI (i own a 9800 Pro), well, anything's good with them, just don't get a 9600 non pro

I just remembered about the over-clocking software my card came with (its an MSI) is says here:
501MHz Memory clock
and
247Mhz Core Clock.

doesn't the 9600 non pro out preform the 9500 non pro? i can't remember. Damn shitty ass memory, I can't remember what crazy post i made 40 seconds ago.

Oh god, please do NOT get the 5800, avoid it like the plague. You are seriously a sick insane fool for real if you get it.

hmmm an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB card for $250 or a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB card for $550.

i have a strong feeling that the 9900 Pro is not gonna be some souped up ass kicking card everybody thinks it's gonna be

Just watch, the 9900 will be a flop, and Nvidias new card will take the lead and ATi will be the dumps again. Just watch.

Then you can get 5 more fps!

I dont think there will be that much of a difference between all the cards, I dont measure my computer speed in nanoseconds.

5 fps can be important. If you are around 30, that can mean a nearly 20% speed boost... And that's quite alot.

Btw, there already is a difference. The 8 (not sure about it exactly) months old 9700 Pro shouldnt be able to outpace the month old 5900 Ultra by 200-300% in the simplest DX9 demo, yet it does...

the 9900 Pro is going to be a beefed up 9800 Pro to push past the 5900 Ultra's performance, but by the time that comes out, Nvidia will have its NV40 on the shelf and Nvidia will return to the throne.

NV40 isnt gonna come along in a long while... Unless they pull it out a hat :)
Nvidia have several unconfirmed versions though (NV36, NV38) along the line, so new cards will come... Just as ATI have several new, not just the 9900.
