I just downloaded/installed Vista Pre-RC1 Build 5536. Not even 1-2 days later does build 5552 come out (which I'm downloading now, I love Newsgroups). Beta 2 sucked. Build 5547 improved a lot of features and fixed many bugs and ran faster. Build 5536 is running stable for me (had a problem watching videos but i fixed it. Damn Nvidia SWBus drivers) and now build 5552 is out :bounce: . I'm going to install it tonight and post here again with a screenshot. Will anyone here be participating in the Vista RC1 Public Preview thing? I know I will be.

I think it has the timebomb till June 2007. I'm going to use it as my main OS since I think it's finally stable enough. I don't play that many games but CS:S and Guild Wars works so that's good enough for me :). I'm burning the 5552 Build right now onto DVD and am going to install it. If you wanna test it I'd say put it on another partition. It can install over XP SP2 but I wouldn't recommend it.

I re-signed up for the beta preview program a few days ago. I hope they give me access to RC1, since I was already signed up for Beta 2 (never worked on my computer).

Good news to you...you will be signed up. I think you get notified by email and then you just download RC1. Sorry I took so long, I had to reinstall since it didn't recognize my RAID. Well...it did and it didn't. It's hard to explain. I'll post a pic of it a lil later, it's late and I'm going to bed.

Download the pre-RC1 iso from MS and use your Beta2 key. :)

5552 was 'leaked' so you might want to be a tiny bit wary, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

I think they released 5536 to 'anyone' so they could get some quick widespread testing for the RC1 build, I'm sure they want that to be one hell of a build/os.

And yes, been testing Vista for a long, long time (Hello PDC 2003) so definently getting RC1.

Luckily I have my new PC too, woot.

5536 should be done in a few.. hours, if I stop playing videogames online. D:

I don't have my key anymore... just the disk. :hmph: It never worked on my computer, no matter how many times I tried. It sucks too because I only have the 64-bit edition so I can't try it on another machine or VMware.

They closed Beta 2 from the public's eye. How do you guys get the new beta builds without being MSDN subscribers (maybe you are)?

Most people had the cd-key emailed to them so if you didn't delete it should still be there.

"Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 2 Order Confirmation and Product Key"

The email might/should be titled something like that.

Like with Beta2, they'll have CPP (Customer Preview Program) and you'll be able to just sign up again and either download it, or pay a few dollars to have the DVD delivered.

.. and yes, maybe some of us are MSDN or Technet subscribers. ;)

Signing up again and downloading sounds easy enough. Do you know if they fixed that PATA bug? That's why I never got it installed...

A lot of people "dis" m$ left and right. I think when they put their heads together they can actually come up with a decent product. I think if m$ would speed up their return rate (get those patches and new programs out quicker) and lowered the prices a little, they would be really great. I'm looking forward to vista and will gladly fish out $250 for my Ultimate upgrade ;).

And yes... I have tried linux. :p

But how much will Vista cost in the UK?

No idea, ask on one of the Vista fansites or post a comment on the official Vista blog or email them.

Upgrade version + student discount = win. :D

MS creates a hell of a lot of stable apps, in fact, the majority of them are good, it's just a few things from the past (When have they 'really' screwed up lately ? Nothing besides Vista being delayed, but there is some history to that).

It's funny too, people are now starting to realise "Wow.. Microsoft does do good things !" - it's really funny seeing it on sites like /. and Digg.

Why can't they just do 2 home version like they did with WinXP?

I guess Home Premium would be the one for myself? :S
Well the average user can get rid of Enterprise and Business.
Ultimate is basically for the Gamer who has a ton of money.
Premium is what the average gamer should get.
Basic is what the average user needs.

And why is the Ultimate better for gamers?

Ultimate is supposed to have like game tweaking abilities or somethin. Vista is supposed to be the "Ultimate gaming OS". Who knows. I am impressed with the performance of it though. Beta 2 ran like ****. It was slow even on my home desktop. It rated it at a 3.5 which is bogus. This newer build (5536 on my laptop and 5557 on my desktop which I will install on my laptop tonight) runs great. Even with 512MB of memory in my laptop it runs good. AIM 5.9 is compatible with Vista (finally) and my 2 fav games work. CS:S and Guild Wars. So I'm happy :). And yes if you have a Beta 2 key it will work and activate these builds.

I've seen a few forum posts else where that say they just phoned in to activate Vista RC1 without a previous key and it worked.

It's nice to try out Vista but I don't run my important stuff on it atm. Though if I'm just gaming it doesn't matter as much if it crashes or gives me an error. I'd still have a stable OS to go to on a different partition (Windows XP) until Vista comes out.

is there a list of games that are supported for vista?
As long as you have a Dx9 graphic card, just about all games that you can play on XP should work on Vista.
Everything from Diablo and Starcraft to CS:S and NFS:MW works.

windows vista suxxxx it still wont install right on my system. i dont understand it at all. some have said it had problems with the nforce4 or sata idk. someone help?

I had a problem similar back when I had my nForce3 board. It would error in the install. I had to disconnect all the drives except the one I wanted to install it on and it then installed fine. After I installed it I reconnected all my drives, I was set. There are other issues with nForce chipsets though.

What build of Vista are you using? If you're using Beta 2...no wonder. Beta 2 release was horrible.

It recognized my nforce4 chipset, however it would not recognize my RAID. Showed all 4 drives. I installed the drivers via the setup wizard and it still showed 4 drives, but when Vista installed and came up it showed my RAID-0 config as it would in XP. I have 4 Raptors configured as so...

1 JBOD (for OS install)
3 RAID0 (for games and other software)

Shows drive C: (JBOD) and D: (RAID0) in Vista so it works :).

Try to get Build 5552. (Torrents are your friend). I got mine from newsgroups but i saw it on torrents with a lot of seeds so downloads should be quick.

i cant find it anywhere could you pm the link to the torrent.

5536 is just plain awesome.

I've been using it for ~4 hours and I'm yet to have any program crash or not work.

Seriously, if there has ever been just one upgrade in the Windows life that was 'the' update, Vista will be it - it improves upon all previous versions in every way and just adds so much.

When Vista is released expect a big "I told you so" thread from myself. ;)

I almost went from XP to Ubuntu but now I'll be sticking with Vista for my main PC, it's just a hundred times better.. of course, I'll be sticking with Free/Open-BSD for server/firewall type things.

I get 4.5 on the system rating thing, woot.

I have found a few small bugs which I've reported, some are just silly like the Recycle Bin icon not changing when it's empty.

Also, no hardware issues at all, and that's including video card (I'll post about performance of some games, like some Source ones soon), sound card, network, webcam, printer blah blah. I still have to test the MS software for their mice/keyboards on Vista as the extra buttons on my MS MultiMedia one don't work.

I'm dreading rebooting and going into XP, it's going to be so mediocre. :(

- Off to try DoD:S and CS:S.. and 1.6, hopefully OpenGL doesn't suck.

Edit: Performance in Source games is some ~ 75 to 85% of what I get in XP and if I have AA on the game glitches. Nvidia, release drivers please. :(

Forgot to mention how much the new Media Centre rocks, especially so if you have a 360. :D

Well, the upgrade version would be the way to go?

I'll be getting the upgrade version. I have a method for it. Simply I have old restore discs. I install an Xp Emachines Restore Disc and because there is a major hardware difference it wont start up. However the upgrade discs still detect it as a valid copy of Xp and they will install.

Yeah ATI and Nvidia really need to get some better drivers out.

I bought the Upgrade version of XP with student discount, it cost me about $120 like 3 years ago.

I'll most likely be doing the same for Vista Ultimate.

I've had one random full system lock up and the only thing that has crashed is the display driver thingamajig due to bad drivers [or lack of] from Nvidia.

OpenGL doesn't work as far as I know. You have to run CS 1.6 in D3D mode. I haven't tested 1.6 yet.

It should be able to. It's just Vista doesn't entirely support it on its Desktop, but I believe ATI and Nvidia can make there own Open GL systems for it.

does it take more advantage of the benifits from dual core procs?

Vista is more optimized for dual(or more) core cpu's than Xp.

Yarr but Windows doesn't really need dual-core. It just need to be compatible. It's the programs that matter ;)

and a lot of PCs will be moving to 64-bit OSs soon.
Not me, I'm staying 32bit, even if I upgrade to Vista, for the sake of my old school games....You mean I won't play my MOHAA, HL, Will Rock, FarCry, COD, Quake, GTA, Gore, Command Renegade, SOF2 and much more I cant mention here? I don't think so.

What's to say that you can't run 32 bit games?

What's to say that you can't run 32 bit games?

Not on 64bit OS, unless the 64bit version of Vista has the "compatibility Mode" like the 32bit XP has for Win95, 98, Me and 2000, so you can run older 16bit softwares in 32bit XP. Or software has upgrade patch for Vista 64bit (Which will never happen). And still that is not 100% safe-haven; There are always some sort of conflicts when two different type of incompatible softwares are introduced in the same machine.

Well, almost all games run on 32-bit at the moment...

I know. That's why I'm getting the 32bit Vista if I have to upgrade.
It's an option we have: You can either get 64bit Vista or the 32bit Vista, I believe.
