New Vista Builds and RC1

A tip for those who want to get Vista but dont wanna pay the price for it (no its not piracy :p). If you study on a University, ask them about "Microsoft Academic Alliance". You will be able to download most of the products MS got, OS, compilers, Office etc for free (or order DVDs for the cost of shipping). Perfect if you wanna get Vista but can't afford it :)

Well. It always has been a standing issue, an annoying, bolding issue to run 32bit apps in 64bit OS. That's why XP x64 took a dive like 754 without wings. Why? Because of incompatibility issue with 32bit Apps, Frequent BSOD, Unable to install Apps with 16bit Apps installer, Corrupted-Graphic/system reboot for the result of incompatible hardware driver. The list goes on.
Here, at Halflife2.net forum, if you search, you will find people complaining about not able run or keep HL2 running in their native x64 XP, despite Valve releasing HL2 (I believe) update for x64 XP OS.
Also MS released Vista in both x86 and x64 version for the same fact stated above. Crytech released an update patch for FarCry (Yes Oneword) Or was it a whole 64bit Farcry (The Game) for their 64bit customers. Why? Same reason stated above.
If you're running a simple 32bit apps in 64bit OS (That I don't know, Don't care) I'm talking about mainly 32bit game-apps.

You don't believe me?

Windows Vista RC1 is out on Connect :bounce: . I just downloaded it from the Newsgroups and am extracting the ISO to burn as I'm typing this. Hooray for RC1, I've read great reviews for this AND that games run as fast as they do on XP.

Random RC1 Info: The x86 DVD is 2.52GB and the x64 DVD is 3.59GB. I'm downloading now, even though I don't have a serial yet. I still remember what happened last time when they put beta 2 up for public download. Scary.

I know there is an issue with some programs in XP Pro x64, but I must say I am very happy with my 64-bit OS and its far better then regular XP (because its based on Server 2003). The big problem with the buggy programs is that it sees it as 64-bit then automatically assumes it's Server 2003. I guess a lot of people don't know/care that there is a new version of XP Pro out. Oh and I have never had any of those problems you described above. Not to argue with you and I'm sorry if your friend is having problems, but I think people were just turned off by the Beta XP Pro x64. That was ungodly horrible.

I just upgraded my laptop from 512MB RAM to 1GB RAM and it made a big difference. Vista still ran pretty quick with 512, but 1GB. whoo.

Oh yeah, RC1 has been out for a few days and should be public 'soon.'

Okay, you can officially download it but only those in CPP, TechNet and MSDN will have keys.

I just tried installing it on VMware and it worked. All I can say is wow...everything is beautiful, even the install part. Not that I support software pirating but I must admit I acquired a key to see if it works on VMware (remember I lost my Beta 2 key). I'll have to wait till it goes public to get a new key to use it as my main OS.

It's downloadable yes, but you have to use the key you had for Beta 2. I lost that. So I have to wait till they open up the CPP thing again.

Edit: Microsoft just send me an email with information about the CPP release and included my key. :)

Okay I just installed it. Oh my god. I feel like a kid that just got a new toy. It's ****ing beautiful. :) Erm.. I mean I'm impressed. I'll let you know if I find any bugs.

I'm annoyed, I have enough bandwidth for one iso and I really want to try the 64bit version but I don't want to dl just that and find it doesn't work and be stuck with it till the 20th. :(

Bugs I've found so far:
  1. Graphical error after windows loading screen. Only displays for a second (Same effect with default driver and ATI's latest Vista RC1 Catalyst Driver).
  2. Creative Sound Blaster Audigy ZS's driver does not work. Vista needs all digisigned drivers for the x64 version (this is why HD-DVD will only work on x64 edition)
  3. Avast! Antivirus is labeled as not compatible. Simply check do not display again and the program will run normally.
  4. Formatting a drive makes system unstable and you can't do anything else until it is finished.
  5. Updated: Most if not all 32 bit program shortcut targets are not set up correctly. This will make icons not display correctly and sometime are missing from the taskbar when running. This is a x64 bug only. Make sure the folder the shortcut is targeting to is in Program Files (x86) not Program Files. I have sent a detailed report to M$.

Remember to report them (Should be an icon on the desktop or something) so they get fixed. :)

I haven't had any bugs or blue screens (crosses fingers). I'm very impressed with Vista. I'm a tech guy so I don't have many complaints since I can figure out things on my own. But I gotta admit that a noob may have a lil bit of trouble.

I still have the Beta 2 and have already downloaded the RC1 (Both 64-bit) but somehow I can't find the email Microsoft had sent me with the Beta 2 cd key when I got it. If I go into Vista Beta 2 is there anywhere that it shows me my cd key? Actually wait I can just look in system information can't I.

Oh boy... I just found out Steam doesn't work properly. I'm thinking the steam:// browser commands are being blocked. I have my games but I can't add any demos or videos. Anyone else know about this problem?

I received an email from MS because I was in the last CPP in June and they had my cd-key in that email to remind me of it, as in, in case I lost it.

So, you should have this email soon..

I've been told by 1 or 2 people that they installed without a cd-key, but I don't know what exactly happened but I'm burning the iso now so I'll know soon.

Mine prompted for a CD key but again I just used my Beta 2 key. Enjoy RC1 everyone :)

You can just leave it blank and hit enter but you will have to activate within 15 days.

RC1 freaking rocks, the only thing that has crahed are the display drivers when I try to play games but I blame nvidia, their drivers freaking suck and I expected better by now.

Vista will bring a lot of people back to Windows and will stop a lot from switching. :) It will also set FOSS back another few years.

I have a weird problem now. Everything in Vista was working fine, and the internet was working fine too. But now suddenly after restarting it's telling me that I have limited or no connectivity to the internet, and the internet isn't working. I've tried resetting the router, repairing the connection, and all the stuff Vista suggested and nothing worked. Anybody have an idea? I'm using a Linksys router.

Not sure about that one. Vista uses IPv6 now as default and uses IPv4 only for backup. If your router supports it IPv6, it could do things you don't expect it to. I'm having graphical errors myself. Some scrambled text in windows games and if I changed the settings in the Catalyst Control Center to what I usually have, I get 3D checkerboard errors. Also whenever UAC kicks in, everything behind the "shadow" gets corrupted. To top that off, Creative Audio 2 ZS's drivers are for another build and do not work with RC2 at all. I tried and it failed :(.

#boso, that's strange. The only thing i can think of besides what you have done is to uninstall the drivers, reboot and let vista do the auto-driver-install-thing and hope it works.

I found 2 graphical bugs both which where in 5536 too. :/ One, occasionally this 1px line will appear which stretches across my whole screen and the other is that whenever I maximise an app the top part goes kind of black instead of the normal Glass look. I don't think I reported them but I'll do so soon.

I wish games worked as than I could stop using XP. :/

Well I figured out my 3D problem. Do not set Catalyst A.I. on high :p. Now if I can just get rid of that UAC image corruption and get that sound driver installed correctly. Hopefully Creative will come out with a new version soon. I haven't tried any "real" games (sorry if you think solitaire is one) but according to the ATI driver download page, OpenGL isn't supported at this time.

Maximized windows turn black. If you want the glass effect just unmaximize and stretch the window.

Well, that's ugly. D:

Anyone else have ReadyBoost working ? I can't (With this USB drive anywho)..

"The device is plugged into an unsupported interface."

It's in a USB port. Guess I was just unlucky, I'll get another USB off someone.

It's not ugly. I haven't tried the ReadyBoost thing. I did however find more information about the Creative audio problem. :) When you first install Vista and keep the default settings, it downloads updates and installs them. One of these updates was an update for the Creative audio driver (which interestingly enough wasn't installed yet) and it fails every time. I just so happen to be starting over, never change permissions on XP's folders while in vista, and this time around I'm going to start off with Automatic Updates turned off and be careful what I install. I'm going to ignore that update and see if installing a regular driver from Creative itself does the trick. Hopefully they'll post a newer version soon.

That's informative. However, you need all digitally signed drivers for Vista x64. It will not let you install unsigned drivers like it did in XP. Creative needs to speed things up. I'm sure it's a hassle to debug programs, but these companies need to know they need 64 bit drivers to reach everyone. I know it's still just catching on, but the technology is out there so why not use it?
